Work Text:
“Swipe left,” Jian Yu said.
Yin Yu glanced at him with a raised eyebrow. “Why?”
“Photos of trips and high-end cars? Income of 6 zeroes? Obvious catfish. Goodbye.”
Yin Yu twisted his mouth but did as told. Next one was a middle-aged man with a gentle smile. He was in a suit, looking like your regular office worker.
“Left!” Jian Yu grimaced. “Over forty are always divorced, with kids, and want to try weird kinks. No-no.”
Yin Yu furrowed his eyebrows as he swiped left. Next was a guy around his age. He was muscular and had a cocky smile. Not really Yin Yu’s type, but could still be considered as an option.
“Ugh, no.” Jian Yu didn’t even wait for Yin Yu and swiped left himself. “Jocks. Hate those.”
“Enough,” Yin Yu scoffed. “I thought you wanted me to date someone. This won’t get me anywhere.”
“Yes, date someone decent, not just any loser!” Jian Yu flicked a finger to Yin Yu’s forehead. “We’re doing this seriously. You’re looking for a committed relationship. Most of the guys here want a hookup. So, yes, as the good friend I am, I’m helping you filter the trash.”
Yin Yu pinched the bridge of his nose. He was already regretting doing this.
Jian Yu had been nagging him for years about his nonexistent love life. Yin Yu had had good excuses before: He wanted to focus on his studies, he preferred to enjoy his college life single, he had no time with his part-time job, he was busy job-hunting, or you know, he might not like girls at all and didn’t know what to do about it!
When the awkward conversation about his orientation came up, Jian Yu had nodded and patted his shoulder. “You should try online dating” was the only thing his friend had to say about the matter. Yin Yu didn’t know if he should have felt grateful or not.
Yin Yu wasn’t eager about using a dating app. He wasn’t that desperate to meet someone. Sure, finding other gay guys in the area was not an easy feat. After struggling with his identity for so long, going to mixers or bars felt quite intense to someone as reserved as Yin Yu. So, after Jian Yu’s insistence, Yin Yu finally caved in.
He had downloaded TanTan and opened an account. His profile was the plainest thing ever. Although Jian Yu told him some embellishment wasn’t gonna hurt him, Yin Yu refused to have people get disappointed with his real self once they meet. He simply wouldn’t survive the embarrassment. So, he put up three photos he thought were the most decent of his gallery, wrote a brief description of his hobbies and all done.
Yin Yu ♂ 27 Capricorn
Looking for a serious relationship.
I like historical movies, watching sports, and finding new coffee shops. If you’d like to talk, hit me up.
After that, he began searching for potential partners, but Jian Yu and his way-too-high standards weren’t helping at all. He had had something to say about every man they had seen so far. This one was a fake profile, that one was a scam, this guy was ugly, that guy didn’t ‘vibe’ with him. So on and so forth.
“Hey, he looks exactly like this Shen laoshi from my… Wait, I think he really is Shen laoshi.”
Yin Yu raised an eyebrow. “Coworker?”
Jian Yu was a teacher in a private middle school. It was a mystery how he had managed to keep his job with that personality. Yin Yu didn’t imagine he would have much patience for teenagers.
“Yeah, who would’ve thought. It’d be super awkward. Next.” Jian Yu swiped left.
Yin Yu brushed his hand away. “Let me at least decide for myself if I like him or not!”
“I don’t want you fucking my coworker!”
“I didn’t mean him in specific.” Yin Yu sighed. “You’re acting like I’m a child.”
“You’ve never been on a real date. Of course you’re in fucking diapers.”
Yin Yu felt his cheeks burn. He knew he had zero knowledge about dating conventions, but he considered himself a smart person. He appreciated his friend’s concern, but it was excessive.
“I can handle it.”
Jian Yu rolled his eyes. “Alright, alright. But if you do something stupid, I’ll veto your TanTan privileges.”
Yin Yu huffed. He would find a man decent enough to make Jian Yu shut up forever about the topic. With that in mind, Yin Yu browsed through the profiles. This one was too old, this other had little interests in common, this one was probably the problematic cousin of someone...
Jian Yu stared at him. Yin Yu ignored him.
Even if he was doing this whole thing with a broad mind, Yin Yu also had set preferences. However, the more he looked, the more he realized that maybe his ideal man was too idealistic. Expecting to match with a handsome, sporty, loyal and romantic guy was going too far. Real guys were, well, human. Yin Yu decided to look at the profiles with kinder eyes. Yet, the next guy to show up was indescribable.
Literally. The photo used was an out of focus, zoomed pic of some guy turning around, so you could really only distinguish his brown hair and frowned eyebrows. Anything else was too blurry to make sense of it.
Jian Yu laughed. “What the fuck?”
Yin Yu read the short profile.
Qi Ying ♂ 21 Libra
My favorite color is green. I like martial arts. I want a nice person.
Jian Yu laughed harder. “Hey, isn’t that just your type? Swipe right!”
“Shut up,” Yin Yu elbowed him.
