Isildur sighs in relief as well. Mairen has done everything he’d do were he in her shoes, maybe more. She was as understanding and patient as anyone could have asked of her — still, he can’t help but notice as she picks on the ring around her finger, twisting it from one side to another. There is more she wants to say, and Isildur waits until she’s finally ready to.

In a turn of events, Ontamo survived the explosion, Isildur escaped the collapse, and the two were side by side with Valandil as they embarked on the ship for their return home. Things were not the same as before, however.
Or: Ontamo has PTSD, Mairen can’t deal with it, and it’s on Isildur to help his friend pick up the pieces.
