A Tree Named Celeborn

Summary:

After the War of Wrath, what was originally planned as a temporary stay (a kind of moral quarantine) on Tol Eressea turns into a permanent settlement.
And so we also get another chapter in the history of the White Tree(s).

Notes:

This piece starts with a fragment of a teaching song about the lineage of the White Tree.
It is followed by a drabble in prose.
More on the prompts in the end notes.

Warning for references to canonical war and political tensions.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

What is my one, oh?
Telperion and the moon above, oh!
What is my two, oh?
Galathilion in the Great Square, oh!
What is my three, oh?
Celeborn…

There was an uncomfortable silence. The truth had to be faced. The evacuees from Beleriand would need to stay longer in Tol Eressea than planned. Despite their pitifully reduced numbers, tensions were still too high to allow return to the mainland. Tirion was struggling to reintegrate veterans of the War of Wrath, as it was.

‘We will focus on turning Avallone into a proper city,’ said Edhellos, firmly.

‘I brought you a seedling of Galathilion for the town square,’ said Finarfin. ‘This one is named…Celeborn.’

Edhellos grinned. The atmosphere lightened.

‘Maybe Celeborn will meet his namesake tree here one day!’

Notes:

The Tree of Tol Eressea (ancestor of the White Trees of Numenor and Gondor) and the elven character Celeborn do have the same name, although Tolkien changed his opinion about the origin of the second element in the character Celeborn's name later, so that the names would only sound as if they were the same, according to that interpretation.