“But you like martial arts!” Jian Yu tried to take the phone from Yin Yu’s hand. Yin Yu turned away, keeping the phone out of reach. “You have like two green shirts too! A match made in heaven! Hahaha!”
Yin Yu was not going to swipe right on this kind of profile. It was obviously a joke account. But Jian Yu, like any annoying friend, tickled Yin Yu, grabbed the phone and gave it a super like.
“Jian Yu! Are you serious?”
Jian Yu was crying from laughing so much. “I had to.”
“You’re an ass. I’m not doing this anymore.”
“Relax. One more, one less. It’s not like you’ll match anyways. Keep going, you’ve swiped right like 3 guys only.”
They kept on the hunt for another 20 minutes. There were quite a variety of profiles. Yin Yu could see he had gotten some likes, but so far, there were no matches. When Yin Yu tired of it, Jian Yu told him to stop.
“You won’t always have immediate matches, maybe over the days you’ll get notified. Don’t sulk.”
“I know.”
Except that the app beeped announcing one match. Yin Yu held his breath.
He turned his gaze to the phone to see that the match was…
Jian Yu doubled with laughter. “I told you! Match made in heaven!”
The match was that blurry guy.
Yin Yu put his phone down. Online dating was not made for him.
After that, Jian Yu was rightfully kicked out of Yin Yu’s apartment, but not without making Yin Yu promise to tell him of any other matches. Yin Yu agreed. He wasn’t expecting much, to be honest.
Although it was Saturday night, Yin Yu had had enough excitement for the day. He wanted to do nothing else but lay down and watch a movie. That was how Yin Yu’s weekends usually went. He put anything having to do with dates out of his mind and submerged himself in the fantasy world of the film.
The movie had been going for around 20 minutes when Yin Yu’s phone beeped. It was a new message in TanTan.
Qi Ying:
Qi Ying, 21, libra, 15 km away.
You’ve liked each other! Go ahead and talk about wushu, action movies or soup dumplings.
Qi Ying: hi
Blurry Guy™ had messaged him. Yin Yu didn’t want to acknowledge the guy. Whichever reason he had to pester people online was not of his interest. Yin Yu decided to not answer.
His phone beeped again.
Qi Ying:
??
Qi Ying:
hey
Yin Yu ignored it. Surely if he left it alone, the other guy would realize he doesn’t want to talk to him.
Against his expectations, Blurry Guy would not get the message and keep sending texts throughout the weekend. After each ping, a new message with the orange logo crammed his notification bar.
Qi Ying:
hi?
Qi Ying:
👋👋
Qi Ying:
u there??
Qi Ying:
what r u doing?
Qi Ying:
hey
Qi Ying:
let’s talk
Yin Yu went as far as to turn off the push-up notifications. Yet, somehow they kept coming through. Annoyed, Yin Yu activated the don’t disturb mode in his phone. Finally, he could breathe without any beep interrupting his day. The guy would give up, eventually.
On the fourth day, Yin Yu thought Blurry Guy would have given up, and so, he open TanTan for other possible matches. Unfortunately, no new matches were obtained. Shockingly, though, the messages from Blurry Guy were still incoming. Yin Yu was feeling bad for the man at that point. Why would he insist so much when he got no response? Yin Yu figured he needed a clear rejection.
Qi Ying:
u reading my messages??
Qi Ying:
answer
Yin Yu:
Hi
Yin Yu:
Sorry. I think we matched by mistake
Qi Ying:
really?? I’m sure I liked you
Qi Ying:
I like watching sports too 👍
Yin Yu:
Oh, nice
Qi Ying:
so u didn’t like me?
Qi Ying:
u r the only match I got
Well, Yin Yu couldn’t tell him now that the jerk he called friend had liked the profile as a joke. Even if this guy was a stranger, and probably just fooling around, Yin Yu had a thin face. Jian Yu constantly scolded him for that. Why should he foolishly place others over his own comfort? But Yin Yu knew how awful it was to be put on the spot, so he didn’t want to do that to others. Besides, Blurry Guy had been waiting for a reply for days. It would be too mean. He could entertain him, just for a bit.
Yin Yu:
My bad, I got confused
Yin Yu:
I did like you so it was a real match
Qi Ying:
ok
Qi Ying:
u like wrestling?
Yin Yu:
Yes
Qi Ying:
😃
They kept chatting about wrestling competitions, food they liked and sports they practiced. The original apprehension Yin Yu felt dissolved with each message. He began to enjoy the conversation. Before he realized it, it was already 3 a.m.
Yin Yu:
It’s late, we should call it quits
Qi Ying:
tru
Qi Ying:
let’s talk later
Yin Yu:
Sure
Yin Yu:
Good night
Yin Yu closed the app with a guilty conscience. He wasn’t planning on talking to him again. He felt sorry for Blurry Guy, but Yin Yu was looking for potential partners after all. Blurry Guy wasn’t one of them.
When he woke up next day, a message was waiting for him, though.
