Work Text:
Katie,
It’s been a while since I last wrote you a letter.
Sorry about that.
Life has been good. Lonnie and I finally found a good apartment together. She’s been working on some new music with her band. Their music is really good. Maybe I’m biased though but still.
I’ve been doing well. I'm working on my photography. Lonnie helps me find new things to try and photograph to see what I’m drawn to the most but I think I’m finally figuring it out.
People. I think that’s what I’m gonna focus on when it comes to my photos. There’s so many different people and stories to tell here in San Francisco. I wanna tell you all about it and show you the city.
I know I said I’d come back eventually to visit but I was hoping you could come here instead. Maybe that’s selfish of me and maybe you’ll hate me for going back on my word that I’d visit there someday. I just can’t bring myself to do it.
San Francisco is beautiful. I feel happier than I ever have before. I think you’d like it here too. So yeah if you wanna visit then get ready for the best hug of your life. I really want to see you again.
I love you
Sam
Katie stared at the letter and let her eyes wander over the words again and again. She had had a feeling that Sam wouldn't want to come back here. She didn’t blame her at all. She just wanted to make sure she was safe and she was. Sam was safe. A long breath released from Katie’s lips as her shoulders relaxed. Sam had given her a chance to see her again. She had opened a door and there was no way in hell that Katie would reject that. After a minute her mind was set and she worked to find a paper and pen to let her sister know she was coming.
It was nerve wracking. Katie couldn’t stop her hands from trembling as she picked up her bag and looked down at the letter. Sam’s address wasn’t too far from here. One taxi ride and she would be there face to face with her little sister. The thought made Katie’s eyes grow misty and she tried her best to keep her voice steady as she told the taxi driver the address. Time felt like a blur. Her feet carried her step after step up the stairs until she reached the door. With a few deep breaths she knocked on the door.
“Coming!”
Katie felt tears well up in her eyes when she heard her little sister’s voice. The footsteps grew louder followed by the small thunk of a lock. The door opened and Katie’s eyes met Sam’s.
“You’re here,” Sam cracked a smile as tears started to sting her eyes.
“Of course I’m here.” Katie returned the smile then closed the distance between them and wrapped Sam in a tight hug. She felt Sam’s arms hold her close and felt her little sister’s body tremble as she cried. Both of them were quiet save for the sound of crying and sniffling coming from both of them.
“You were right,”
Sam looked up at her older sister.
“This really is the best hug of my life.”
Sam’s tears returned anew and she laughed. “I told you. Best hug of your life.” She returned to the hug and felt her happiness warm her heart. After all this time Katie was here. She was really here.
Sam couldn’t wait to show her the life she had built.
