Summary:

“And what about you?”

That question made the white-haired turn his gaze, he looked straight into Yamato’s eyes, as if staring into his soul. He looked so much more prettier when he was vulnerable like this, with flushed skin and a look in his eyes that seemed so innocent that it could almost make his heart burst into confetti.

“I’m way happier than I ever thought I could be… I wanted to run away from life after that. My dad kinda made me feel like it was the end of the world. But I guess I just found something that was worth rooting myself down for.”

Notes:

hi again, thanks for stopping by this attempted mess of a fic. it feels a bit rusty cuz i havent written them in a while, but i tried my best. hope u enjoy

Work Text:

When Yaotome Gaku decided that he was going to turn into a completely different direction than his father’s actual business in the entertainment industry, little did anyone expect that his other alternative would be to be teaching.

And with that, he could also justify it by claiming that even he did not expect to end up with the grouping of elementary school kids.

Which was why, when he did pull out the offer letter as he faced the principal of the school, he raised an eyebrow after removing his glasses. It was a bright, sunny day at the peak of May, and the sunrays didn’t burn too hard, seemingly as the skies just turned orange as they made their way to the office he had been seated at. Eyes currently glued to a piece of paper that seemed more important than his own life right now.

“Is this some sort of a prank?”

Takanashi Otoharu chuckled as he faced him behind the seat. “Not at all. The offer still stands, even when I know you applied for something else completely.”

“... It’s an honor, sir…” Gaku hesitated, but still held his gaze as steady and strong as ever. “But, I don’t think assigning a beginner to teach music to children from ages 5 to 10 could even be something which could get anyone’s interest.” Mine at least.

“Yaotome-kun, in my school I encourage everyone to be as creative as they’d like to be,” The older man went on, “I imagine you too would have done something differently, had not your circumstances been different.”

The white-haired young man tapped a finger as he glanced at the contract. It was everything he currently, kind of, wanted. An escape from what had been haunting him, a new start, and it gave him a chance to get in touch with his creative side after being denied of it for far too long.

What did he have to lose?

“...Why me? …This late in the year… And Can’t it be a bit of a more mature audience?”

“You’d like me to say your dad had a say into this, don’t you?” Otoharu hummed, still glancing at Gaku who seemed to be reluctant to fully accept the role that he himself was hand picked for.

“Take it as a learning experience, for the upcoming semester I mean. Plus, I think being around kids would be more refreshing for you. Why not take a whack at it since this is something completely new anyways?”

Gaku knew he’d been defeated in the latter note, but he still had to try and dig in a bit more info. “... It does seem to be too good of a coincidence… Especially seeing to what happened–”

“What happened between you and my daughter is all in the past,” The principal replied swiftly, “And I believe you need to cut yourself some slack.”

The dashing young man only let out a laugh, even if he was the one who had been trying out his luck by dropping his resume here and there, and seemingly his luck did land in the rightful path after all. “Says the person who gave me the hardest time when I needed the push?”

“Which is why I’m trying to make it up to you now!” The older between the two finally stood up, going around the table as he patted the younger man in front of him. “I’m even willingly going to give you a tour.”

“You really don’t have to…”

“Please don’t make me beg,” Otoharu opened the door to urge Gaku to get a bit excited. “For my sake?”

The white-haired held back a smirk to his seemingly potential future boss. “Now you’re really starting to sound like my mom, actually.”

“Completely unintentional,” They walked together, and the white-haired was given a file as a light breeze made its way to their atmosphere. “You will be assigned homeroom to a class of students to class 22-B of the 6th grade, as a substitute ‘til you’re ready of course.”

Gaku’s eyes trailed off to kids playing football in the courtyard, just as he glanced back at the pages of the file he’d just taken. “And would the class I’ll be teaching be considered as an elective?”

“Yes to those who are taking sciences, no to the ones who are actually pursuing arts and music.”

The white-haired stared at the middle aged man in front of him.

“You’re going to allow them to audition?”

“And prep them for it–”

Just as the man was able to grab the potential music teacher’s attention, he got bumped into by a very petite little girl who seemingly had the fluffiest of tulipas.

Oops. The impact seemed to be painful, and he almost panicked when he saw her tear up. When she seemed like she’d lose her balance, Gaku immediately caught her in his arms, and realized she was almost as light as feathers. “Woah, take it easy kiddo.”

She rubbed her nose and looked up at his face, seemingly still dazed from the sudden bump.

“Are you hurt? Do you want me to take you to the nurse’s office–”

“Yume-chan, you’re gonna need to talk to us if you want us to help you, okay?” Otoharu smiled kindly, and when Gaku’s gaze landed on her he saw her nodding profusely.

“I’m fine–”

The white-haired held out a book she’d dropped to her, and it had already caught his attention seeing it was a book about instruments.

“You seem to have dropped this.”

“Oh,” Gaku had to bite back a laugh at how bubbly this girl was. “Shit, thanks. My dad was going to kill me–”

“Language–”

“Sorry!”

He laughed again, “Do you like playing?”

“Heck yeah! This is the reason I kinda begged and begged to get the book to convince him to get me a personal teacher…”

“Actually… Don’t you have art club right now, Yume-chan?”

“Shit!” Yume only cursed again as she hastily made her way to where she needed to be, “Gotta go! It was really nice meeting you!”

Gaku only met Otoharu’s gaze when the girl was no longer visible.

“Was that enough to convince you to join the faculty team? Mind you, she’s one of the many who you’ll meet who are as bright as this.”

*

The white-haired let out a sigh of relief when he was met with the location of the bar his friend Ryuu told him to meet him at, finally. “You can stop here. Thanks and sorry.”

Thank goodness the whole night had not been wasted in this way.

At least the driver didn’t outright cuss out on him as he paid for the ride. Gaku was thankful his first night of exploring in the city did not end up in complete shambles, since he refused to ask any of his friends’ help or take a lift offered by any one of them.

“You’re finally here!” He let a hand run over his hair, seemingly embarrassed. “I was this close to asking you to send your location–”

“You worry too much, Ryuu,” Gaku chuckled, “Are all your friends here already?”

The brunet nodded as he led the way into the bar, semi-loud music filling up their ears. “And they started drinking without you.”

“Guess I had that coming,” His friend smiled back as they made a stop to a table where it looked like a half-private room rented for them, kind of similar to a karaoke room.

“How was the interview?”

