We Are Demigods

Chapter 6: A Gift

Notes:

I AM SO SORRY! You know, the problem with writing multiple stories at once is that I get little time to each and bigger and more frequent writer's blocks. It's shit and I can't stop making new stories.

Sorry this is a bit shorter than usual

Chapter Text

Mal awoke the next morning, in a much better mood than yesterday. She raced down to the mess hall and met up with her friends at Hades table.

“Hey guys.”

“You seem happy.” Evie commented. “Good sleep?”

“Yeah.”

The blue haired girl smiled at her and noticed her new jewelry.

“That’s new. Where did you get that?”

“Oh, it was a gift.” Mal answered.

“From who?” Jay asked.

Mal smiled, remembering what Persephone called her last night.

“My step-mom.”

The other three froze, Ben who was sitting with them seemed confused by the others’ reactions. He cleared his throat before speaking.

“Congratulations, Mal. But I must ask, how does she know where we are? Camp Half-Blood isn’t a place mortals would know about.”

Suddenly, an image of Malory finding out where she was came to mind and it scared her to her bones. She shuddered and her grip on her fork tightened. Ben seemed to notice.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to hit a nerve.”

“It’s ok. My mother doesn’t know where we are. Fuck I hope she doesn’t.”

“But you said-” Ben began.

“Mal, who gave you the bracelet?” Evie asked.

Evie had noticed the joy on Mal’s face when she mentioned this step-mother , clearly, she was someone Mal trusted.

“Persephone.”

All eyes widened.

“Persephone? Your father’s wife?” Carlos asked.

“Yeah. I went for a walk last night and she found me. Gave me the bracelet.”

“It’s a beautiful bracelet.” Evie said.

Mal held up a finger as she smiled. She stood up and detached Grave Hunter from her wrist and flicked it out. Instantly, it extended into a sword.

“Holy fuck!” Carlos shrieked.

“Wicked!” Jay said.

“Beautiful.” Evie said, but her gaze was flickering between the sword and the girl.

“Huh, nice sword.” Someone spoke behind her.

Mal turned around and found Uma standing there.

“Looks like you and I need to have some training.” Uma said as she grabbed her coin and flicked it into the air. When she caught it, it was a sword instead of the trident. “But I have to say, magical weapons are the best.”

Uma’s sword shrunk back down into its coin form before walking off. Once she put her coin back in her pocket, she went to her table and began eating. Mal placed the blade of the sword on her wrist and it immediately shrunk back down into a bracelet as well as coil around her wrist in the process.

Evie walked up behind Mal and placed a hand on her waist.

“Hey, ready to go? We have one more day of no classes.”

Where Evie placed her hand made Mal’s brain short circuit.

“Uh, what?”

“What do you want to do today?”

Mal took a moment to think, which was really hard, and then just smiled at her.

“Whatever you want to do.”

“What was I thinking!?” Evie yelled at Jay. “I put my arm around the back of her waist!”

“Yeah, I know. I saw.” Jay responded.

“What was I thinking?” She repeated.

Jay sighed.

They were at the Big House while Carlos and Mal were at the Volleyball court waiting for them to return.

“I can’t believe I did that. Do you think she noticed?”

“It looked like her brain malfunctioned. Of course she noticed.”

“Damn it!”

Evie started pacing. Jay groaned.

“Will you calm down? You do realize she feels the same way for you, right?”

“What? No she doesn’t!”

Jay face palmed.

“Idiots in love.”

“What?” Evie asked, not hearing him.

“Nothing. Look, no one is going to make you two date. It’s entirely up to you or her.”

“But what if she says no? What if she laughs in my face? What if the world comes to an end?”

Jay groaned as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Look, if she says no, she won’t, but if she says no, then you will just have to deal with it. And I can assure you that she won’t laugh and as for the world ending. Really?”

“It could happen.”

“You need to calm down, Blue. You will be fine. Now, let’s get back there. Mal and Carlos will be wondering where we are.”

“Ok, but I actually need to run to the restroom.”

Jay just smiled and shook his head as he returned to the game.

When Evie was about to exit the restroom, someone stopped her from leaving.

“Hey sexy.” Chad Charming said, leaning against the doorframe, blocking her exit.

“What do you want?”

“You, me, in one of the stalls.” Chad said pointing at each of his points.

Evie had to stop herself from physically gagging. “Ew, gross. No. I’m good.”

Chad didn’t seem phased by her response, but he pushed towards her, causing her to back up.

“Come on. It’ll be fun.”

“No. I’m good, seriously.”

Chad pushed her back to a wall and put his hands against the wall on either side of her, towering over the blue haired girl.

“Come on. You don’t know if you like it or not if you don’t try it.”

“No, I’m certain that I won’t like it.”

Chad just smiled.

“I do like a challenge.”

“Please, stop.”

“I also like ‘em playing hard to get.”

Chad lurched forward trying to kiss her. But Evie ducked and rolled out of the way. She ran towards the door but Chad grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

“STOP!”

“Come on! You know you want this. I mean, who can resist this face?”

“Me!”

Evie drove her knee between his legs causing the boy to scream out in pain and recoil back. Chad fell to the ground and Evie sprinted out of the restroom.

She ran over to the game and Mal smiled at her but that fell when she saw her face.

“Hey, E, what's wrong?”

Evie thought it through. She didn't know what to say. So…

“Nothing. I'm fine.” Evie said, putting on her best fake smile.

Mal gave her a look that said she didn't believe her, but let it go.

“Ok. Whatever you say. Ready to get back to the game?”

“Yeah.”

Evie was on edge for the rest of the day. She avoided Chad like the plague. She refused to tell Mal or the boys what happened, knowing them, they would probably do something that would get them kicked out. Evie didn’t want to get kicked out, this was the first place she's been that has truly felt like home. And she didn't want to risk going back to their parents, not when they finally found their freedom.

Someone tapped her on her shoulder and Evie jumped from her seat.

“Woah, I just tapped your shoulder. What's going on?” Mal asked.

“Sorry, I was just lost in thought.”

“What's going on in that beautiful brain of yours.”

Evie knew Mal was referring to how smart she was, but she blushed at the compliment.

“I was thinking how happy I finally am. I feel like I'm truly home.”

“We are and we are never going back to those people again.” Mal replied.

“Here here!” Jay shouted.

“Hell yeah!” Carlos added.

Evie started to notice a feeling. She looked around and noticed that all eyes were on them.

“Guys, keep it down. People are looking.”

The others looked around.

“I don't think that's what this is about.” Jay said.

“What do you mean? Then why are they looking at us?”

Suddenly, Chad came walking up to them. Evie mentally shrank down.

“So, you guys are runaways. I knew there was something off about you.” Chad began.

“What are you talking about?” Mal demanded.

Chad presented his phone and on it was an article of their parents talking about their kids running away.

“What-”

“The-”

“Fuck?”
