Work Text:
Who was she anymore? What was her name? She had one, she knew. Right? She knew Rachbach called her ‘assassin,’ but that couldn’t be her name. Right? She shook her head. It couldn’t be. He sometimes called her doctor as well, and she knew that at least was her title. Her name certainly wasn’t servant - his favorite thing to call her - no matter what language he said it in.
But what was her name? Why was it so hard to remember?
“Victor, your name is Victor you little shit.”
She shook her head. She knew that voice was wrong; her name wasn’t Victor. At least not anymore.
Why was it that she couldn't remember her name? Why couldn’t she remember who she was?
She pulled at her hair and felt the debtor's bracelet thunk against her skull. She looked at it and couldn't get her buried eyes to focus on the letters on it.
“Damn it all! Why can't I remember my own damn name?”
She swiped at her eyes and her hands came back wet with tears. “Fuck, I don’t need this today.”
She shook her head as she scrubbed at her eyes, willing the tears to go away.
“Darling, my love, don’t beat yourself up. You've been through a lot. It's okay.” The redhead in front of her said.
She knew that person couldn't be there. Not only did seeing the person hurt, she knew that none of Rachbach's people would be kind to her. She's just another debtor to them.
“Who am I?” She asked.
The person who wasn’t there answered with, “You are the love of my life. Isn’t that enough?”
She shook her head. “I want to know what my name is. I know we loved each other, Bud, but what's my name?”
She was surprised when she said the person who was not their name. If only because why could she remember it when she couldn't remember her own? She growled in frustration as the person didn't respond.
Though it made sense in a way, she didn’t know her name. Why would something that she was hallucinating know either? She still didn't like it.
The door to her room opened and one of the other debtors yelled, “Doctor! Rachbach wants you!”
She shook her head and vowed to remember her name, but for now, she would be fine with Doctor. It was what she was if not who she was and that would have to be enough for now.