Qi Ying:
I had congee for breakfast
Qi Ying:
I don’t eat it much but I remember u said u like it
Qi Ying:
It wasn’t good 😑
Yin Yu puffed a laugh. What kind of message was that? He began writing a reply and stopped mid-sentence. What was he doing? He shouldn’t reply. He had already decided so. Even if Blurry Guy had a distasteful breakfast, it had nothing to do with Yin Yu. He wouldn’t reply. No matter that Blurry Guy was amiable, making Yin Yu want to be friendly in response. No made do.
Yin Yu closed the app and put his phone down. He had already made his mind.
A minute passed. Yin Yu scratched the bridge of his nose. With a sigh, he took the phone again and opened Blurry Guy’s chat window.
Although Jian Yu had said it as a joke, it turned out that Yin Yu and Blurry Guy had indeed a lot in common. They both liked MMA wrestling and shooter video games, they preferred salty over sweet snacks, they hated the humid heat of Shanghai, and they both were interested in men.
After the first conversation, Yin Yu hesitated several times on continuing his chats with Blurry Guy. He didn’t know who was the man behind the account, or what his true intentions were. However, their conversations never strayed from trivial things. No asking sensitive information, no mentions of meeting up, no dubious offers to invest in crypto. Yin Yu thought it wouldn’t do him harm to talk with him once in a while. Blurry Guy was straightforward about everything, which made him feel oddly at ease. Yin Yu could vent without fearing judgment, so he could be unusually honest as well.
Qi Ying:
Yin Yu u like wontons?
Qi Ying:
this place has super good ones!!
Yin Yu:
Wait, aren’t you younger than me?
Yin Yu:
What’s with you using my name like that
Yin Yu:
Rude
Qi Ying:
?? what should I call u?
Yin Yu:
Hmm dunno
Yin Yu:
You should call me ge at least
Qi Ying:
ok 🌟
Qi Ying:
ge u rlly have to try this place!!
Like that, a message once three days became once a day, then it became multiple times a day. Their interactions grew along the weeks. Whenever Yin Yu heard his phone beep, he would immediately check their chat.
“Who is it?” Jian Yu asked one evening. He had come again to hang out at Yin Yu’s place.
“What?”
“You keep smiling at your phone. What, found a good guy?”
“No, it’s not that.” Yin Yu schooled his face. “Just a friend.”
“A friend,” Jian Yu raised an eyebrow. “Do you do that face when you chat with me?”
Yin Yu cringed. “Only my nice friends get a smile.”
“Whoa, I’m not one? The fuck you call when I went to take you out of that awful bar and—”
“Nice friends don’t mention things we agreed to never talk about.”
“Okay, okay. So just a nice friend, unlike me. Whatever.” Jian Yu rolled his eyes. “Then, how’s it going with TanTan?”
Yin Yu looked away. “Um… you see…”
Since that first mismatch, Yin Yu hadn’t gotten any other matches. Not a surprise since he refused to upload more photos to the app, didn’t update his profile nor went hunting for partners. He had straight up ignored the whole thing apart from his chat with Blurry Guy.
Jian Yu gave him an unimpressed look. “Of course you won’t find anyone like that! You’re not even fucking trying.”
Yin Yu knew Jian Yu was right, but dating apps seemed a mountain too high for him to climb. If he was honest, he preferred to find a partner through more traditional channels. Maybe meeting in a coffee shop he frequented, or reconnecting with an old acquaintance at work, or stumbling upon one another in a filled train car at rush hour. Just a casual encounter, you know. Was it too idealistic to hope for a relationship to develop that way?
Jian Yu wouldn’t have that. “Your perfect man won’t fall from the sky. If you want to meet someone you have to get out there and let everyone know that your piece of ass is available.”
He made Yin Yu go through profiles again and like the guys that looked decent. A couple of matches happened in the way, but Jian Yu furiously blocked them when it turned out all of them were bots that send links to porn. At the end, Yin Yu still didn’t get genuine matches.
“I think I’ll just give up on it.” Yin Yu sighed, not as disappointed as he had expected.
Jian Yu finally took pity on him and let the matter rest. If Yin Yu really didn’t want to do it, Jian Yu wouldn’t push it.
“It’s those guys’ loss.” Jian Yu tried his best at comforting words. “You’re too good for them, anyways.”
Yin Yu smiled. “Thanks.”
Well, even if it had been a waste, he got a chance to experience the thrill of online dating. Besides...
His phone beeped.
Qi Ying:
I fell asleep in class
Qi Ying:
when I woke up it was over and there was another class ongoing
Qi Ying:
I think no one noticed I wasn’t part of that class
Qi Ying:
isn’t that funny?
Besides, he gained an unusual friend. That counted as a good outcome.
Yin Yu’s life went at his usual rhythm after that. Waking up, going to work, eating a cheap lunch, coming home, question his life choices, sleeping. Restart again the next day. It wasn’t a terrible life, just normal and predictive. That’s why, the occasional interruption of Blurry Guy’s texts made his days more remarkable, more interesting. They hadn’t talk for long—a bit over a month was hardly enough to say you knew a person—but with each message, Yin Yu felt like there was a real connection between them.