“Actually, I got handed the job. And I think I’m gonna say yes,”

“That’s exactly what you’d probably need!” Ryuu exclaimed happily, “I know your mom and her side of the family would be happy.”

Gaku chuckled, “Yeah, as extra hand in the kitchen–”

“I thought you enjoyed doing that?”

“Of course, but there’s no harm admitting that either,” The white-haired called out, “Who’s who again?”

“We’ve played with them poker online a couple of times,” Ryuu called out, pointing to another brunet with slightly wavy hair. “You remember Izumi Mitsuki and Osaka Sougo right? They’re by the bar over there. Oh, that raven-haired Mitsuki-kun's brother with Yotsuba Tamaki…”

Gaku acknowledged them with a wave as Ryuu went on, and they seemed to notice him arriving and waved back. Of course, it was going to take some time until he recalled who each and every person at the party was. He tried to keep his attention intact as his friend kept on telling him who every person there was, but soon his eyes, however, fell over a duo who started chugging on their beer and kept going at it like there was no tomorrow.

“That’s Midou Torao, chugging alongside Nikaidou Yamato. They live in the same city as us, the rest are traveling here for a couple of nights.” His friend told him when he noticed that Gaku’s eyes lingered there, “It’s usually a part of one of our fun games around here. Maybe you’d wanna join?”

His immediate reaction was to pout, “You know I barely know anyone here…”

“I give up!” Midou groaned, almost looking like he’d been holding himself back from throwing up. “Maybe you need a new challenger, you alcoholic.”

The green-haired chuckled, who still poured in some more beer as he cheekily grinned back at his friend.

“A deal’s a deal, Midou. Now, keep your promise!”

And before Gaku could even ask what was happening, The brunet, referred to as Midou, approached them, or should he say, Ryuu and quickly left a peck at his cheek.

“... Sorry, Ryuunosuke… H-he made me!”

The white-haired’s jaw almost dropped to the floor immediately when he’d heard who he assumed was Nikaidou’s laughter filling the room. Good thing it didn’t look like his friend minded it at all, actually.

“It-it’s okay!” Gaku pursed his lips, trying to cover his laughter just as his eyes met the other man who looked like he was two minutes away from rolling over with tears in his eyes. “Yamato-kun, don’t you think that’s enough for a day?!”

“Nope,” His gaze was still on the white-haired, “Wanna go for a round, newbie?”

That was when Gaku realized he’d been referred to and pointed at himself, which made Nikaidou chuckle and nod again before he finally decided to sit at the table. Thankfully, he had been looking for an opening to kind of tear himself away from the two brunettes who Nikaiodu seemed to have caused a not totally un-welcomed dilemma.

“...You totally did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

“Trust me, you’d do the same if you’d seen how they act around one another all day.” The bespectacled man replied, pushing a mug of beer towards Gaku.

“Are you usually like this sober too?”

“If you wanna talk more, show me what you’re made of first!”

And that’s how the chugging rounds started. All the nervousness started to leave The white-haired head, just as he kept drinking and feeling himself loosen up around the other man just as all of Ryuu’s peeps finally gathered nearby the table, chanting as they hyped up the party with their 4th round at it.

“Okay, okay!” Nikaidou’s words slurred, nudging Gaku. “As fun as this has been, I’mma need to leave soon. Why’d you even come this late?”

Gaku pouted, “But we didn’t even make a deal yet!”

“You should hold him up to that promise, Yaotome,” Midou snickered, making his way to help Nikaidou out. “We’ll call it a night guys. I’ll drop him off in a cab.”

“One last round? So you could keep that promise since we’re tied?”

A chuckle escaped the green-haired before he held his hand up to his other friend, facing the white-haired one more time that night.

“You’re on.”

*

Just as he blinked at the papers in front of him while he waited for his students to settle in, Gaku squinted and groaned as he still felt a dull headache at the back of his head. He probably over did it last night, seemingly forgetting he had an early morning and a long day ahead since extra curricular activities were a part of the new job package deal.

Not that he didn't have fun, of course he did. He even planned on checking his phone later to see if Ryuu had managed to share contacts of everyone who he’d met yesterday and probably make other plans sometime in the future. Especially after having such a blast in that chugging competition with that Nikaidou guy.

“...Right, so I’ll be calling out each of your names so I can evaluate your skills and see how we can work on developing further.”

He had not expected that much of a turn up, but was slightly delighted that people showed passion for music and was thankful that he could be able to build up a life for him here starting with this change of career.

Honestly, as the lesson went on, he realized that he had loved being able to share his knowledge. Knowing that there would be a bright, young generation able to show off their talents somewhat made his heart warmer. Time flew by as it was almost 4:30 PM and he needed to send them off soon.

“Okay, I got all of your names registered in the system already. There will be a competition in about a month’s time, if I do see your names being worthy I’d definitely sign you up. And if you don’t have any questions–”

“Wait!”

Gaku was pleasantly surprised when he saw the girl from yesterday standing at the class door frame, holding her chest as she tried to catch her breath. What caught his eyes the most was the ukulele case she’d come with as she held it close to her petite form.

He bit back a smile, trying to seem serious as he lowered his glasses. “... You’re late…”

“But you’re still here,” She went on, clutching at her bag with her brows furrowed in determination. “Please, sensei! Let me play you something! If you still decide to reject me from class ‘cuz of my attendance, then I promise I won’t hold a grudge.”

Gaku kept his gaze on her. Of course he was impressed with her stubbornness, and could see bits of himself in her. Not that he was going to be this openly biased when he still had other students present in class.

“Class dismissed,” He eyed the door until everyone left and turned his gaze back to the girl. “You’re going to get a penalty even if I let you in this class. Are you sure you’re up for it?”

She nodded, fixing her bangs. “A 101%. I’ve never backed out of something I really want to do. I’m not about to start now.”

The white-haired finally smiled, “Sit then. Do you want me to go through any basics first?”

The girl shook her head, sitting down in front of Gaku. “Please evaluate my abilities the same as everyone else in class.”

“Fair enough, but you will be cleaning up the storage with me as your punishment. Deal?”

He wanted to see if she was going to refuse, seeming as it was a Friday and everyone was automatically in ‘weekend mode’.

He almost laughed when he saw the kid in front of him huff like she’d lived a billion lifetimes before him. “Fine… Would it be okay if I made a call?”

Gaku looked back at his desk. “By all means, I’m just going to go through a couple of papers ‘til you’re done.”

