Chapter Text
Mabel was drawing in her sketchbook, trying to pass the time. Christmas was tomorrow and she still didn’t know if her Great Uncles were visiting or not. It really didn’t matter if they did visit or not, she was still going to go with her plan rather than whether she saw them or not. But it would be nice to see them one last time.
“Are you going to draw all day? Are you even done preparing?” Bill asked, impatiently.
Yes, I’m done preparing. I am going to draw for the rest of the day because I have nothing else to do. Mabel responded annoyed. Bill had been bothering her the past week now asking if she was done preparing.
“That's great!” He responded happily, “Do you need to know any other information before you leave?”
Uh yeah I do. I need to know the locations to get each object. She responded. She smiled slightly at his happy attitude.
“Oh, I, uh, Don’t really know where to find each object but I can try and get an approximate location for you. Just talk to me tonight in the dreamscape and I’ll tell you then.”
Okay see you then. Mabel responded before going back to drawing. She did actually plan on drawing for the rest of the day. She had nothing else to do. She was done planning and packing up whatever stuff she could take with her. She couldn’t take much with her because she will be legally dead, but she could take a few things people won’t notice missing.
But for now she was just drawing to pass the time. And she was enjoying drawing too. She was doing a sketch of the phone and trying to memorize the internals and all of it before she left. But she was also just having fun drawing too.
“Mabel! Get down here!” Her mother yelled from downstairs.
Mabel got up with a sigh and headed downstairs. She had no idea what her mother wanted her for and she really didn’t care to find out. From the way she yelled her mother sounded angry. So she quietly made her way downstairs. Downstairs her mother stood in the middle of the living room. The mess of the living room was still there like always, bottles and trash littered around the room.
“Mabel, can you explain to me why I just got a call from your Great Uncle telling me that they are going to be coming up for Christmas tomorrow and that you should have known about this? And you were supposed to tell me that they were going to be coming up?” Her mom yelled.
Mabel didn’t know how to respond. She didn’t doubt that they probably sent her an email telling her that they were going to be visiting and tell her mother that. Just the thing was she really hasn’t been checking her email. She has been so busy with planning and working that it just kinda slipped her mind.
“Oh, uh sorry about that.” She responded sheepishly. She really couldn’t defend her actions here and her mother wouldn’t care to hear her defend herself so she just said sorry.
“You better be sorry” Her mother snapped, “God look at this place, it's a mess and apparently we have guests coming over tomorrow so someone has to get the place cleaned.”
Mabel looked around. Yeah her mother was right, this place was a big mess.
“Look I do everything around here, it's your turn to step up and actually help, Mabel. So because you didn't tell me that they were going to be coming over, you're going to have to clean the house up.” Her mother said harshly.
“Okay.” Mabel said softly before going over and grabbing a trash bag and starting to pick up the trash around the room. It's not like she could disagree with her mom, she was her mother and she did what she said. Plus it would start a way too big of an argument if she said anything back.
“I have a job interview I must be getting too, when I get back the house better be spotless.” Her mother said while slamming the door and walking out.
Mabel just sighed and continued to clean. She hated her mother. She hated how she said that she did everything around the house when the only thing she did was drink and watch TV. She did buy the food in the house but it wasn't even good food. It was just boxed Mac and cheese and ramen. Which she got sick of fast.
Also her mom didn't even wash any of her clothes. She had to wash her own clothes any more and it sucked because it took away from her time of working.
“Why don't you just kill your mother if you hate her so much?” Bill asked.
What?! No?! I hate her but I don't hate her that much! Mabel exclaimed Why would it be normal for me to do that?
“I dunno it just sounded fun, you know?”
No Bill, I don't know. She said with a huff and continued to clean.
“Okay says the one that is cleaning up old beer bottles and old take out boxes.”
Mabel just sighed. Yeah no what she was doing was sad. But it was whatever, she would just have to suck it up and deal with it. She didn't care that if she didn't do it she would get yelled at. She just didn't want her Great Uncles to see her house like this. If they did it might stop her plan. And she can't let that happen.
After a few hours she got most of the house cleaned up. Yes some of it was still bad, like her mothers bedroom and stuff but she didn't care to clean it. It took three trash bags to clean the house and she was tired.
The only thing left she had to clean was the kitchen and it really wasn't that bad in there so she wasn't dreading it that much. It was getting late though, it was nearing 7pm and her mother wasn't home yet. Her mother left the house around 11am.
And then the front door opened and her mother came stumbling in. Speak of the devil. Here's her mother.
Mabel could tell her mother wasn't at the job interview the entire time. With the way she was stumbling she was probably out drinking again, like she did after every job interview. There was also a bottle in her hand, showing that she was in fact drinking. How did her mother even drive home safely?
“Hey Mabel, looks like you are cleaning well. I'm glad you are, you are going to need practice with being a housewife because that's all you are going to end up being.” Her mother said with a smile. Did her mom mean that as a complaint? “You're going to be a housewife just like me. I would say I'm fine with that but I'm not. At least I can depend on your brother making it somewhere.”
The words hurt Mabel but she knew that she should take it with a grain of salt and move on. She could dwell on it later. For now she just sighed and walked off to go put the last of the trash in the trash can. She put the stuff in the trash can and headed upstairs to go to bed.
“Mabel one last thing.” Her mother called out. Mabel turned around to face her. “Please don't tell your brother about me drinking, I don't want him thinking badly about me.” Her mother said softly.
“Okay, I won't.” Mabel said while turning around and walking up the stairs. She didn't plan on telling her brother anything about what happened. She didn't before, why would she do it now? She was just going to act nicely to her family for her last day with them. For how she was leaving them she didn't want them to blame themselves.
With that she sighed and laid down on her bed. Not excited to deal with tomorrow.
Mabel opened her eyes and saw the white of the dreamscape. She sighed and walked over to her chair, facing Bill who was already in his chair. She just had a long day and didn't want to deal with Bill's mess right now so she hoped that he actually figured out the spots of where all the items were.
“Hey Polaris, I know you had a long day” Bill paused for dramatic effect, “So good news is I found out the relative location of how to get each object!” He said proudly.
“Wait really?” Mabel asked, excitedly.
“Yes, wait I even made a map to show you where each thing is.” When he said that a map of the United States appeared out of seemingly nowhere. “Okay so I can tell you where to get each item, relatively. Okay so in Maine, in one of the forests there you can get the eye rose seeds which you need to grow in a hot state and they take a long time to grow so I suggest doing that last. But the flower does forever bloom so you can really mess it up that badly.”
“Okay next item is Pearl of the sun and you are going to have to build something to get that because you have to get it when a solar eclipse happens but we will cross that bridge when we need to. Lastly the ectoplasm, you can get that in any haunted place but it is difficult to get. With that item we will also have to cross that bridge when we get there.” Bill finally finished talking after a long time.
Mabel just smiled. She was happy things were going correctly and now she had more of a solid plan going. Everything was finally looking up for her.