Qi Ying:
got invited to a fight, but I have to finish a report today so I can’t go
Qi Ying:
😞😞😞
Yin Yu:
A fight? What?
Qi Ying:
yeah boxing match
Qi Ying:
it’s for the title
Yin Yu:
Ah, that makes more sense
Yin Yu:
It’s a shame you couldn’t go
Yin Yu:
Was it a date or something?
Qi Ying:
not a date
Qi Ying:
some friends got together to go
Yin Yu relaxed. Then, he realized there was no reason for him to feel like that. What did it matter if Blurry Guy had a date or not? There wasn’t anything going on between them. Yin Yu had to clarify that he wasn’t worried about such a thing. He couldn’t have the guy thinking otherwise.
Yin Yu:
That’s good then
Yin Yu:
I mean not good that it wasn’t a date but good that your friends got together to go
Yin Yu:
You couldn’t go in the end but I mean it’s nice to hear you have friends
Yin Yu:
good friends I mean
Yin Yu:
Um sorry, please ignore all that
Qi Ying:
I’m not dating anyone
Yin Yu:
Oh
Yin Yu:
I see
Qi Ying:
There’s no one nice like u anyway
Yin Yu fumbled with his phone, almost dropping it. Then, he cringed at his reaction. It was just a casual remark; it didn’t mean anything else. Just making friendly conversation with an unknown man… It wasn’t as bad as it sounded.
Before his thoughts could get more messy, Yin Yu changed the subject.
Yin Yu:
Want to tell me what’s your report about? Maybe I can help
Qi Ying:
really??
Yin Yu:
Yes, I’m free
Qi Ying:
ok
Qi Ying:
thanks ge ❤️
Qi Ying:
u r truly the nicest person I know
Yin Yu put his phone down. He wouldn’t accept that reading that had made his heart skip a beat. He wasn’t taking the words of Blurry Guy seriously. No way.
He’s a blobfish, he’s a blobfish, Yin Yu repeated in his head. I’m not considering him seriously because he’s just a weird sea creature.
A beep interrupted his musings, letting him know of an incoming notification. At first, he thought it was another message from Blurry Guy, but when he read the bubble, he was stunned. He had gotten a new match. After hesitating for a minute, Yin Yu checked who it was.
The profile that came up was of an athletic guy with a clean image. Short brown hair and a strong jaw. He enjoyed running, movie dates and meeting people. Although it was a boring standard profile, Yin Yu had found him rather pleasant. There was no sign of it being a bot, so he was surprised to see they had matched with each other.
The other person hadn’t contacted him yet. Yin Yu wondered if he should do it, then. He still thought online dating wasn’t the most suitable for him, but Jian Yu was right. He couldn’t keep on running away forever lest he put his hopes in hopeless recipients. He decided to take the first step.
Yin Yu:
Hello
Yin Yu:
Nice to see we matched
The other guy wasn’t online. So Yin Yu left it at that. His stomach churned, quickly feeling quite sick.
A beep came through and his stomach did a whole 180° flip. Yin Yu held his breath and checked his phone.
Qi Ying:
ge u there? my report is about foreign customs
Qi Ying:
u know any?
Qi Ying:
I looked up info but most were in english and I’m not good at it
Yin Yu’s stomach settled. He couldn’t help but laugh at himself. When did talking with Blurry Guy become so comfortable? It seemed that having Blurry Guy as a kind of almost-friend was good for the ever anxious him.
When he eventually received a message back from the athletic guy, he didn’t feel as nervous. He had just been talking in length with Blurry Guy about the newest B horror movie that was in cinemas, which helped him relax.
On the other hand, his chats with Athletic Guy weren’t as unique. They exchanged a few pleasantries and chatted for a couple of days—talked about cafés they liked and what not. Truth be told, Yin Yu didn’t find this man that interesting. He figured Athletic guy thought the same about him. Well, if it didn’t work, it didn’t work. Yin Yu was sure that’s how things ought to be.
However, Athletic Guy kept their conversation going through the days. Yin Yu wasn’t sure if that was good or not. At that pace, the other would surely ask him to meet. He didn’t know if he was ready.
His stomach felt like it was sinking. At times like that, he usually would text Blurry Guy.
Yin Yu:
Hey
Yin Yu:
What are you doing?
Qi Ying:
at class
Yin Yu:
Oh, sorry
Qi Ying:
it’s ok
Qi Ying:
I’m bored
Yin Yu smiled. He had steadily learned this man’s way of being. Blurry Guy would get bored easily.
Yin Yu:
No, you need to pay attention. I won’t distract you
Qi Ying:
it’s almost over anyway
Qi Ying:
I like talking to u ge
Yin Yu rubbed his reddened face. Well, no one would hate it if they’re being complimented. He could give the favor back.
Yin Yu:
I like talking to you as well
Qi Ying:
🌞🌞
Qi Ying:
what are u doing?
Yin Yu:
nothing much
They talked about trivial stuff for a while. Then, Yin Yu excused himself to receive a package. When he came back, a new message from Blurry Guy came through.
