Kaz opened the door to the roof, stopping short to find Chase standing there, leaning on one of the utility boxes.
Kaz didn’t say anything, just gazed at the man in front of him. The setting sun’s light turned Chase’s skin warmly ablaze, drenched in gold highlights.
Kaz moved forward, noticing how Chase’s muscles tensed slightly at the unexpected presence.
“Hey, Smarties,” Kaz greeted, moving to stand next to Chase. He set the pack of beers he was holding onto the box, grabbing one for himself.
“Hi, Kaz,” Chase replied softly. Surely the warm air was causing the red to creep up the brunette’s neck?
“Whatcha doing out here alone?” Kaz asked. Chase shrugged, turning back to the sunset.
“Ever since I got out of the basement, I’ve always been fascinated with watching sunsets. How something so beautiful,” he turned to Kaz, “could be so fleeting.”
Kaz nodded. He knew Chase didn’t often like talking about his time living in a basement, but always let him talk when he did.
“Do you watch them often?” Chase smiled.
“Almost every day.”
Kaz nodded, grabbing another bottle from his pack and handed it to Chase, who took it reluctantly.
They sat in silence for a while, Chase watching the setting sun and Kaz not-so-subtly watching Chase, his temple free from the crease of worry and shoulders untensed.
After a few minutes, Chase turned back to Kaz, hopping up to sit on the utility box.
“How come you came out here?” He asked, taking a swig from his bottle. Kaz tried to not stare at how good Chase looked right now, backlight by the precious golden hour, his eyes closed and throat bobbing as he drank. Kaz swallowed.
“Well, uh…I heard from Skylar that the sunset was supposed to be pretty, so I decided to come check it out,” he replied. Chase raised an eyebrow, setting his bottle down and leaning over to Kaz. The movement made the shorter’s heart beat faster.
“You were going to drink an entire pack of beer by yourself?” He questioned, voice quiet. Kaz gave his usual lopsided grin, masking the nervousness he get around his crush.
“Well, I’ve done it before,” he chuckled. Chase made a simple ‘hmm’ sound and leaned back on his hands, closing his eyes.
“Does it meet your expectations?”
Kaz froze, thinking he got caught staring at Chase’s lean frame, highlighted by his tight muscle shirt.
“What?” Kaz responded meekly.
“The sunset,” the brunette replied breezily, eyes still closed. “You came up here to watch it. Is it good enough for you?”
Kaz smiled, pulse still speeding as he continued to stare at Chase.
“It’s perfect,” he whispered.
Chase opened his eyes, a deep red seeping up his neck and cheeks. He opened his mouth as if to say something then thought better of it, closing his mouth. Kaz peered at him curiously.
“What is it?” He asked, a spike of bravery bringing him to take a step closer. Chase blushed even more, if possible.
“Nothing…” Chase replied quietly, staring at Kaz. The former smirked as he took another step closer, moving to stand in between the brunette’s legs.
“What is it, Smarties?” Kaz whispered. Chase bit his lip, the action bringing Kaz’s eyes to his mouth.
“Just getting a bit cold,” Chase whispered, only just now realizing the sun was almost completely gone. Kaz smiled softly, his amber eyes rising up to Chase’s.
“Let’s fix that out, shall we?” He held a hand out, flames erupting into it, sending warmth out towards Chase. Kaz’s presence near him was definitely helping as well. Chase closed his eyes as he relished the warm feeling, tilting his head slightly.
Instinctively, Kaz reached a hand up to Chase’s jaw, cupping the soft skin slightly. Chase opened his eyes to look at Kaz, who was once again staring.
“What?” Chase whispered. Kaz didn’t answer for a second, just staring into his crush’s eyes. He suddenly felt a surge of confidence to see Chase so flustered.
“You look so beautiful,” Kaz murmured, his thumb rubbing circles into Chase’s jaw. Chase bit his lip again, Kaz noticing his gaze flickering down. That was all he needed before he began to lean in. He moved slow enough that he gave Chase plenty of time to pull away, but it didn’t happen. Chase surged forward, pressing his lips into Kaz’s in a quick peck.
They stared at each other for a second before Joining once again, lips meeting together in the most wonderful actions. Kaz let his fire sizzle out to wrap his arms around Chase’s waist, pulling him closer to himself.
Their lips melded perfectly as they moved, emotions pouring into their embrace. It was only them in this world, their own little bubble of time, where all they needed to worry about was bringing the other closer. Chase’s hands were at Kaz’s jaw, bringing his face back to his again and again as Kaz held him close.
Sadly, though, they had to break for air, pulling away reluctantly. They painted slightly as they stared at each other, cheeks dusted pink, lips red and wet.
Chase couldn’t help it as a small giggle of glee escaped his lips, his mouth pulling into a wide smile. He reached for Kaz, setting his head on his shoulder and the other leaned down to kiss along the base of his throat.
This was all they needed. Time with each other and everything would be okay.
