Work Text:
alejandro has been driving by noah’s house over and over again for the past half-hour, his nerves getting the better of him. he wasn’t sure why he was, every time they broke up, noah always forgave him and took him back almost immediately. he even had flowers this time, something he usually doesn’t do. though, this one seemed more intense than usual.
it wasn’t his fault that girls constantly fawn over him, and it’s not like he doesn’t tell them that he’s taken. and he doesn’t mean to flirt back, he just gets caught up in the moment. but even so, noah still finds it in himself to get mad and cause a scene. alejandro’s naturally charismatic, it only makes sense that people can’t help but be drawn to his magnificence.
but as tiring as it was for noah to always get upset at him for something that wasn’t his fault, alejandro still loved him and didn’t want to end things. so here he was, mustering up the courage to finally walk up to his door and ring the doorbell. really, he didn’t know why he was so nervous, everything would smooth itself over in no time.
finally, the door opened, and thankfully it wasn’t one of noah’s many siblings. it was the man of the hour with red, puffy eyes that alejandro couldn’t seem to find the light that always shined in them. he’s been crying, alejandro could tell, and it was all his fault. his heart ached at the sight, but a part of him felt like noah was overreacting.
“hey, mi sol,” he said, “i got you your favorite flowers. daises, right?”
noah didn’t respond, staring at the flowers in his hands. he smiled at the gesture, but it wasn’t the warm and soft kind alejandro knew and loved.
“why are you here?” noah finally spoke, his eyes lingering on the bouquet.
alejandro blinked. “i’m- i’m here to apologize, mi amor.”
“for what?” noah looked up at him, but it didn’t feel like his eyes were on him. alejandro couldn’t place it, but he knew he didn’t like it. why was noah being so difficult in the first place anyway? he should know that he wasn’t going to leave him just because he likes to flirt here and there.
“b-because of what happened earlier today at school,” alejandro explained, knowing full well that noah knew full well, “with heather. i didn’t mean anything by it, she was simply… just there.”
“what do you mean by ‘she was just there’?” noah asked, messing around with the daisies. he plucked some petals out before smoothing them out. was something wrong with them?
more importantly, why was he asking so many questions? did it really matter that much? alejandro loved him and only him, he shouldn’t have to constantly prove that to him.
“she was just sweet-talking me, and a gentleman should never be rude to a lady, so i tried my best to push her away.”
noah arched his brow just slightly. “by sweet-talking her back?”
alejandro winced at the mention. really, was it even considered sweet-talking if he didn’t like her back? none of it was mutual, so it was practically harmless.
nonetheless, alejandro stayed civil. “it’s part of the process, chico, i’m sure you understand.”
with a gaze as cold and harsh as ice, noah glared at him, his grip on the bouquet tightening as if he were imagining them to be alejandro’s neck. a chill ran down his spine, and alejandro couldn't help but cower in place. he’s seen that scowl before many times, but never directed at him. it stung, but it felt like it was hurting noah more than it would ever hurt him.
“actually, i don’t,” noah said, his words stiff and unforgiving. he’s never looked so angry, but alejandro should know better by now to know that anger wasn’t the only thing behind those beautiful brown eyes of his. was his reflection supposed to be this vile?
“wha- what do you not understand, mi sol?-”
“you said you got me my favorite flowers,” noah interrupted, dropping them by his side.
alejandro hesitantly nodded. “y-yes. i bought them before coming here so that they would still be fresh and pretty when i gave them to you… are they not?”
noah smiled and smelled them. “yes, yes, they are.”
a sigh of relief left alejandro’s lying lips, a heavy weight being lifted off his chest. now should be around the time noah forgave him like usual. he even remembered his favorite flowers and got them for him like the good boyfriend he is. really, noah should be grateful-
“but daises aren’t my favorite flowers.”
alejandro’s heart dropped. shit, then whose were they?-
“they’re heather’s favorites,” noah answered for him, his once-tight grasp releasing the beautiful bouquet and letting it fall to the floor like it was nothing, like it meant nothing; and to noah, they truly did mean nothing to him.