Qi Ying: hey what are you wearing?
Yin Yu stared at the message. What? He found it strange, but still replied.
Yin Yu:
Loungewear? I’m at home
Qi Ying:
nice
Qi Ying:
texting me from your bed then?
Yin Yu:
Yes... why?
Qi Ying:
ohh sounds comfy
Qi Ying:
I’m at school all feeling like crap
Qi Ying:
won’t you cheer me up? 🥺
Yin Yu:
That sucks, hang in there
Qi Ying:
cute
Qi Ying:
I’d love to see that cute face of yours tho
Qi Ying:
why don’t you send me a pic
Qi Ying:
I’ll send you one back 😉
Yin Yu:
Um no
Qi Ying:
feeling shy doll?
Qi Ying:
don’t worry this is just between us
Yin Yu:
No
Yin Yu:
I’m not sending you anything
Qi Ying:
ah alright
Qi Ying:
forget that, I was joking
What the fuck was that? Yin Yu stared confused at the phone. He knew TanTan was a dating app at the end of the day, but he thought… that they were getting to know each other. Build a friendship and see from there. No, that was wrong. In the first place, he wasn’t considering Blurry Guy as a potential partner, was he? That’s why he was Blurry Guy. Not Qi Ying. Not a name that Yin Yu had learned so well by now. A name he had tried many times to give a face. A name he was too scared to link to a real face.
Beep beep. Two new messages.
Qi Ying:
ge we should go out sometime
Qi Ying:
I wanna meet u
Yin Yu felt his stomach twist and turn. He realized he had gotten too comfortable with Blurry Guy. He could still be a dude making a fool of him or trying to extort him. Yin Yu backtracked through their messages and realized he had given a bit too much information about himself. This wouldn’t do. Jian Yu would mock him and tell him “Didn’t you say you knew what you were doing? Look at you! You shitted all over your diapers.”
Yin Yu panicked. He had to stop this.
Yin Yu:
Sorry. I’m not interested. Let’s drop it
Qi Ying:
huh
Qi Ying:
u don’t want to meet?
Yin Yu:
It was fun talking to you, but I don’t have any intention of taking this further
Yin Yu:
I was just messing around
Yin Yu:
Sorry. Stop messaging me
Qi Ying:
I don’t understand
Qi Ying:
what do u mean
Qi Ying:
ge??
Yin Yu stopped answering him.
Yin Yu was so embarrassed. Why did he think he was being pursued seriously? Why did he take it all so honestly? The other party didn’t even have a photo in their profile. Jian Yu was right, he was too green and an easy prey. What a fool he had made of himself. Surely no one found him attractive. Wasn’t that why he had gotten 0 matches so far? Well, 2 matches. Blurry Guy and…
He realized he had messages from Athletic Guy.
Athletic Guy:
Sorry if this is sudden, but would you like to meet?
Athletic Guy:
There’s a restaurant I’d like to go to.
Athletic Guy:
What do you say? :)
Yin Yu wanted to know if he was someone desirable. If there was even one person who could look at him and love him. Yin Yu needed to confirm it.
Yin Yu: sure, when?
Yin Yu was hesitating about messaging Jian Yu. He figured he better tell him now and not later. Jian Yu would make a scandal if he didn’t tell him about his upcoming date. With a sigh, Yin Yu opened WeChat.
Yin Yu:
so I’m meeting someone
Jian Yu:
what
Jian Yu:
YOURE MEETING SOMEONE????
Jian Yu:
WHO??????
Yin Yu:
Met him through tantan. We’ve been talking for a while
Jian Yu:

Yin Yu:

Jian Yu:

Yin Yu:
Would it kill you to have some faith in me?
Jian Yu:

Jian Yu:

Yin Yu:
They won’t. It’ll be alright
Yin Yu:
I came to tell you expecting some supportive words but whatever
Jian Yu:

Jian Yu:

Jian Yu:

Jian Yu:
was that what you wanted?
Yin Yu:
no
Jian Yu:
ill be waiting the full report of how shit went down 👍
Yin Yu:
keep on waiting then because there won’t be shit going down and everything will turn perfectly fine
It all went wrong. Yin Yu should have known.
The moment they met, he realized he’d made a mistake. Athletic Guy didn’t look like in his photos at all. He seemed way older than the 30 years old he supposedly had. He was disheveled and was smoking a cigarette. Not the image that Yin Yu was expecting at all. Before he could think of going back, the other guy spotted him and quickly approached him. The guy smiled lazily and introduced himself. Yin Yu couldn’t run away now. They were in a crowded plaza, so he couldn’t do a fuss without ending up uploaded to Douyin. Well, Yin Yu thought he’d just enjoy the meal and leave the situation behind him.
But it got worse. Once they sat down in the restaurant, the guy ordered over 10 items. Yin Yu stared as the little table got full of food. The guy didn’t even try to keep a conversation. He simply ate and gave vague grunting sounds of acquittance. Yin Yu sipped his iced coffee.
