Work Text:
Midoryia isn’t one hundred percent sure how he got in this situation, standing on the dorm's roof with the boy he once considered a friend and then, later, his main rival. Sure, he had returned to UA because of his apology and he was pretty sure they were the closest people to each other, but they had never really talked about what happened after that day in the rain. Mainly, Midoryia can admit, this was due to his own anxiety.
“There's another war coming, you know?” Bakugo whispers, it’s the most scared Midoriya has ever seen Bakugo allow himself to be.
Midoryia hums, moving to sit next to his friend with their backs pressed against the metal vent, “pretty scary, huh?”
“Terrifying.” if they hadn’t been shoulder-to-shoulder Midoryia isn’t sure he would’ve heard the confession at all. “It’s got me thinking though, not everyone can make it out alive and that scares the shit out of me.”
The thing is, Midoryia himself has gone down this exact line of thinking and knows there’s nothing he could say to ease the blonde's mind. It’s the truth that, whether it be classmates or pro heroes, people are going to die during this war and it’s fucking terrifying, he would like nothing more than to run in the opposite direction and never have to fight, but he can’t.
“If I’m gonna die then I don’t want to die a liar.” Bakugo says after a minute of silence. Honestly, Midoryia has no clue what the hell his friend is talking about but he’s quite content to just sit and listen to whatever he needs to get off his chest. “I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you.”
“You are?”
“Well there's no one else I'd stand in the rain and lay my goddamn heart on my sleeve for I know that for sure,” the blonde mumbles, “I don't know how you forgave me after all the shitty things I did to you.”
Well, yeah, actually a lot of people have said that exact thing after they found out the extent of Bakugos bullying in middle school, but it’s not like Midoryia doesn’t know he did shitty things or that he used to be a pretty bad person. He chooses, of his own volition, to move past these things because they were both young and immature and Midoryia is pretty sure the guy has been secretly making it up to him for years now.
Midoryia giggles, “how could I not? All I ever wanted was for us to be friends again and besides it’s not like you haven’t proved you’d never tell anyone to kill themselves ever again. I won’t lie and say it never affected me but I'm quite content to forgive and forget everything that happened before the age of fifteen.”
Silence falls after that and Midoryia knows Bakugo is waiting for him to address his love confession but Midoryia wants to let it hang in the air a little bit longer. If he’s being completely honest, there’s no doubt in his mind that whatever he feels for Bakugo is more than platonic. In fact, he would probably go so far as to say that, he too, has managed to accidentally fall in love with his best friend.
“I know you’re doing this on purpose,” Bakugo grumbles but he doesn’t rush the other boy to answer anything anyway.
“Let me revel in this a little longer.”
Vaguely, Midoryia can feel himself reach out and intertwine their hands together. It’s not really a conscious action, more a need to prove that this is real, he is here and alive and breathing and even though the future may seem scary at least he has Bakugo by his side.
“I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you too.”
Neither of them say anything but Midoryia knows they're both thinking, “is it stupid to do this when either one of us could die in this war?”. The answer is, probably, but Midoryia doesn’t want to die with any regrets.
Bakugo leans his head back slightly and groans, “I would never risk something like this for anyone else.”
“I don’t really think I would either,” Midoryia confesses, leaning his head on the blonde’s shoulder. “I don’t want to go into this war knowing I passed up the opportunity to love you even if it doesn’t end up being forever.”
“You think it'll be forever if we both make it out of this alive?”
There's a slight chill in the air and Midoryia brings both their hands into his pocket before responding, “well, I’d like to think so. I can’t really imagine loving anyone else but we’re only young.”
“I never want it to be anyone else.”
Distantly, there's the sound of voices on the stairs and Midoryia can recognise them as a few of their classmates, probably coming to find them for some stupid game or idea they’ve had. Usually, Midoryia would be more than happy to join in with their antics but he’s not quite ready to give up the peace he and Bakugo have created for themselves up here.
“So does this mean we’re boyfriends now?” Midoryia asks, moving so that they can make eye contact.
Bakugo chuckles, “I guess we did skip that part and went straight to professing love.” He leans over to rest their foreheads on one another, “this doesn’t mean I’m gonna become some sappy romantic by the way.”
Midoryia has to laugh at that, Bakugo a romantic? Yeah, as if.
Gently, Bakugo leans forward to capture his boyfriend's lips in a kiss. It’s short and sweet but it means everything to Midoryia and he’s just so eternally grateful to have found himself on this roof with the boy he loves.
When the others burst through the door Midoryia is half expecting Bakugo to pull away from him and pretend nothing happened, instead he moves to face the front and leaves their hands intertwined in the other boy's pocket. It's not completely obvious that they were holding hands because of how close they’re sitting but Midoryia takes this to mean Bakugo isn’t too bothered about hiding their relationship.
“There you guys are,” Mina bursts out not paying any mind to the disapproving look Bakugo shoots at her, “whatever you two love birds have been up to can wait, we need to have a serious talk.”
Bakuugo rolls his eyes, “yeah, and what would this oh so serious talk be about?”
Midoryia notes that the blonde doesn’t blow up at the term ‘love birds’ being used to describe them and, secretly, feels rather giddy at the fact that it doesn’t fill his boyfriend with rage to be seen with him. He doesn’t listen to whatever trivial thing Mina has found them to argue about because he can hear Bakugo disputing her every word and determines his input is not needed, instead he finds Todoroki’s eyes among the crowd and uses his eyes to gesture to their hands. Todoroki can’t see their intertwined hands but he sure as hell knows what's going on by the way Bakugos arm leads right into Midoryias pocket.
“When?” he mouths, a grin forming on his face.
Midoryia has to hold back a delighted giggle as he mouths back, “just now.”
He watches in amusement as his best friend turns to Ochako and whispers excitedly (yet somehow still essentially monotone) the news. Ochako isn’t so subtle, shouting ecstatically, “no way!”
All eyes turn to observe the girl and this time Midoryia can’t fight the giggles and turns to bury his head in his boyfriend's shoulder.
“What’re you shouting about?” Iida questions and it's the first time Midoriya realises he's up there with them.
Ochako doesn’t stop to think before exclaiming, “Bakugo and Midoryia are dating,” she falters for a second before turning to say, “oh my god, was I not supposed to tell anyone?”
“It’s fine, it’s the truth anyway.” Bakugo mumbles, moving so that the group can’t fully see his face.
Midoryia doesn’t pay attention to anything else after that, he just sits on the rooftop and wishes he could exist in this space forever.
