Chapter Text
They noticed. The second Lily and Remus stepped in Mary’s door (an hour late mind you), Sirius burst into laughter so hard he physically buckled over with it. James, who shares the 1 collective braincell with Sirius had laughed equally as loud until his boyfriend had elbowed him in the ribs, so he was now staring up at the ceiling stifling giggles. Remus, not feeling the need to reprimand his boyfriend like Regulus did, simply patted Lily on the back and loped over to collapse into the couch. Sighing, she followed him, plopping herself down next to James and Regulus cuddled up to one another. James grinned at her, always managing to exude endless amounts of joy and Regulus, well, His glare seemed softer than normal which must be his equivalent of all out beaming. How him and James got together in the first place, she’ll never understand. A few years ago if you had told Lily, or even James and Regulus themselves, that they would be together and grossly lovey dovey in front of all of their friends and Regulus’ brother they would have laughed in your face. In fact, a few years ago if you told them Regulus and Sirius would be out of their shitty abusive house and talking to each other again they would have laughed. But once you had seen Regulus and James together once, and witnessed first-hand the love and care they share you could never imagine them apart again. They weren’t the only couple in the friend group though, not by a long shot. Remus and Sirius, once they had gotten over their 5 year long pining ‘we’re just really close friends’ thing had gotten together, and were now coming up on their two year anniversary. Marlene and Dorcas -who met when Reggie introduced all of his friends to the rest of the group- had gone through a brief period of absolutely hating each other’s guts, but were now happily dating and were probably the healthiest couple of the lot. Barty and Evan, new additions to the group thanks to Regulus, along with Evan’s twin sister Pandora, had only started dating recently, but they were making up for lost time by spending every second together wrapped completely around each other in frightening displays of PDA.

Seeing as they had turned up an hour late everyone else was already there, lying across various couches, chairs, and in Pandora’s case, the floor. They were all squished into Mary’s tiny living room clustered around a table where it looked like people had started to set up a board game and then given up. Remus was sitting on the couch opposite her, Sirius’ feet up on his lap talking to Marlene. When Marlene saw her looking she grinned madly and winked. “Pucker up Evans I’m coming!” she yelled across the room, far too loudly for the slightly squishy space. Lily flushed and quickly diverted her gaze to Marlene’s girlfriend, Dorcas, who was sitting at her feet talking to Pandora who was, as usual was splayed out on the floor like a starfish. She smiled softly at Lily. “I love your t-shirt” she said dreamily, “is it a new one?” “Thanks Pandora. Remus bought it for me.” Lily smiled back. Pandora hummed softly and then went back to staring at the ceiling and chattering to Dorcas about the animals at the rescue centre she volunteered at. Across the room, so entwined you couldn’t tell where one stopped and the other started, were Evan and Barty. They looked completely in their own world as usual so Lily moved on to the last member of their little group. They used to have another friend Peter, who James knew from childhood, but after he threatened to out Reg for being trans last year none of them wanted anything to do with him, So Mary was the final member of the group packed into the tight space. And Lily was absolutely head-over-heels in love with her. She was wearing a red tight dress with a sheer floral lace layer overtop and a black leather jacket. She had her beloved doc martens, black tights and an abundance of jewellery adorning her neck, fingers and ears. She was the most breathtakingly beautiful person Lily had ever seen. Mary turned her head and they locked eyes. Lily could feel her pulse quickening and her face getting hot. Marlene, of course, interrupts the moment. “Who you ogling at- ow!” She gets cut off by Sirius walloping her in the stomach. Lily must remember to thank him later. She broke the eye contact to stare at her lap, shame colouring her features. She spared a glance at Mary to see her also looking mortified. Oh god, had she totally misjudged that whole interaction? Did Mary just think she was a creep who had spent the last 10 minutes staring at her? She got pulled out of her spiral by a pillow to the face. She looked up to see Dorcas grinning wildly at her, and the rest of her friends in the middle of the room engaged in all-out pillow warfare. Picking up the pillow now lying in front of her she charged at Dorcas. “You’re gonna regret that Meadowes!” She yelled, leaping over the coffee table to get to her.