That wasn’t the end of it, though. Before the man could finish the last of the things he had ordered, he went to the bathroom. At first Yin Yu was glad to have a moment to calm himself, but when over 10 minutes passed, he thought something was off. After 20 minutes, Yin Yu went to the toilet to check what happened, but there was no one there. He went as far as to check every stall, but the bathroom was clean. The guy was gone. Yin Yu came back and looked at the table full of plates. It dawned on him that the guy had run before the tab was delivered.
Yin Yu couldn’t do anything but sigh and walk to the counter to pay.
When he arrived home, the first thing he did was change into comfortable sweatpants and a worn-out t-shirt. He was eager to spend the rest of the evening wasting away, under his sheets and watching some movies, when his belly growled. Despite paying for the whole lunch, he couldn’t eat a single thing. At moments like this, the best balm for the heart was cheap greasy takeout. So, Yin Yu ordered a meal through Meituan.
Just as he did that, his phone dinged. Yin Yu saw Jian Yu’s name in the notification bar. He wasn’t in the mood to reply, but Jian Yu had this habit of sending message after message to annoy him till he replied. After the incessant ringing of his phone, Yin Yu groaned and opened the chat.
Jian Yu:
so??? how was it
Jian Yu:
hey
Jian Yu:
heeeeey
Jian Yu:

Yin Yu:
No thank you
Jian Yu:
uuugh just send a pic to knie this guy is okay and not a frwakinh weirdo
Jian Yu:
*know
Jian Yu:
*freaking
Yin Yu couldn’t tell Jian Yu the truth. If he did, Jian Yu would go on a manhunt to find the jerk and doxx him; but, even worse, Jian Yu would have the right to tell Yin Yu “I told you so.”
Yin Yu wanted everything but give Jian Yu the chance to laugh about him. He needed a picture with a real guy and quickly. The question now was where to find named guy.
A notification in his phone showed up.
Meituan Waimai · now
Your order will arrive shortly 🛵
Well, Yin Yu knew where to get a real guy now.
He checked his Meituan app. On the driver’s profile, was the picture of a man and the name Quan Yizhen. The guy seemed young and fair looking. Yin Yu couldn’t tell more from the small profile picture, but at this point, he couldn’t be picky. He had to convince this delivery guy to take a picture with him.
After what seemed the longest five minutes of Yin Yu’s life, the doorbell rang. His phone also dinged. His food had arrived.
Steeling his nerves, and repeating in his mind the words he would use, Yin Yu opened the door. As he looked at the delivery guy, his brain filled with white noise. Scratch fair looking, this delivery guy was probably the most handsome man Yin Yu had ever seen.
Well, maybe that was an exaggeration. He had seen plenty of handsome guys—he was acquainted with Hua Cheng after all—but none had teared a reaction so visceral from him as the one standing before his door.
The man was tall, around Yin Yu’s own stature. He was well built, not a broad figure, but it was obvious he trained regularly. His head was full of curly locks that in anyone else might have looked like a disordered bird nest, but in this man it looked like a chic disheveled style.
“Food,” the stupidly handsome man said, bringing the package up to attention. He was looking down at his phone. “Are you Yin—” He furrowed his eyebrows, then he glanced up. His eyes—beautiful big amber eyes—widened. “Yin Yu?”
“Huh?” Yin Yu said stupidly in awe.
“It’s you...”
It took a moment for Yin Yu to process the words. “Oh, yes. I’m Yin Yu. I ordered that.”
He showed his phone with the delivery app opened. Yin Yu’s cheeks were burning. He mentally berated himself for losing his brain cells to a pretty face.
“No,” the delivery guy said. “I mean, it’s you, ge!”
Yin Yu was confused now. “Excuse me?”
“It’s me! Quan Yizhen.”
“Um, yes? I saw your name on the app,” Yin Yu said, still not getting what this handsome man was trying to tell him.
“Ah, right. Didn’t use my real name. I’m Qi Ying.”
Yin Yu blinked. He must have heard wrong, he thought. There was no way that name had been uttered by this beautiful man.
“I’m sorry, who did you say?”
“Qi Ying.”
Yin Yu’s face sank. He didn’t hear wrong.
“Ge?”
“W-what?”
“Are you okay?”
Yin Yu couldn’t tell. He felt like fainting, so maybe he wasn’t okay. But, how else could he react to this information? He couldn’t believe it.
“You… you’re that guy? Qi Ying? From TanTan?”
“Yes,” the delivery—well, Qi Yi—no, Quan Yizhen said. “I’m so happy to see you!”
Yin Yu had tried before to imagine what Qi Ying looked like, they have been talking so much, so of course he would try to put a face to the man. No matter what he imagined, at the end, he only could connect him to the unfocused picture from TanTan. At some point, he didn’t think of Qi Ying as a real person.
But now, that same Qi Ying was here, very much real. He tried to overlap the blurry image with the man in front of him, but it seemed almost absurd to do so; he was so far from Yin Yu’s expectations. After all, what were the chances of coincidentally meeting your mysterious crush from a dating app and discovering he looked like a god? Totally nuts, had to be a lie. However, there was no reason for he to lie. He gained nothing out of it. So, Yin Yu was probably dreaming. That would make more sense than whatever this situation was.