“i don’t blame you for thinking that we were going to get back together again,” noah said, “we always do, so why would this time be different?”
alejandro knew what was coming, and he couldn’t bear to witness it. he begged and pleaded to not hear them, for those haunting words to not leave his mouth, to never leave his mouth-
“but i mean it this time.” noah just made his worst nightmares come true. i’m breaking up with you, and we are never getting back together.”
with his trampled heart spilled out on display, alejandro stood there, shattered and all. this couldn’t be happening, it just couldn’t.
but it was, it was happening. it was the end because his foolish self couldn't realize that it wasn’t his heart all battered and bruised; it was noah’s, and the blood was on his hands.
“goodbye, alejandro,” noah said as he began to close the door, “i… wish you the best. i’ll drop off a box of your stuff sometime this week.”
no, he couldn’t lose him, not now, not after everything. “wa- wait!”
pushing the door back, alejandro grabbed noah’s hands with all the desperation in his heart and soul. he needed him, alejandro needed him.
“wha- let go of me!-”
“please, just give me one more chance!” he begged, tears running down his face. “please, noah, mi sol, take me back, i love you!”
in a hasty moment of vulnerability, noah was able to shake alejandro’s hand off him, but he didn’t leave. he stayed, but it wasn’t going to be for long.
“alejandro”- the way his name left noah’s lips was something that could never be replicated -”do you know why i’m breaking up with you?”
he knew, he knew better than anyone. he was an asshole, he was a flirtatious bastard who didn’t cherish what he already had. but the words wouldn’t come out, he couldn’t let himself.
even now, his pride was getting the better of him. but this time, so was his guilt.
“i can’t keep watching you flirt and play with all these girls any longer,” noah cried out, tears spilling out of his beautiful eyes faster than he could cry them. “you say that you love me, but i can’t tell if you really do because you never show it. i mean, what am i supposed to believe when there’s nothing there for me to?!”
his words hurt, his words stung, his words burned, but that’s because they were true. all of it was true and always will be. alejandro was the worst, he truly was the worst.
“i’m tired of expecting change out of you only to never see it happening! i’m done wasting my time and hope for someone that won’t even bother to remember my favorite flowers!”
noah was right, alejandro didn’t know them. he raked and ransacked his mind for an answer, for something, anything. but nothing, there was nothing. alejandro didn’t know noah’s favorite flowers because he couldn’t bother to remember them.
“what.. what are they?” he felt pathetic, utterly pathetic.
“...they’re orchids,” noah answered with a sniffle, “my favorite flowers are orchids.”
alejandro nodded. he couldn’t look noah in the eyes. “i didn’t know that.”
noah sniffled again. “i know you didn’t, and that’s why we’re breaking up.”
the door began to close, and alejandro was going to let him go. he wasn’t ready, but he had to.
“wait,” he said ever-so quietly, hoping his words would reach him; and they did, they always did.
noah stopped in his tracks, but he didn’t face him. “what?”
“can i…” alejandro struggled to push the words out, but he needed to for his sake. “can i at least leave with one last piece of you, mi amor? please?”
at first, noah didn’t move, and alejandro debated on leaving. what did he even expect? for the guy whose heart he just broke to come running back to him like nothing? of course not, but even so, alejandro hoped. he loved him, but he didn’t love him right. noah deserved better, but he wouldn’t need to if alejandro just gave him what he deserved in the first place.
but then, noah turned around, slowly stepping towards alejandro. closing his eyes shut, he braced himself for a punch, a slap to the face. he asked for something, but noah was probably angry enough to disregard everything he just said. he wouldn’t blame him. but when a hand did meet his face, it was soft and kind, full of the caring love alejandro knew and had and lost.
alejandro opened his eyes to find noah staring into them. he was beautiful, truly magnificent, and he let something so wonderful slip through his fingertips. what a fool he is.
leaning in, noah kissed him, their lips fitting perfectly with one another like they always should and could have. it was gentle and perfect, it was everything alejandro could ever want and need. he was just too selfish and greedy to realize that. tears began to form, for he knew he would never find a love like this ever again.
eventually, they parted ways, and alejandro had to stop himself from reaching out and holding him tight in his arms, never letting him go.
“goodbye, alejandro,” noah said, his eyes no longer meeting his, “thanks for everything.”
the door finally closed, and alejandro just lost the best thing he’s ever had.
