Eternity, Side by Side

Summary:

The past was gone, and someday the present would be, too; but they would always be at each other's sides for eternity.

Work Text:

The Bakumatsu era was over. The Meiji restoration had been completed more than a lifetime ago. Everyone else from that period of history was long dead and gone forever. Even the heroic spirits they reunited and made amends with, no matter how much the pair might not want to think about it, were just copies of the originals created by the Throne of Heroes. There was no going back to the way things used to be. Ever.

This wasn't a topic either of them liked to dwell on. Nor, as of late, the subject of how when their time at Chaldea truly came to an end, there was no guarantee they'd ever see any of these people and heroics spirits that they'd become so fond of ever again. Including their own friends from back then. Thinking about depressing topics like those so much wasn't good for the heart.

That wasn't to say they forgot about the positives, however, even as life would inevitably move on. Copies or not, they were both glad to see familiar faces again and spend time with them, just like in the old days. Their master was an admirable human being who was dear to both of them, and nothing could change that. Their experiences here had even brought the two of them closer than ever, and they couldn't have been more grateful for it.

But it was still comforting, in the small moments when those depressing thoughts seeped through the cracks of their minds, that no matter what else, Ryouma and Oryou would always be there with each other. Nothing would, or could, break them apart a third time. They'd always have each other to lean on.

In a world that was ever changing, it was reassuring to know that at least this fact - them being together forever - would never change.

And that was enough to get them through.