“I’m Yume, by the way.”

He glanced at her last name before nodding, “Yaotome Gaku. Please don’t forget to note your details down right after we finish this session.”

*

“Two bowls of Kake Soba for table 8!” Gaku called out, just as he slipped off a note to the kitchen. He could swear that he loved Soba and to be included in its making with all his heart, but it was absolute hell at times when he had to wait on tables during rush hour on a Friday Night.

“Gaku, you doing okay, honey? Don’t push yourself too much. I know you were working this morning.”

He smiled, “I’m fine, Ma… I’ll take a break when things calm down. Glad business is blooming for you though.”

His mother smiled back, slipping back into the kitchen, “I’ll check on your grandfather, see you at the back after a while.”

The white-haired waved playfully, taking a deep breath as he went out on the floor to manage the kitchen staff equally so their flow stays intact for the night. Not like school’s work load was any better, either. But it kept him busy, so he swallowed all his complaints and proceeded to greet the customers walking in. He couldn’t believe he said yes to staying extra at school for a complete stranger, but at least it was fun.

“How old are you again?”

“I’m turning 7 this June.” Yume then smiled mischievously before asking, “And how old is Yaotome-san? Is he as old as a ghost?”

Gaku nudged her playfully. The both stayed true to their deal as they cleaned the storage room that looked like it was a part of a haunted castle that remained untouched. “Very funny, I’ll have you know I’m only 32!”

“Oh, you’re the same age as pops too!”

He hummed in acknowledgement as he dusted the area a little bit. “You’re pretty good for your age, Nikaidou. Who taught you in the first place?”

Yume smiled, pushing the stuff on the dusty shelves as she handed Gaku the extra books. “Actually, my grandfather used to play for me when I was little. Then, I annoyed my dad until he gave up and actually bought me beginner instruments!”

“... It’s kinda uncanny how much you remind me of myself, actually.”

“Hmm? You were also like that at my age?”

“Probably less louder than you,” Gaku laughed when he saw Yume’s green eyes narrow at him. “Not that it’s a bad thing. My dad was kinda insane.”

“Don’t worry, my dad is also kinda insane. Guess we’re kinda clones in different forms, huh?”

“...That doesn’t make any sense!”

And somehow, as he thought of that strange little kid he ended up at the front of the store, looking at his notepad whilst he noted down the orders for pick up.

“Good evening, sorry for the wait. Welcome to Yamamura Soba. I’m Gaku and I’ll be your server for tonight–”

A hesitant yet familiar voice he had not heard in a while reached his ears, “... No way–”

With another voice accompanied, “... Yaotome-sensei?”

Just as he looked up, he was faced with both Nikaidou and his persistent student which he’d spent time with hours ago. And for once, he could confirm that all three of them felt the same amount of shock at that given moment.

“... You’re the one who kept me waiting on my kid, huh?” Nikaidou chuckled, looking down at Yume. “Sweetie, he’s also Tsunashi-san’s close friend.”

“Wait, dad, you already know each other?”

“W-we went out drinking a few nights ago… To think you’re actually his kid…” Gaku finally found his voice, only to rub his head awkwardly for not making the association when he saw them side by side. “What are you doing here?”

“And he won too. Just in case you wanna lecture your dad on how much he drinks, you got your own sensei on the same boat.”

Yume glared at her dad, before turning to the other adult in front of her. “No, sensei. What are you doing here?” Raising an eyebrow.

“My family owns this place. I help out occasionally.” The white-haired replied, eyes shifting to her father. “... Again, I would have never guessed that you’d have a family.”

“Rude, does Onii-san look that reckless to you?” The bespectacled man laughed, “We’ll just have two bowls of Oroshi soba to go, please.”

“And one ochazuke!” The little girl added, “Sometimes you get too nauseous to eat anything else ‘cause of the beer.”

“Yeah, yeah, thanks for looking out for me, my little gremlin.”

Yamato bent down, patting his little girl’s head as he left a peck on the top of her head. Gaku smiled at the sight before nodding.

“Anything else? And why not choose to dine-in instead? I could sneak you both in despite the rush.”

Yume laughed, her eyes sparkling. “It’s been a thing between us to take the bowls and sit by the beach while eating.”

“Yume…”

“What, dad? He’s not a complete stranger. This is the most I have seen you talk to people aside from your social circle.”

Gaku had to bite back his laughter again as Yamato rolled his eyes.

“That’s all for tonight, thanks. How much will it be?”

Just as Gaku started calculating the amount inside his head, the sight of them seemed to tug on his heartstrings more than he’d like to admit. Maybe there was something else in the air, he didn’t know. But it made him feel all the more sentimental.

“...It’s on the house. Don’t worry.”

Yamato clicked his tongue, “...Yaotome, c’mon.”

“I swear, it’s the least I could do after ruining your night–”

“But that was my fault!” Yume tried to ease up the mood, “Why not join us for the night?”

Both adults stared at the younger girl present in their conversation.

“I wouldn’t want to intrude… Next time, alright? Kinda busy here.”

As disappointed as the younger girl was, she nodded as she turned to her dad, who looked into his phone before facing the man again.

“Now I’ll be holding you up on that offer, what will you be doing tomorrow?”

Somehow, they ended up deciding on having Gaku visit the Nikaidou household while carrying a bag filled with DVDs of disney movies.

He chuckled as he kept texting his newly found-friend back, deciding to walk since it was nightfall already and wanted to enjoy the summer calmness as the sun went down with a slight breeze engulfing his form.

Yamato: Please let me know if you got lost on your way.

Yamato: I forgot to tell you. Midou will be joining, you don’t mind right?

Gaku: Not at all.

Gaku: Had I known I’d have asked Ryuu to join too

Yamato: Lol that would have been distracting him from his bestie time with Yume

Yamato: They’re inseparable actually

[Yamato sent an attachment]

Gaku’s gaze softened as he opened a picture with who seemed to be Yume, in Midou’s arms while Yamato’s on the other side of the picture handing her over. She seemed to be no less than a few hours old.

Gaku: <3 love this

Gaku: Even Midou looks like he bursted to tears

Yamato: He actually did lmao

Yamato: Don’t tell him I told you that

Just as he was about to reply, he looked up to find Yamato at his doorstep, waiting for him with a smile.

“When’s her birthday actually?”

