Work Text:

They were going to steal his coat- they were going to steal his coat. He heard it, they may think he doesn’t understand human language but he does.

The water blessed him with that ability, alongside cursing him with his skin. If he wasn’t a Selkie, these people wouldn’t want him.

They can’t steal his coat. That would be terrible- he wouldn’t be able to escape, all hope gone, desperately falling for whoever held it. Forgetting his life in the sea. Forgetting his freedom.

He needed out, now. He had to escape before they did.. that to him..

How could he, though? His plan wasn’t fully formed, he just wanted to flee back to his cousin.

He just wanted his freedom. Please.

And as the humans took him out of his tank, he knew his time was gone. They were taking his pelt. His skin. His freedom. His rights. His abilities- all he had left.

Everything. Left.

As he was put under, Jimmy made sure his last thoughts were of Grian, and playing in the sea as a younger child.

Child.

He was only young. Even now.

Jimmy opened his eyes with a gasp- his freedom- no please- he looked down at himself.. human. His pelt on the end of his bed. His bed.

Just a nightmare.

He was safe, he was safe, he was safe… he repeated it in his head until he was somewhat sure of it. He was safe.

Then, the tears came flooding out, thinking of his cousin he’d never find, thinking of the kind humans who’d saved him, his friends, ‘parents’ by law.

He sniffed, and sighed, as the tears rolled down, the majority of his panic gone now.

He got out of bed, mourning the feeling of the soft covers. Alas, he had something to do. He glanced at his calendar- more of a reminder Lizzie set up for him.

Apparently, he was Lizzie’s lost sister- entrusted to his cousin, who raised him more as if they were brothers. However, he really saw Lizzie as more of a friend than anything, and Grian as his brother.

The human laws thought Grian didn’t exist, though, and that Lizzie was his mother. It was weird, but he coped with it.

He missed Lizzie, either way, but she was busy.

He wondered when he even went to sleep- he had been planning on leaving in the night to visit the sea, the ocean that called out to him.

Either way, the calendar-reminder-thing on his wall said he had to work with the newest worker today, some guy named ‘Scott’.

Time to get ready for that, he guessed. Maybe he could visit Lizzie tonight, too. Joel would let him, probably.
