Summary
Greyjoy’s Rebellion is in its death throes. The self-proclaimed King of the Iron Islands loses both his sons, then his islands, then his castle. When Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark breach the walls of Pyke, Balon Greyjoy is left with little choice but to surrender the Driftwood Crown and bend the knee. He is permitted to keep his head and his seat - on the condition that the younger of his two daughters is raised as a ward of Lord Eddard at Winterfell, and in time married to his eldest son and heir.

It was Prince Maron who had been with Mother and Asha and Quen when the raven came with news that Rodrik was dead, slain at Seagard by the Mallisters. He bore that weight as he did all the others; frowning, nodding, with a little boy’s frightened eyes in a young man’s bearded face. Prince Maron was the one to order more ships patrolling the waters around Pyke, but it was Quen’s brother who held Mother when she cried.
Maron had turned to Quen and Asha afterwards, his eyes brown as their mother’s and hard as their father’s beneath the fear. He promised to protect them from the greenlanders. No one would hurt them, he swore. He would die before he let it happen.
Go ahead and die for us, then, if you’re so eager, she’d sneered.
And so he did.
...
Father had not been pleased to learn his spare heir spent his spare time building sandcastles with little girls, and Maron changed as he got older. His smiles grew meaner, losing all traces of affection. His good-natured teasing became vicious. It did not take long until the brother who used to play salt kings and rock kings was gone forever before Quen could even realize she was losing him. -