“22nd of June,” Yamato replied, closing the door behind him as he gave Gaku room to remove his shoes. “Lemme know if you wanna go for a tour later.”

The house from where Gaku stood looked pretty simple. It had plain, simple decorations placed where furniture were placed, and the wallpaper color was neutral, as if they’d recently just moved in to this place but he didn’t want to butt in too soon and ask.

Oh, and the atmosphere carried a mixture of lemon and lavender smell combined.

The white-haired raised an eyebrow, as his eyes fell on the other man. “And why not now?”

“I’m lazy and Yume’s too preoccupied with your disney collection,” The green-haired shrugged, opening the door to the living room.

“... Old man,”

“We’re literally the same age!”

When he was met by the other two, he noted how that room also seemed empty with only a few three sets of sofa, facing the TV with a rack of DVDs which looked like Yume took liberty of decorating, since she was also interested in arts. Gaku noted that by seeing the stars makeshift on each category separated.

She was next to Midou as it looked like they were going through a manga together, but met Gaku with a bright smile when she spotted him.

“You’re finally here!”

Midou nodded at him, “Good to see you again,”

“You too,” Gaku also sat down on the floor next to her, showcasing his collection. “Here, knock yourself out.”

“Actually we normally pick out three things and vote,” The brunet explained, “We pick out three DVDs and decide which to watch amongst them.”

Yamato reached out to a can of beer on the coffee table, sitting on his armchair and cracking it open. “When the night’s young, gremlin.”

Yume frowned, “You need to pick out something too, dad! I also think Yaotome-san should have a say since it’s his first time spending the night here.”

The white-haired hummed, appreciating that his student is this caring when it comes to his opinions even outside of school. “Then, Beauty and the Beast it is.”

“... I’m picking out Lilo and Stitch then,” Midou concluded, putting it up as an option.”

“Really, Torao-nii? I was expecting something like cars again since that’s your go to.”

“Maybe your Torao-nii finally developed a sense of style–”

“I’ll have you know that it was a hit back in the day!”

Yamato chuckled, eyeing Gaku for a bit as he took a sip of beer. “Didn’t think you’d be into a fairy tale that romantic, Yaotome.”

“Me neither,”

“What’s not to like? I think Belle is also really pretty.”

“She is, isn’t she?” Yume smiled, putting her pick on the coffee table. “I picked out Brave for tonight.”

The only person remaining was Yamato, and he was still asking Midou to show him whatever DVD Gaku had brought just as he and Yume got distracted with the snacks on the table.

“... Fox and the hound.”

Everyone in the room stared at him.

“I’m sorry, but did I hear you correctly?”

“Dad! Why…” Yume groaned, before her father simply grinned as he continued drinking.

“What’s not to love? A friendship doomed to exist,” Yamato kissed the air, “Classic go to.”

Gaku felt something inside his stomach tugging, before really eyeing him. “You do know that if we choose the other three, your choice automatically is the first to get rejected?”

“Then at least I’d have picked something,” The bespectacled man explained, before turning towards his daughter who seemed to have already been shuffling the choices of papers so they could proceed before it’s past her bedtime.

“... Thank goodness it’s not Fox and the Hound,” Yume exhaled, holding up a paper. “Beauty and the Beast it is. Looks like luck is on your side, Yaotome-sensei.”

Midou laughed, dialing something on his phone. “Oh yeah, I’m gonna place the order for pizza. All in favor since you had soba yesterday?”

The white-haired almost pouted, but couldn’t help but respond. “Soba is meant to be eaten at any time, any day!”

“Careful there, Midou. You’ll anger an enthusiast.”

Yume chuckled, pressing on play before she faced Gaku. “Maybe you could show us how to make it from scratch one day, sensei.”

Gaku nodded before turning to Yamato, “Nikaidou, you’ll strain your neck if you plan on sitting like that the whole night.”

Surprisingly, he does get up to sit next to them on the sofa in the middle without any protest, eyes not leaving the screen as they watched the commercials.

“Ah, we forgot to get the dip.”

“I’ll help, Tora-nii.”

And just as Gaku was left alone with Yamato, he reached out for a beer as they enjoyed the silence accompanied with the noises coming from the TV.

“...Thanks by the way,”

The white-haired raised an eyebrow. “What for?”

“For letting my daughter get a chance in this music competition thing,” Yamato chuckled, “She told me she got late. You could have been a dick about it… But you stayed just because she asked you to.”

“... So you didn’t mind the punishment?”

“Of course not,” The green-haired murmured. “She’d been getting special treatment unconsciously, due to our circumstances. It’s refreshing to see someone treat her like a normal kid for once.”

And before Gaku could ask further, the bestie-duo came back and their conversation was halted for the night. A part of him wondered if it was genuine or if the alcohol had had the man talking, but decided to indulge with the current escapism presented as the opening credits to his favorite fairy-tale came on.

*

Gaku walked around campus, taking in the beauty it had to offer as he tested one of the old cameras he unboxed this morning before coming to school. He kept taking random shots of nature, slightly relieved that he had not lost his touch yet.

He just finished teaching class, and it was a great breather. He forgot how much this used to be therapeutic when he was going through his parents’ separation. And just when he was trying out taking pictures at different angles, he spotted Yume sitting near a tree with her books all around her.

How many clubs is this girl even a part of? Gaku made a mental note to double check on that, before snapping a picture on whim and immediately sending it to Yamato.

“Sensei?” His student squinted, the sunrays didn’t help in making it easier to spot. He made his way toward her with a smile.

“Hi there,” The white-haired nodded, “Do you remember to take breaks?”

She chuckled as she organized her drawings, “I guess. Though, I was going to come to you either way to ask if we could practice again.”

“We can, we can probably try out having you play without having any chord books nearby this time around.”

Yume hummed, “Would that be enough for me to prepare for that upcoming musical?”

Gaku remained silent for a while, eyeing his student apologetically who laughed at his reaction.

“You don’t need to hold back, you know?”

“I’m debating whether your dad would kill me for breaking his little princess’ heart, actually.”

The girl smiled softly at the mention of him before turning her gaze back to Gaku. “He could, but he wouldn’t.”

“Really? Why not?”

Yume hesitated before opening her ukulele case, mumbling, “... I haven’t seen him this comfortable around someone new…”

“And here I thought I was intruding.”

The girl next to him frowned, “I will actually get upset if you say that again. Even Tora-nii seemed happy about it, you know.”

