Summary
A sharp knock wrapped against the cracked wooden door. Joel raised his eyebrows as he paused mid pour on what must be his third cup of lukewarm black coffee. Sighing, he raised his left wrist to glance at his watch-
mouth trembling as he looked at the broken glass face staring accusingly back at him.
Shaking his head, he placed his coffee on the stain speckled counter, pinching the bridge of his nose he bottled the raging memories away back into its little locked box- and threw away the imaginative key.
Walking towards the door, he took a moment to glance surreptitiously through the small golden peephole. Groaning quietly at who was on the other-side.
As if the person could predict his intention to quietly slip back into his room, she taunted,
"I know you're there Miller. Open the door."
Rolling his eyes, he undid the chain, unlocked his deadbolt and cracked the door so only his face was showing. Her sharp brown eyes zeroed in on his bloodshot irises, the disheveled mess of his hair, the bags shadowing his under eyes. Her barely concealed grimace almost got the door slammed in her damn face.
"Marlene."