“Say, are you mad at me?” Quan Yizhen asked. “You stopped replying.”
Yin Yu came back from his musings. He remembered the confusion, humiliation and betrayal that led him to stop chatting with Qi Ying. He now had a face to direct his anger to.
“You sent me a weird message, what did you expect?”
Quan Yizhen’s eyes widened. “Ah, that wasn’t me!”
“Wasn’t you?” Yin Yu looked askance.
“No. A classmate told me I had to be more forward if I wanted to get serious with you.”
“‘Serious’. So you asked... you asked for nudes?”
“I didn’t! He sent the messages for me.”
Yin Yu scrunched his eyebrows together.
“I punched his face when he told me.”
“You punched him?”
Quan Yizhen nodded.
“Serves him right,” Yin Yu mumbled.
“I told you in my messages,” Quan Yizhen said and his expression turned wistful. “I guess you didn’t read them.”
Yin Yu felt a pang of remorse, but he quickly stopped himself. He had already made so many mistakes. He couldn’t fall for this guy’s tactics now.
“Of course I didn’t.” Yin Yu huffed. “If this is some sort of game for you, I’m not playing along. Leave.”
“No! I’m not playing. It’s the truth.”
“Why should I believe you? I don’t really know you.”
“You do. Everything I told you was real. I was looking forward to your messages every day.”
The pang of hurt was there again. Yin Yu felt compelled to believe him, to comfort him. After all, he had gotten used to do that through all their conversations.
Still, Yin Yu shouldn’t trust Quan Yizhen. For all he knew, he might be making up everything. But in the remote case that he was truthful, then Yin Yu wanted to know one thing.
“Why was it me?” Yin Yu asked.
“What?”
“Why did you contact me in TanTan?” That had been a question Yin Yu had since the beginning. “There are so many men, I didn’t even reply to you at first, so... why? Why didn’t you even upload a proper picture? You would’ve gotten so many matches!”
“What’s wrong with my picture?”
“It’s freaking unintelligible!”
“For real? I didn’t notice.”
Yin Yu was speechless. He very much wanted to hit this guy now. “Just answer. Why me?”
Quan Yizhen bit his bottom lip. “I wanted to date someone,” he replied. “Everyone always tells me I’m missing out. I wanted to see if dating was that great. I liked a lot of profiles but only matched with you.”
Not surprising. Quan Yizhen’s profile seemed a joke, who would look at it twice?
“With time, I’m sure you would have gotten more matches,” Yin Yu said, however.
Quan Yizhen shrugged. “When I began chatting with you I stopped caring about that.”
“You didn’t have to settle with the first option. What if there was someone better suited for you?”
“Better suited?”
Yin Yu nodded. It didn’t have to be him. It was a mere chance that they ended up chatting.
“What are you saying, ge? We have so many things in common. You like wrestling and scallion pancakes. You recommend movies to me. You also remember the things I tell you. There’s no one better than you.” Quan Yizhen smiled. “Also, your face’s pretty. You’re as beautiful as in your photos, ge.”
Yin Yu’s mind went blank. “W-what?”
“A classmate told me that most pictures in dating apps are fake or edited, but you look the same,” Quan Yizhen explained. “Beautiful.”
Having those things said to his face made Yin Yu go red. It was unreal to have such a handsome man call him beautiful. This definitely had to be a dream.
In that moment, Quan Yizhen’s phone made a sound. He took a look at it.
“Ah! Ge, I have to give you your food. Time’s almost up.”
Yin Yu had forgotten all about the food until that moment. He took the offered paper bag. Quan Yizhen tapped his phone a couple of times and then put it away. There was a moment in which no one said a thing.
“I... guess that’s all,” Yin Yu eventually said.
“Wait, ge. Will you talk with me again?”
“I have no reason to.”
“Give me another chance.” Quan Yizhen pleaded. “I won’t ask you weird things, I promise.”
“You want to talk with me that much?”
“Yes. I like talking with you. You don’t?”
Yin Yu couldn’t lie to himself. He enjoyed talking to Quan Yizhen, much more than he wanted to admit, but he hated being taken advantage of. If he was willing to give Quan Yizhen the benefit of doubt, he also wanted to have a insurance.
“I still don’t trust you. Take a pic with me.”
“Huh?”
“If you do, I’ll answer your texts. If you try to play me, I’ll post your picture and number everywhere.”
Quan Yizhen had his mouth hanging. After seeming to think it over, he nodded. “Deal.”
Yin Yu cleared his throat. “T-then, I’ll take it.”
He opened the camera app on his phone and positioned himself beside Quan Yizhen. Yin Yu had asked this kind of thing because he needed the photo. Definitely not because he was interested in Quan Yizhen, whatsoever.
“Come closer and... um, put your hand on my shoulder,” Yin Yu said.
Shameless behavior, Yin Yu admonished himself in his mind.