That somehow, sort of, made Gaku happy. Not that either of them didn’t have friends, it’s just that with Yamato, or at least with the amount of time they’d spent together he always felt a comforting sort of freedom. Like, it was okay for him to be who he was. Even when he’d left everything behind, just to abandon that feeling of sentiment.

Yet fate decided to go otherwise, and that had been his push for asking that man’s daughter the very question he’d had the first time she walked into his class.

“...Why is this that important to you?”

“Guess I wanna make dad proud,” Yume pondered, tilting her head as her fingers adjusted the strings. “He gave up a lot for me, ever since it was just the two of us. He’s also always trying his hardest to earn more to make my life easier. I want to give him something back in his name.”

That explained where her coping mechanism pattern came from, “Pretty sure you being his daughter is more than enough for him.”

“...You’re sweet,” The girl chuckled, but then turned serious. “No, sensei. I really want to at least have my chance to play in front of a crowd… Maybe I want to do it for myself too.”

“Then maybe we can start having extra lessons for that?”

*

Yume exhaled loudly as Gaku tapped at the paper in his hand. They kept at it until the sun was no longer visible from the window where he’d been seated at the Nikaidou residence.

“Instead of going on a higher note, just try going mid and connecting it.” He ushered for her to give him the instrument so he could show her what he meant, as he put his guitar down. “See?”

It was the same moment where the front door swung open to reveal a very exhausted looking Yamato walking in and making a double take when he saw Gaku there.

“... When you told me you’d hire him on the side, I didn't expect it to be this soon.” He chuckled as he made his way towards his kid, leaving a kiss on her forehead.

“You’re back sooner than expected, how was the class?”

“It was okay, you know we’re finishing the course soon.”

Gaku tilted his head, “You’re also studying?”

Yume nodded, “Masters. Also, Dad, the competition is only about three weeks away, so we gotta try and give it our all if I hope to even see the light of the stage.”

The white-haired was the one to respond before the other man in the room could open his mouth, “You won’t need to worry about it. Just believe in yourself, at the entry level it shouldn’t be that difficult.”

“...Looks like you stole the words right out of my mouth, are you actually trying to steal my kid?”

“...Dad.”

That statement was enough to drive Gaku speechless until he’d heard mischievous chuckles coming from the man who’d seemingly been presumed to actually be his age.

“You’re an ass, Nikaidou–” Gaku spurted out, before realizing he would need to hold back in front of his student but she was also chuckling along.

“Yaotome-san–”

“Call me Gaku.”

“Only if you promise to call me Yume too,” Yume lowered her gaze when she saw a sort of agreement from Gaku, fixing her strings. “Dad said you’re the same age but you keep on making him act way younger somehow!”

“... Yume don’t sell me out like that,” Yamato murmured, before taking the liberty to wear an apron. “Since you’re here, we’re gonna need to pamper you for the night.”

Gaku looked up at Yamato, noticing how tired he looked despite trying to hold it together for his kid. “You really don’t have to. I could always call the restaurant and have them deliver. Or I could leave and you two could–”

The green-haired raised an eyebrow, “You scared I’ll give you food poisoning or something?”

“What? No!”

“Then stay, Gaku-san.” The younger girl started playing again before continuing, “It may not look like it, but his food is actually yummy.”

That made Yamato chuckle, as he shuffled his way to the kitchen. “Don’t I have the best kid in the world?”

Gaku also stood up, “Would you like for me to help you then?”

“I’m paying you to teach my daughter, not to be my personal assistant,” A nonchalant reply came, before Yamato grinned at Gaku when he spotted his face from where he stood. “Or would you rather I hire you for that on the spot?”

“Yume, break for 5 minutes.” The white-haired announced, as he made his way closer to the other man, and he made sure to keep enough distance so that this conversation remained with the other two men since that was what he wanted in the first place anyway.

“Okay, you’ve lost me there.” Gaku raised his eyebrows.

“What on earth do you mean?”

“I mean you don’t need to be this nice to me, I’m only doing my job–”

Yamato shushed him before dragging Gaku into the dimly lit kitchen and closing the door, carrying an expression without much emotion.

“In case you didn’t notice, it’s just me and her here… I guess, I just want to show my thanks for not treating her the same way everyone does… Cause of… You know.”

Ah, there it was. There was the topic in which Gaku dreaded ever bringing up, because the way that girl’s father’s complete demeanor changed in expressing his thoughts on not having a mother present made it seem like the darkest clouds just had sucked everything out of Nikaidou Yamato and he was dragged into an endless pit of abyss.

“... I was a child of divorce.”

The bespectacled man eyed him, they shared a moment of silence before he opened his mouth again. At that moment, it did seem like there was more than what meets the eye, and it kind of looked like Yamato appreciated that Gaku had not questioned him about the missing family member who should have been there present with them, but wasn’t.

“...You really don’t have to tell me–”

“I know I don’t,” Gaku went on, not breaking his gaze away from Yamato’s face that seemed to be trying to distract himself away from the topic that he himself had opened up. “But, I want you to know because you and her both helped me get out of a couple of dilemmas. One of them being financial.”

The green-haired laughed as he washed the vegetables in the sink.

“Well, there’s more to what that came from.”

Gaku leaned against the counter, watching Yamato work on preparing the ingredients.

“Thanks, for trusting me with this.”

Yamato hummed, gazing up at the other man present with him in the kitchen, “That barely scrapes the surface of the story, you know.”

“I know, but you don’t look like you’re ready to talk about it. So, for now, let’s keep at making Yume happy in any way we can.”

“Now I’m having second thoughts reaffirming that you wanna steal her away–”

Finally, Gaku let out a chuckle as well. “I cannot believe someone like you has a kid.”

“You keep on repeating that. I can’t believe someone like you isn’t married yet, either.” Yamato bit back playfully, “You’re my age for God’s sake. What are you waiting for?”

“That’s a story for another day,” Gaku replied, making his way back to the door of the living room. “Who knows, maybe this year’s birthday wish in two months time will change stuff for me.”

“Oh, you’re born in August? Both you and Yume are both summer babies.” There was a shit-eating grin plastered on Yamato’s face, “I’m older than you by 6 months. No wonder you’re taking it slow–”

“Stop that, you geezer!” Gaku chuckled again, even if he was pissed and looked like he was ready to throw hands with his student's father. “We both know you find that charming–”

And finally, the youngest one in the house spoke up, holding back a groan that was audible for the both of them.

“Can you both hold off a bit of the flirting, now I’m embarrassed.”

Silence, before Gaku eyed her and Yamato’s head came out of the kitchen. And for once, without even looking up he knew both of them had their cheeks flushed from the way the younger girl in front of him had a playful look plastered on her face.

“W-We’re not?”

“Yume, did your sensei give you too much workload that your brain’s damaged?”

*

After that night at the Nikaidous’ household, his lessons both at the school and Yume had kept him too occupied to think of anything else. As did the shifts he needed to cover at his family’s soba store. But, he did feel like there was some sort of breakthrough because after that, he and Yamato kept texting each other more frequently back and forth, even if it were sharing something as simple as memes.

Tonight was important, and he made sure to share the ticket details so Yamato would be able to attend Yume’s first performance ever since the extra lessons. Gaku was fondling his phone, trying to keep his emotions intact even though he was not even the one to walk and perform on stage.

His ears were met by a whistle, “... So that’s how you clean up nicely, huh?”

Silver eyes looked up, and his breath almost hitched at how radiant Yamato himself looked as he approached him in the crowded venue.

“I could say the same about you…” Gaku chuckled, “I’m sure she’s going to appreciate the effort you put in.”

Yamato kept his hands in his pocket, not looking directly at Gaku, probably to hide his embarrassment at being complemented back. He tugged his hair on the side, even if it was styled that way as a way to distract his own nerves.

Somehow, that made the man in front of him a billion times cuter. Gaku wished his daughter was here to witness this.

“Where is she, by the way?”

“Probably getting last minute mics checked up, I’ll be seeing her in a bit.” The white-haired reassured his friend.

“Thank you actually for asking your mom to help her dress up, even when I could have handled it.”

“Don’t worry, mom always wanted a little girl–”

Gaku coughed to cover up what he was about to continue saying, before Yamato grinned at his words teasingly. With their playful conversation, Gaku managed to have Yamato also join backstage. He was going to claim that he’s his guest should anyone have an issue with it.

“So, I was right all along, maybe you should consider settling down if you want one that much–”

He immediately felt his cheeks getting warm, “Oh, c’mon… That was a slip–”

“She has that effect on people, though,” The bespectacled man replied instead, a look of fondness washed over him as he spoke about his little angel, “Yume makes you feel like she’s your own. I’m so glad that she’s nothing like me.”

The white-haired frown immediately at his words, “Again with you bringing yourself down. Stop that, you’d make her sad.”

“But it’s true, she deserves–”

“She deserves someone who loves her and offers her whatever is possible for her own comfort…” Gaku trailed off, turning his gaze to Yamato. “You’re doing your best.”

When he was met with silence, he nudged the green-haired who only chuckled in response.

“What? No sarcastic remarks?”

Yamato shook his head, keeping his eyes on the stage in front of them. “You’re a very good guy, Yaotome. Never change unless it’s for the better.”

The white-haired opened his mouth, but was cut short when the little girl who brought them together tonight approached them with glee.

“You both look so pretty!” Yume chuckled, just as Gaku double checked her mics and Yamato scanned her look as they bent to her height, as if on cue.

“You’re the prettiest one here, kiddo.” Yamato reassured her, booping her nose as Gaku patted her head.

“We’ll be right in the corner if you need any reassurance. Just do as we practiced, yeah?”

Everything got busy until the show started, Yume’s bit was going to be 30 minutes into the show but that didn’t stop Gaku from glancing at Yamato when he saw him at the same spot where they’d just greeted Yume a while back, just as he carried two water bottles and handed one to Yamato when approached him.

“... You should have gone back to your seat,”

“And miss this view of you and her? Not a chance,” The bespectacled man smirked, right after turning his eyes towards the stage, waiting for her turn to play.

“Think you’d ever consider taking me as a student too?”

Gaku raised an eyebrow at him, knowing fully well that there was no way he’d been serious. But decided to play along.

“Maybe then we can make a band, I’m a good singer too.”

“Ha. Show off,” Yamato took a sip of water.

And before he could help himself, the white-haired found himself rambling. “I’ll have you know, my dad actually was this close to signing me off to become an idol.”

“I’ll only believe it when you perform something to me someday.”

“We still have a deal that’s kinda left hanging, from the first night we met…”

At the dimly lit backstage, their gaze on one another was the only thing that beamed as they both just took in the feeling they both felt at that very moment. It was a sense of belonging, like everything right then and there, had been orchestrated for them from the very start of it all even when they were brought together by that one little blessing that stepped foot on stage.

“... Tell you what, I’ll consider it if you don’t forget us over the summer break…”

“I can’t wait to prove you wrong, then.”

“...Now, presenting Nikaidou Yumeko!”

As Yume started playing her ukulele, a sense of pride filled both of them at that very moment. It seemed like a source of confirmation to their mutual promise, just as all their attention had been turned back towards the stage.

“How on earth were you living here in the past school days?”

Gaku almost groaned loudly, until he recalled that he was the one who requested his mom to come help him out with setting the place up in the first place.

“Priorities…” The man told his mother as he moved to pack the boxes on the floor. “You know how busy it suddenly got on my side.”

Funnily enough, it was Gaku’s phone that rung a few days after the concert. He still had not fully packed everything at his place, and thought he should take the lead in starting little by little.

“Hello?”

“Yaotome, you have your doorbell button closed.”

He raised an eyebrow, “And how would you know that?”

“Because Yume’s been blasting it with a dozen rings and you still haven’t answered.”

He moved swiftly to spot them actually outside of his apartment. Gaku swung the door open.

“Do I want to know how you got the address?”

Yume raised her hand, “That would be my doing, Tora-nii shared it from Tsunashi-san,”

Gaku frowned, “... As happy I am to see you. The place is a mess right now–”

“Sweetie, who’s at the door? Oh, it’s good to see you again, Yume-chan.” Gaku’s mom’s voice joined in on their conversation, “You must be her father?”

Yamato smiled before he bowed, “It’s a pleasure. Thanks again for helping her dress up that day.”

She smiled at him, before Yume rushed to hug her. “Yamamura-san, remember that trick you promised you’d show me in the kitchen when given the chance?”

The white-haired finally turned to the other man standing next to him, his eyebrows raised.

“... I can explain.”

“Explain then, because I’m very confused right now.”

Yamato sighed, rubbing his head. “... The babysitter canceled at the last minute.”

Gaku leaned against the dining chair, “And you’re screwed because…?”

The green-haired put his hands together, bowing his head. “I gotta study. My exam’s at midnight. Please watch over her, 4 hours max I promise.”

“You chose me out of all people?”

“Correction, my daughter chose you out of all people.” Yamato replied, shuffling in his steps. “I’ll come back soon, I promise–”

“You can study here, you know…”

The bespectacled man raised an eyebrow at that suggestion, “I’ll probably finish your coffee.”

“So?” Gaku pulled at the chair next to him, ushering for the other man to sit on. “Just call me if you need anything. I actually asked mom to help me out in cleaning, so I apologize for the noises in advance.”

“You need to stop spoiling me…”

“Can’t hear a word,” The white-haired grinned, “Now, will you be sitting or do I need to tie you up?”

Yamato held up his headphones to him in defeat, “Got that covered. Never let Yume hear you say that to me, or anyone for that matter.”

“Can’t bet on it,” Gaku chuckled, making his way to the kitchen. “I’ll get you some coffee.”

The white-haired was met with an expected pinch from the other man present in the room, and he could only stare at him before he watched him take a seat.

“...Thanks, Yaotome-kun.” Yamato said, his tone amused. “How about you be on your way before I pinch you again?”

He laughed, shaking his head as he heard Yamato also chuckle a little bit. The white-haired took in the sight of his mother gently teaching the younger girl the basics of soba making when he reached the kitchen. Somehow, it all felt like everything fell right into place, despite having the two welcomed guests into his apartment.

“How’s everything going?”

Yume turned at hearing Gaku’s voice behind her, “Great, I’m enjoying this honestly. Grandma’s been an amazing teacher.”

His heart skipped a beat at the young girl referring to his mother with that term, he glanced at her who only smiled at him.

“Unfortunately, I’m going to need to leave after we make the sauce. Gaku will help you with the rest of the process.”

That made him smirk before grabbing a pot to make coffee. “Right after I make your dad coffee. Looks like I’ll be teaching you more than one thing over the summer too, huh?”

The youngest one in the room shrugged, “Actually I kept on insisting, plus dad actually looked like he missed you.”

That made both adults in the room raise their eyebrows, Gaku’s mom looked extra amused at what she was saying. While he, on the other hand, felt his cheek getting warmer as he put water into the pot.

He let the noises of the soft conversations go above his head as he just thought of the familiarity he felt whenever he was surrounded by all of them. His hands kept working as a means to distract himself, but how long was he going to push it away for. Of course, his mother was a given default. But, how did the other two fit into the equation?

He thought about the friends he’d made here, a completely new neighborhood. Yet, somehow he always was bound to have them, especially Yamato, linger there and bring him a sense of comfort that no one else had ever been able to put forth into the table.

Gaku decided to push that thought away. After some period of time, he made his way back to the dining room where Yamato was scribbling down his notes. He placed a tray which had coffee, water, and an apple he cut while he was in the kitchen.

“Just in time,” The green-haired took a bite of the apple first, “How’s Yume doing?”

“She’s making soba with mom.”

Yamato chuckled, pouring coffee into one of the mugs Gaku placed. “She’s being an amazing champ about this… I was supposed to take her shopping after I finished, you know.”

“... Why didn’t you tell me? Or any of us, we could have helped–”

“I’m already burdening all of you,” The green-haired shook his head, eyes not leaving his books. “She’s my responsibility.”

“Her birthday is the day after tomorrow, why not squeeze that plan with the outing that you’d have planned for her?”

That’d been when Yamato’s gaze left his books, to stare at the man in front of him like he’d just said the most absurd thing ever. It lasted for a while, to an extent Gaku felt self conscious.

“...What?”

“I’m just surprised you remembered. She’s that important to you, huh?”

So are you. “I’m serious, you should also invite whoever of the squad that’s here.”

“Great idea, Gaku-san.” Yume finally appeared, with a bowl of soba in her hand, placing it in front of her dad. “We never do something with others for the birthdays I recall at least.”

“You’re turning 7, there’s no way you remember birthdays past 5.” Yamato deadpanned.

“You know what I mean!”

“Though… It’s not a bad idea, but I’m pretty sure it’s just gonna be us, probably Midou and Tsunashi-san. The rest of them would have work occupying them.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to try,” Gaku got hold of his phone, “I’m going to text them all now.”

“Honey, I’m going to be leaving now. You should help Yume-chan with the rest of the dishes.”

“Thanks, mom. I’ll see you out. Wait for me Yume.”

He closed the door behind him, as his mother adjusted her bag on her shoulder. “Thanks for all your help. I’ll see you during the weekend?”

She hummed. “You need to decide how you feel about him.”

Gaku let out a nervous laugh. “Mom–”

“Don’t even think of lying to me. You were never like this around Tsumugi-chan, and you two were engaged…”

“... But. He’s a guy… And he was married, I’m guessing.”

“He still hasn’t talked to you about that?”

“We’re just good friends, mom. That’s all that’s there to it.”

His mother looked at him like he turned into a kid again, “I raised you better than that. If he makes you happy, then nothing else should matter.”

“I don’t even know if he’s into an idea like that. And he has a kid–”

“Who already sees you as her own. And so do you. I may be old, but I’m not blind. And seeing the three of you together was something close to perfection.”

Gaku looked at the floor in front of him, letting her words sink in. He heard her sigh, before ruffling his hair.

“Go back in before they start getting too suspicious about why you’ve taken so long. Yume-chan almost has bunny ears, too.”

The white-haired chuckled, engulfing his mother into a hug. “Thank you.”

“... Just think about it, I’ll see you on Friday.”

*

Gaku stuffed a couple of more of his bags into Yamato’s truck, “Hurry up, otherwise we’ll be late in picking up Ryuu and Midou.”

It was the 22nd of June, amazing how time just flew by especially those couple of days. It was hectic, but it had been the most fun Gaku could recall having in a very long time. Somehow, everything was planned by a whim, and he didn’t dislike it at all.

Gaku didn’t even recall when he fell asleep. The last thing he could recall was having dinner, opening a movie where he and his guests stayed up and talked about nothing, until Yamato kicked them out of the dining room for being too nosy.

Yume had fallen asleep on his shoulder. He smiled as he lowered her gently to the other side of the sofa, scribbling around quietly to the dining side. The clock struck at 2AM.

