Chapter Text

Fred and George’s Acid Pops

Welcome to today’s episode, and a huge hello to one of my best friends George Weasley! It’s also April Fool’s Day so we have an extra special recipe today! What is it, George?

Well, harry, in honor of April Fools Day and mine and Freds birthday we’re making Acid Drops!

I’m sorry George, I forgot that was also today. How are you doing? It’s your first birthday without Fred, isn’t it?

It is. But my therapist said it’s never a good idea to focus on the negatives of the situation and focus on the positives. Ever since the accident I’ve been way too deep in my own depression and I think today may be the best way to break out of the funk, especially since it involves pranking someone.

Wait, who are we pranking? I didn’t know this was a prank! And you’re making me complicit?!?!?!

Well, harrikens, I need a new partner in crime, so you’ll have to do! Besides, we’re pranking Ron!

He may actually enjoy that; he’s been kind of blue since Hermione left him for draco.

This actually won’t be the first time Ron gets pranked with this candy>

Wait then, shouldn’t he see it coming? And what exactly happened the first time?

Well, me and Fred made them when we were younger, and Ron was being a brat like he can sometimes be. So, me and Fred decided he needed to be taught a lesson, so we added a little extra acid to the drops. Being the greedy little fellow that he is he instantly put one in his mouth, and it wasn’t long before he was crying that we burned a hole in his tongue!

Oh, is that why he avoids them at honeyduke’s? You realize he has nightmares about that right?

He has nightmares about candy, some of us have nightmares about our brother being crushed while mountain climbing.

Ok so how are we going to get him to eat one?

That’s easy, WE aren’t. you are. He trusts you. You’re like his brother.

George, your mother basically adopted me at 11 we pretty much are brothers.

See, so it’ll make him happy! Now how about we actually start the recipe!

That’s a great idea so I see we have a bunch of ingredients. Sugar, water, corn syrup, cream of tartar, and citric acid. George, any idea what cream of tartar is because it doesn’t look like cream?

No clue at all harrikens! This is just the recipe we followed and kept doing whenever we made it!

Fair enough, so what’s our first step?

First, I need you to put some parchment paper on these two pans so that we can drop our candy onto later. Before you ask the parchment to keep them from sticking to the pan and wasting it,

Oh, wow that was my next question. So that’s done, I’m guessing that was the easy part?

Indeed, it was my young marauder’s apprentice!

Oh, so I’ll be a marauder after this?

No, you’ll be a Marauder if you pull this off.

Ok what’s next?

Ok in that small saucepan put everything except the citric acid in, then we’re going to cook it over medium heat while stirring it until the sugar is dissolved.

Not too complicated, I see why you two could make it now.

Are you questioning the genius of the infamous Weasley twins harry?

No not questioning, I’m outright denying it.

Just because there’s only one of us now doesn’t mean I won’t prank you!

Ok shutting up now! Ok its bubbling what do we do now?

Are there any crystals on the side of the pan?

No, should there be?

No but if there were we’d have to wash down the sides with some warm water to break them down.

Ok cool. What’s the next step?

Next, we’re going to keep cooking until it reaches a temperature of three hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

Ok we’re almost there…. and three hundred!! What next?

Now we remove it from heat and sprinkle in the acid of the acid drop, citric acid! And we stir until it’s nice and mixed.

Okay, I see you rubbing that spoon with oil why?

So, the syrup mixture doesn’t stick.

Yeah, I guess that would be a problem so now we just dip it into the mix and drop it on the parchment?

Correct young Harry!

You’re like two years older than me.

Hence the younger comment. Now we wait for them to cool. If you want, you can buy lollipop sticks and pour the mixture over them and make acid pops instead.

That sounds cool, not sure anyone would suck on one for long though.

There are people out there who are barmy enough to do it. Ginny loves them.

Well, she dated me, so her sanity was already in question.

Ah self-deprecation is the best sort of humor. Looks like our candies are done so let’s head off!

That appears to be the end of the show for the day. Tune in next time for another easy simple recipe anyone could do!

Notes:

Acid Drops
1/4 cup of water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon citric acid (can be bought online)
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside
Combine water, sugar, corn syrup, and cream of tartar in a small saucepan, cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved and mixture begins to bubble.
wash down sides of pan with pastry brush dipped in hot water if sugar crystals have started to form on the sides.
clip candy thermometer to pan and continue cooking and stirring until mixture reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Remove pan from heat. sprinkle citric acid over sugar syrup and stir to combine. When the bubbling stops use an oiled teaspoon to drop teaspoonfuls of syrup onto the prepared sheets 2 inches apart to allow room for spreading.
To store candies, wrap them in sheets of parchment paper, making sure candies don't touch as they will stick together.