If Quan Yizhen found the situation weird, he didn’t voice it aloud. He followed Yin Yu’s instructions and put his arm around Yin Yu’s shoulders.
Yin Yu gulped. He held his phone high to take a selfie, but his hand was slightly trembling. With effort, he stabilized the device and even remembered to smile.
“Ready? 1, 2...” Yin Yu snapped several photos in sequence. “done.”
Yin Yu opened his gallery to check the photos. Quan Yizhen leaned over to see as well. Yin Yu noticed he was still touching his shoulder. He tried to ignore that and focus on the photo instead. He shouldn’t have. The moment Yin Yu saw the picture, he wanted to throw his phone away.
The picture was extremely awkward. On one part, Yin Yu’s face was completely pink, seeming feverish. His smile was forced and skewed. Being dressed in the old t-shirt didn’t help at all. On the other part, Quan Yizhen didn’t bother to smile. He had a fierce gaze, slightly frowning. His hand on Yin Yu’s shoulder was unnecessarily tensed, and, somehow, his figure was blurry. Yin Yu checked the four photos he managed to take and all of them had similar problems. In all of them, Quan Yizhen was unfocused. Yin Yu realized that despite being good looking, Quan Yizhen wasn’t photogenic at all. He almost wanted to laugh.
“Can you send me that photo?” Quan Yizhen asked.
“You want it? It’s not that...” Yin Yu couldn’t finish. Quan Yizhen’s gaze was so clear and genuine. He changed his words. “Sure, why not?”
Quan Yizhen eyes shined. Yin Yu found that it was incredible easy to read his expressions. How could someone like him even think of deception? Yin Yu was sure that he wouldn’t be fooled by Quan Yizhen even if he tried.
“I have to go now, ge...” Quan Yizhen made no attempt to move.
“Alright.”
“I’ll message you.”
“Yes.”
“You’ll reply, right?” Quan Yizhen pouted.
Yin Yu avoided looking at him directly, it seemed that Quan Yizhen’s gaze had a strange effect on him. In the back of his mind, there was a voice telling him that he should cut ties with Quan Yizhen. However, Yin Yu had given his word, he wouldn’t go back on it. Not with this guy that seemed ready to do everything Yin Yu asked of him—which in itself was a mortifying thought. He put a hand over his face. “Yes, I’ll reply.”
Quan Yizhen grinned. “I’ll message you soon, ge! Wait for it!” Quan Yizhen took his delivery bag and ran down the hallway. Then, he stopped and looked back. “Don’t forget to reply! See you!”
Like a hurricane, Quan Yizhen left in a flurry. Yin Yu stood in his doorway for a moment longer. He wasn’t entirely sure he didn’t just hallucinate the whole thing. However, he looked at his phone and the totally real photo of Quan Yizhen and himself was there.
Yin Yu went into his apartment. At the same time, he sent the photo to Jian Yu. Not even 10 seconds later, his phone dinged with three new notifications.
Jian Yu:
oh for fucks sake a jock??? for real?????
Jian Yu:
is this your type?
Jian Yu:
Yin Yu I told you not to go out with jocks they suck
Yin Yu buffed at his friend’s dramatics. Before he could reply, he saw the notifications from TanTan piling in his notification bar. The truth was that he couldn’t bring himself to block Quan Yizhen’s profile even after he received those uncomfortable messages. Yin Yu didn’t turn off the notifications altogether due to the other chat he had. So instead he had let the notifications stay there, unopened. After hearing Quan Yizhen’s side of the story, he felt kind of guilty. His phone beeped then, and a new bubble joined the pile of unopened notifications.
Qi Ying · TanTan · now
I’m so happy we met

Yin Yu smiled bashfully. That guy was too much. Still, he tapped the notification and his chat with Blurry Guy opened. He read through the unread messages.

Yin Yu wanted to be swallowed by a hole. He should have read those messages before. If he had, he would have avoided hurting Quan Yizhen, he would have avoided accepting the awful date today, and maybe he would have attended a nice date with Quan Yizhen instead. He couldn’t do anything about that now, but he could try to make up for it.
Today

Yin Yu gripped his phone tightly. He didn’t know if things would go well this time, but he wanted to try without running away. He owed Quan Yizhen that much.
His phone beeped. A new message incoming.
Qi Ying:
Yes!!
Qi Ying:
I know the best place!!
Qi Ying:
I’ll take u whenever u want
Yin Yu’s heartbeat was loud in his ears and his face felt too warm. He felt so silly. Was this how liking someone was supposed to be? Maybe he was getting ahead of himself. He had learn that he could be impulsive too. However, he didn’t know why, but he had the feeling that it might turn alright with Quan Yizhen. Yin Yu opened his delivery food, all hungry, and smiled.
His phone dinged multiple times. Yin Yu opened WeChat and read the first three messages before rolling his eyes and flipping his phone down. He took a bite out of a wonton. He would enjoy his food now. Love, friends, texts could wait until he finished dining. His phone kept dinging, but Yin Yu ignored it with glee.
Jian Yu:
