“When I was about your age i disassembled my father”
“But it was just an accident” Maya interjected
“Yes it was but naturally he didn't take too kindly to being disassembled even after i reassembled him so i was kicked out afterwards”
He closed his eyes He tried to erase that part of his life but it still affects him in more ways than one “The guilt killed me for the longest time…..as an orphaned homeless kid i would do anything to survive on the streets”
Maya gave a look of sympathy thinking about the times she had to sell her little inventions to people for money until Kai recently met her
Overhaul continued “i came across a book that talked about how quirks were evolved from a disease that came from rats, it made me feel even more filthy about myself, it made me wish that i never had a quirk to begin with…to be pure”
Maya didn't know how to feel about that, she thought that people with quirks were better off than her because they had more to offer society, sure she still believed that her inventions could help people like she did for Fuyumi but these people have powers….she never thought someone- anyone would hate themselves because of it
Doesn't he see that his quirk could help people? that it was a blessing and not a disease she dared to ask him if he ever did help someone with his quirk "Have you ever managed to help someone with your quirk?" She asked meekly
He sighed “The first time i remember “helping” anything was when i came across a dead crow, it's chest had been ripped open with teeth marks suggesting that an animal had done it”
Maya winced at that “I used my quirk to reassemble it, i managed to save it, pops eventually found me and just took me in”
Maya didn't bother questioning who “Pops” was assuming he's the real boss of Shie Hassaikai
Kai sighed brushing off the uneasy feeling he got from his past memories “i told you this because we're somewhat similar, you were abandoned by your parents for something that wasn't your fault”
Maya nodded slightly in agreement
He averted his eyes down to his hands “But they were fools, fools who didn't know that you were pure…pure and free of this disgusting disease that has plagued and corrupted humanity”
There was that uneasy silence that had fallen upon the room “So you should know that whatever you think of yourself because of them is wrong-”
“You're wrong too” Kai looked up from his hands and has his gaze on Maya who had interrupted him
“You're not a monster you never were and you shouldn't see yourself as a disease for something that wasn't your fault, from the way i see it with a quirk like yours you could be the best doctor there ever was”
That silence had fallen upon them once again Maybe I shouldn't of said anything…it wasn't my place to say such a thing Maya couldn't make out what he was thinking with his black face mask on but he had his eyes narrowed. Did she anger him?
“Sorry it wasn't my place to-”
“Thank you”
Maya blinked he wasn't mad?
He walked off to leave her alone in the extra room to unpack her other things in privacy.
As Kai walked off in the hall he felt the uneasiness from his memories fade ever so faintly, what's with that kid? Is it what she said that made him feel better? Kai shook off his thoughts and went to his office
