fun house [filk]

Summary:

looking twice before you leap in faith is wasting time
naught left below to catch us but traps of their design
we are nothing more than pawns that are meant to be used
your choices were made for you before you even tried to move

Back again with a (somewhat) fannish song! This time with a heavy dose of unreality and uncanny valley. Inspired by what I imagine Tim Stoker would experience during the Unknowing, but since the lyrics don’t directly reference canon, it’s open to interpretation and application to other media as y’all see fit!

Filk implied to be from Tim’s perspective (narrator is unreliable and go boom ahaha). Features original lyrics, vocals, and an attempt to approximate an auditory version of uncanny valley, with a semi-orchestral, semi-electronic original instrumental to accompany it all!

Part of the Filk Broken Telephone, a party favor for Pod Together 2024.

Notes:

IMPORTANT NOTE: due to an unforeseen emergency, i am hours from home without the laptop that has this audio file on it, so this is just lyrics for now. my sincerest apologies; once i get back home i will upload the audio!

hi! if you don’t know me (and you probably don’t), i’m fic. :) welcome to my segment of my team’s filk broken telephone 2024—a party favor for pod together 2024!

we were put into teams, and each team put into an order. starting with the first person, we were to each create a filk—that is, a song related to fandom and/or sci-fi, be it original or parody. here's the catch, though: we had to create ours inspired by the one made by the teammate before us. it's a bit like a game of telephone, hence the name!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

fun house

listen along!

[audio coming soon]

read along!

[ verse one ]

wander through the maze of mirrors staring back at me

each distorted face looks less like what i should see

knowing i cannot escape a fate that’s worse than death

these are my lungs but i’m not what will take my last breath

[ verse two ]

dodging writhing bodies falling round in contortions

it’s a costume party of grotesque proportion

dancing creatures wearing faces that are not their own

we entered together but i know that i will leave alone

[ chorus ]

twirl me round in dizzying bounds to swirling sounds of crazes

dip me down and douse me now and anoint my brow with blazes

what’s the point but something sharp, as it lances through my heart

fixed in time, unfinished rhyme, and a disappointing end

[ verse three ]

best to ignore all the grabbing hands and frightful cries

mask the masquerade behind false smiles and glass doll eyes

is there use in cheating a carnival game that’s rigged?

using, losing, bruising, makes me want to just give in

[ verse four ]

looking twice before you leap in faith is wasting time

naught left below to catch us but traps of their design

we are nothing more than pawns that are meant to be used

your choices were made for you before you even tried to move

[ chorus ]

twirl me round in dizzying bounds to swirling sounds of crazes

dip me down and douse me now and anoint my brow with blazes

what’s the point but something sharp, as it lances through my heart

fixed in time, unfinished rhyme, and a disappointing end

[ bridge ]

the time has come, the change begun, pleas grant no impunity

such lunacy never before seen, come dance in revelry

too late to stop the grisly scene as i become them and they become me

no need for individuality when all there’s ever been was we

[ chorus ]

twirl me round in dizzying bounds to swirling sounds of crazes

dip me down and douse me now and anoint my brow with blazes

what’s the point but something sharp, as it lances through my heart

fixed in time, unfinished rhyme, and a disappointing end

[ chorus ]

one last chance to checkmate the king and so my moving is sudden

it’s my turn, and i never learn, so i will press all their buttons

stranger things i’ve yet to see but perhaps the stranger one is me

time is nigh, with shaking sigh, and then i come to an end

Notes:

let me know your thoughts! it’s very different from my usual style as a songwriter—a lot heavier in the figurative language and the mood. i feel like it lends to what i’m portraying, but it’s new for me so idk if i went too far or not far enough or what.

thank you so much for listening—if you want to hear some more super cool stuff, i urge you to click on through the broken telephone 2024 collection if you haven't already! thanks once again, and i hope that you have a wonderful rest of your day<3
