Work Text:
When her daughter was invited at Auradon, The Queen of Heart had a perfect plan to get revenge at the Auradonians, through her daughter. She had made it clear. She wanted Red to stay at school and act normal until winter prom where all the kids parent would be invited. This was where everything was supposed to change.
Red true to herself had no intention of doing this at first, she just wanted to live her life away from her mother. She wanted to be free from her mother. But her mother did believe that she would not let her down and that is why she allowed Red to go to Auradon.
The first day of school, Red had chosen to stay alone. A blue haired girl tried to talk to her but she didn’t cared. Red knew that friends were a waste of time, her mother had taught her well. « Love ain’t it» she would tell her everyday.
« Since this is the first day of school, we are going to make an ice break game » Mrs Keeplin explained to her class, who looked all exited to be here. Except for one student, Red. Red was on her own in the back of her class, listening to everyone talking but not talking to anyone, and not letting a single emotion show on her face.
« Meredith would you pair with another student to play the game? » Her teacher hesitantly asked.
«It’s just Red. » She simply answered when the blue haired girl came next to her and said.
« I’ll pair with you! I’m Chloe Charming! » She looked really excited to talk to her. Red was wondering what did she wanted from her? The kindness of the girl was too much for Red to be sincere. She was not used to that.
The day went on and she had to deal with Chloe all day. She was happy when she thought it was over until Fairy Godmother alongside Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos the originals VK’s who were now in charge of the program came to their class room. Everybody got up showing respect to them so Red did the same.
« Hello everyone we hope you’re having a good day you can all sit down. » Fairy Godmother announced.
« We are very happy to be here for another at Auradon prep! As you know I am the president of the VKs exchange program. This year we are happy to welcome Ginny Gothel, Daughter of mother Gothel from the isle. Princess Hazel Westergaards daughter of Hans from the Isle. And last but certainly not least, Princess Meredith of heart daughter of the Queen of Heart from Wonderland. » Mal explained.
«It’s Red. » the red haired girl mentioned.
«My apologies Red. We are going to give you your dorms number and you will come with the person you were paired with to take the keys. So… »
Fairy Godmother listed the names and their dorms number. It was quite boring to Red until she heard:
« Princess… Red of heart dorms 214 with Princess Chloe Charming. » She was too stunned to speak, or to even get up and get her keys until Chloe made her sign to get up. She got up and took her key.
She thought what was wrong with this blue haired girl and why did they paired us together. When going to their room she still hadn’t talked to chloe. She silently put her stuff on the table next to a bed she had decided was hers. The Charming princess would have to take the other.
« Don’t you think it’s fun that they paired us together? » Chloe asked her roommate.
«I think it’s weird, I don’t see why it would be funny? » Red coldly answered.
«Well I’m cinderella’s daughter and you’re the daughter of-»
«A villain ? » Red cut her off and raised her eyebrow.
«What-? No. I mean you know our mothers spent their time together here that’s why I thought it was funny. » Chloe explained.
Red was confused. Her mother had never had any friend and had not studied at Auradon what was this girl talking about?
« You must have the wrong person, my mother don’t do friends. » Red ironically laughed at the thought of her mother having friends being in the same sentence.
«What? No! You’re mom’s name is Bridget right ? » Chloe was now confused too.
«Uh yeah. But not all bridget’s are Queen of Heart, your bridget is not my mom. » Red retorted starting to get annoyed.
« No but my mom told me all about yours. They used to be best friends you didn’t know? I brought some pictures of them when they were studying at Merlin Academy before it turned into Auradon, I thought you would have some too and we could look at them. » Chloe replied not believing that the other girl had no idea about this.
«Hold on what? We can’t be talking about my mom, she’s anything but sweet, she hates Auradon and she’s against friendship and anything love related. I want to see those pictures. » Red notified.
Boths of the girls couldn’t believe the others word. But it turned out that Chloe was telling the truth, she showed the pictures of her mother with ella, she looked so different. Happy, sweet and way too pink. Red was getting emotional seeing this she didn’t know if it was the fact that her mother had never told her about this or the fact that her mother was a whole complete different person and she had no idea about it.
«It’s weird that she didn’t tell you about it though, from what I know by my mother, they were inseparable. » Chloe mentioned which was really not a smart move unless she wanted to make Red cry.
«Well my mother is different now. She doesn’t make friends and she hates Auradon, and so do I. We may live together but we are not friends leave me alone.» Red tried to brush the pain in her voice. Chloe picked up her pictures and hanged them on her side of the wall.
