Chapter Text
*Somewhere in Ukraine*
“What the hell are you talking about, Dayvd?”
Dayvd threw his cards in the pile and leaned forward so they all could hear him. “I saw him. Death.”
“Bullshit.”
“No way.”
“In this economy?”
“Shut up and listen. I was out on patrol, near the Russian line, and I heard a drone fly overheard. There was an explosion, so I went that way. It was dark, but the moon was out, so I was being careful.” Dayvd stopped to slug back some whiskey. “And right in my ear, I heard the words, ‘Watch your six,’ and I flipped around and fired until my gun was empty. Two Russians. They were this close to killing me.”
“So, you lived? Who cares!” And they all laughed.
“And there he was, a man in a suit, black as night, riding a big white horse, and he gave me a salute before disappearing into the sky.” Charlie gulped. “It’s true! I swear on my mother’s grave!”
“Your mom’s alive!”
“A suit? Death wears like a weird cape. Did you see bones?”
Dayvd shook his head. “Fuck off. Don’t believe me, but he saved my ass.”
“You need more whiskey, or less!”
The barkeep brought another round. “Death rides a pale horse. Could be true.”
No one laughed after that.