Red was hurt about her mother and she didn’t wanted to be in auradon but she didn’t wanted to go back to Wonderland either. Chloe on her side was frustrated, she couldn’t understand why would Red’s mother not talk about her past to her own daughter but she couldn’t understand why was Red mean to her when it was her mother that hurt her.
They kept not talking to each other unless necessary for a while. Obviously Chloe had made other friends at school now but Red was struggling to adjust even with the other VK’s kid. The only thing Red actually liked was her check up with Mal and Evie. That was Evie’s idea to make the older VK’s to check twice a week on the younger VK’s and how well they were doing and how well they were adjusting.
Since a few weeks had passed and Red was starting now to trust and even like Mal and Evie especially Mal. There was something about Mal that Red admired, she saw her as an older sister which was something she never had before.
« You know Red, I was just like you 5 years ago, and I survived because I had my friends who are now my family. » Mal explained to the 16 year old girl.
«I don’t get along with anyone here, I’ve never had a friend my mother doesn’t let me. » Red confessed.
« The thing is, you’re free from your mother, you don’t have to do everything she says, and you don’t have to change yourself to please her because trust me it will never be enough. » Mal reassured the teenage girl
« What about your roommate? Do you not get along? » Evie questioned
« Chloe, she’s nice I guess but she lives in a fantasy world. She wanted to be friend with me because apparently our mothers were friends when they were younger. I got mad at her because my mother had never told me about it. We dont really talk now.» Red admitted realising she may have been too hard on her roommate who just wanted to be a friend.
Mal explained to her that being mean to other people will never make her feel better and that she should actually try to talk about her feelings. Evie offered to search for the yearbook pictures and all the records from when her mother was in Merlin Academy so she would have more answers and she also advised her to talk to Chloe.
With time, Chloe and Red started being real friends much to Chloe’s happiness. They would spend time together at the library and play some games in their room before sleeping. Red had learned that her mother’s hurt was not something she wanted to pass on people so she actually took Mal’s advice and talked about her feelings to Chloe. She was surprised when she listened and comforted her instead of telling her that it was how life was and that she should stop overreacting.
Red did not wanted to go on with her mother’s plan anymore but she knew the second her mother would be here she would have no choice but to follow through it. She may feel free now that she was alone, her mother would still have control if she was in front of her.
It was a week before Winter Prom now and Red was a nervous wreck. Luckily she had a check up today with Mal and Evie and she decided to bring Chloe to it, as an emotional support. She felt really nervous that she didn’t even waited until it was her appointment hours her and Chloe immediately went to Mal and Evie’s office.
Chloe stopped in front of the door thinking Red would knock but the red haired girl straight up opened it without bothering to knock.
When opening the door she was not expecting to see Evie and Mal kissing passionately with their hands all over each other so she raised her eyebrows and waited for them to separate while Chloe opened her mouth and turned around in shock.
« Girls! You could’ve knocked! » Evie complained while letting go of Mal and trying to fix her lipgloss.
« Well you could have locked the door? » Red sassily replied.
«Chloe? » Mal wondered looking at the turned around girl.
«Yes? » Chloe hesitantly replied still not wanting to turn around
« You can turn around dumbass. » Red laughed and Chloe turned around with an apologetic look on her face.
«I’m really sorry. » she apologised to Mal and Evie.
«You see Red, now that is what i call good manners.» Mal jokingly lectured. « You’re forgiven just don’t tell anyone we’re not out, yet. »
« Yeah we won’t. » Chloe assured
« Anyway I came early because I don’t want my mother to come for prom. Can we not send her the invitation ? » Red asked worried.
Sadly, Mal and Evie explained her that all the letters for parents had already been sent and her mother had accepted it. She was done she thought. All she had finally got to have in Auradon will be gone in a week. She was worried and all of them told her it would be fine but they actually had no idea what was about to happen.
Red spent the week stressed and irritated, while Chloe spent it exited about prom and having her parents and brother back.
When the day finally came Red still had hope that it wouldn’t go as bad as it was supposed to be. She was wearing a red dress with black corset, her hair was put in a half pony and she had a black tiara on with red gems. Chloe was wearing a short but puffy light blue dress with a see through corset and white flowers on it, light blue shoes with transparent diamonds on them, and her hair was in a side braid with two strands on the front and a silver tiara with blue gems on it.
Chloe’s family were already here, they were all in the prom hall complimenting how great she looked. Except Chad who was flirting with random girls. Cinderella even said Red looked very pretty and that she reminded her of her mother. Red was even more nervous and her mother was not even here yet. She decided to let Chloe with her family and she went towards the 4 original VK’s who were with Uma and Harry for once.
«You’re going to be okay Red, don’t stress. » Evie rubbed her back. «And you look absolutely stunning.» she added.
« I know I love it which makes me even more scared because she’s never loved how I dress. I hope she’ll think im pretty tonight.» Red said but stopped at the stop of the music and the people started whispering to each other.
There she was, she felt like she couldn’t breathe and reached for Mal’s hand. There was no way she would survive this day.
«Oh hello Red. » The Queen of Heart said with a cold tone analysing her daughter from head to toe. «What is it that you’re wearing seriously, Red, you should look pretty it’s prom! »
Red faked smiled and let go of Mal’s hand. Everybody was watching the scene and Red had never felt more humiliated than now. Chloe and Cinderella had now joined her.
«Bridget. » Cinderella said surprised to see how she had changed.
« It’s the Queen of Hearts. » She coldly replied.
« Hello, I am Red’s friend and cinderella’s daughter, Chloe! » Chloe introduced herself as Red shook her head wanting desperately for it to be over.
The queen of heart got mad at Red for having a friend, and she decided it was time for her plan to begin. She took a few carts out and started to shuffle it.
«Mom please don’t do this you don’t have to! » Red almost cried when everyone was silent in the room.
The QoH did not bother to respond and started to throw the cards in all side of the room letting a Wonderland magic guard appear from every card that was thrown.
Everyone started running and panicking until Mal took her spell book and said:
« Whispered words, cards take flight, vanish now from mortel sight! »
And by that all of The QoH’s cards had vanished.
« NO! » She yelled in frustration which scared Red. « You will all regret this! You! The daughter of Maleficent how dare you go and serve those hypocrites! My daughter may be a disappointment but I pray she never ends up like you! Red, go get the wand! » The Queen of heart commanded, which made Red’s heart almost stop in her chest.
She was lost, who’s side should she be with? Her mother about to be put in prison if she didn’t get her the wand right now or the people who have been with her ever since she came to Auradon?
« RED! It is your time to prove me you worth. Be worthy for once! » Queen of Heart snapped at her daughter looking at her with a cold look.
Red snapped. She ran towards Fairy Godmother and grabbed the wand. Everyone in the room started to scream.
Red looked at her mother with tears in her eyes and then looked at Chloe, next to all the other VK’s.
« Red, I gave you this chance do not disappoint me give me the wand! » The queen of heart directed.
Red with tears in her eyes started walking towards her mother, about to give up everything she has ever wanted just to make her mother proud. About to give up her life for her mother’s.
« RED. Don’t do this. » Mal yelled as the red haired girl turned to look at her. « Don’t do this because I’ve been there, I know how you feel we all do. Right Evie? Jay? Carlos? Uma? Harry? » And they all nodded. « We have all been there and we gave up on our lives for our parent’s. And it would have ruined us if we hadn’t gave a chance to Auradon. Red, we talked about this. It will never be enough for your mother. YOU, will never be enough for her » Now Mal was starting to cry and all the VK’s had tears in their eyes. « But to us, to Chloe, to Auradon, you’re enough and your future is here, don’t ruin your life trying to please your mom, you’ll only lose yourself and I know what I’m talking about. » Mal wiped the tear off her face and started walking towards Red.
Red was crying now too, she didn’t want to give up on either her life or her mom. Mal got closer to Red, hugged her and took back the wand, the Auradon Guard cuffed the queen of heart.
«And I thought you could never be worse than her…» Red heard her mother say behind her before getting taken by the guards.
All the VK’s, Fairy Godmother, Cinderella and Chloe came towards Red to hug her. She looked miserable, had just lost her mother’s love for ever now and there was no going back.
« You did the right thing Red, I’m so proud of you. » Chloe told her. Maybe Red would never admit it but Chloe saying this right now was really helping her. She may have lost her mom but she never really had her did she?
They all comforted Red, and ended up having a fun night, the following days were kind of hard for Red, but she had everyone’s support and mostly, she had a future here. In Auradon like she always wanted.
Red was getting better, she still had check ups with Mal and Evie and probably will start therapy soon. But she was closer than ever with Chloe, she felt and was free, she was excelling school and had no one to turn her life into hell. So maybe it was not so bad to lose someone who would have never liked her for who she was if that meant getting to finally be happy, after 16 years of life.