As soon as the door slipped open, he saw Yamato glance at him with tired eyes.

“Aced it?”

“You bet… She knocked out?”

The white-haired nodded, “Like a baby.”

The bespectacled man stood up, as they both went to where she slept. Gaku suddenly noticed how Yamato’s lemon cologne filled his nostrils, he blamed sleepiness for having this sense heightened but he made a semi-mental note on that when he moved closer to bend towards the couch.

“Don’t even think about driving at this hour. I can move her to my bed,” Gaku whispered threateningly, “It would be big enough for the two of you.”

Yamato chuckled, picking her up gently. “Yume’s a very messy sleeper. Maybe she can take the bed and we take the couch instead.”

The white-haired tried to ignore how his heart bumped harder into his ribcage as he opened the bedroom door and dimmed the lamp he had open beforehand just as Yamato gently tucked her in. Gaku brought the comforter closer to her petite form as he adjusted the pillows, gentle enough not to wake her.

“... I’m sleeping on the floor,” The white-haired whispered, and was met with a strong gaze.

“No way–”

Gaku was the one to shush him, reminding Yamato of their previous attempt to not wake her up. They moved to the living room again as he closed the door slowly behind him.

“It’s either both of us or nothing, your pick, Yaotome.”

Once again, he sighed in frustration. But, it was too late for this shit. “Fine, let me bring the blankets–”

Somehow, even when he knew that Yamato was probably a billion times more exhausted than him, managed to drag him to the sofa as he curled onto the other side.

“... Nikaidou…”

“Shh…” He heard his friend muttering as he pulled off his glasses, just as he pulled off a blanket Gaku had forgotten about placed on the top of the sofa. “Go to sleep for now.”

 “We’ll both fall off…”

“Guess we’ll fall off together then.”

The birthday princess ran into the car, jumping in the back seat and was way more energetic than either of the adults present with her at the moment. “C’mon, dad! We need to get our own bags!”

Yamato groaned, handing Gaku his apartment keys. “I hate you for making such a plan that requires us to use up this much energy…”

“No complaining! You promised we could do anything I choose today.”

“I know, honey. I’m just worried Yaotome-kun tricked you into it–”

“Hey!”

They kept on nudging each other before Gaku left the crib and drove off to their next destination where the Nikaidous would need to pack their stuff for their plan to spend the day at the water park.

They were both awoken screaming as they felt a sudden weight of something get dropped to their legs.

“Good afternoon!” Yume announced, her hair all cutely sticking to every side of her face as she smiled sweetly at both of them. Gaku groaned as he rubbed his eyes while Yamato turned back to the other side.

“...Yume why…”

“What time is it?” Gaku asked, as he blinked at the little girl in front of him. The sun had been barely visible where they slept, since they still had the curtains shut.

“It’s noon already! You both slept until 2PM, and here I thought dad was the only lazy adult I’ve known.”

Gaku stood up immediately from his position. Taking his phone and scrolling through his messages to see if his reservations went through.

“Shit… They’re only going to confirm the booking if we at least reach there by 4PM.” He rubbed his temples, and that made Yamato face him.

“Even if we tipped them?”

The white-haired glared at the green-haired, “I’m not letting you bribe them, they’ll get used to it if we ever wanna go next time.”

“What plan?” Yume blinked in confusion, just as Yamato also sat up to take her in his lap with his legs still tangled with Gaku’s.

“Yaotome’s taking us to the water park for your birthday.”

“Really?!”

To say the least, Gaku never expected for a tackling hug to make him ever feel this warm. Even if he did get a bump at the back of his head from the impact of it happening so unexpectedly as Yamato’s laughter filled in the air.

“Oh my god!”

After the delays that took place, losing Ryuu and Midou on their way here to reuniting with them, not to mention the stop at Nikaidou’s residence that took almost 20 minutes, and the banters in the car that kept on being consistent because both men decided they’re road experts, Gaku finally parked in front of the water park with the other party joining as they parked right next to them.

Yume was the first to get down from the car, as she clapped and jumped back and forth. “I’m so excited!”

“Easy there.” Yamato sighed, greeting the other two adults who joined the sudden celebration plan. Gaku held out his hand to Yume.

Midou scooped her in his arms, just as Ryuu patted her head.

“Happy birthday!”

“Thank you,” She answered after being put back on the ground, she latched herself onto Gaku before he also patted her head.

“Let’s go have an amazing time.”

Yume nodded as she took his hand and unexpectedly dragged her dad along as they made their way to the ticket booth while everything else got settled. There were way too many things to do around here, and it was going to take a whole day to probably finish just as Gaku anticipated when the other part of his plan was going to commence in motion.

They rode on slides, huge water buckets, and floating balloons before Yume started going towards the edge and that’s where the water slide-stair-case style had been at the peak of starting.

“I want to go on a three way tube with Tsunashi-san and Tora-nii this time,”

Yamato stared at his daughter who only grinned back at him.

“What are you planning?”

Yume shrugged as Gaku shook his head as he grabbed a double-tube for the two of them. It kind of looked like the little brat had him all figured out, ever since the day has begun.

Yamato went down as soon as Gaku parked in front of their house, “I won’t take long.”

“You sure you don’t need help–”

The green-haired pushed Gaku back, “Nope, stay. I’ll call you to send Yume to get ready.”

The white-haired eyed the rare-view mirror back at the girl seated behind. “You want me to open any snacks til then–”

“When are you marrying my dad already?”

Gaku stared at her from the mirror, to fully turning back to her as she smiled back mischievously towards him.

“Yume, don’t ask me that again in front of him–”

“Of course I won’t. But I need to know your intentions, since you two look like you’re minutes away from kissing–”

“We’re not–” Gaku held himself back. Sighing, there was no point in arguing. He kept his gaze at the mirror as he spoke to Yume.

“I know dad, and I know you. I’ve seen enough from both of you to know that you belong together. Just… Talk to him. I want you to keep on being a part of our lives…”

Yume looked at the window instead of keeping her gaze into Gaku’s eyes. “We never talk about it… And you’d know. You spent enough time with the both of us. Ever since mom, he’s been locking himself up. He barely let anyone in, including me and I’m his daughter. To this day, he doesn’t let me or anyone see his grief… But... He might let you see it.”

The white-haired exhaled, patting her head gently. Wondering how much more layers are there to uncover with having an almost-7 year old speak with that much wisdom in her blood.

They both deserved so much more. And he knew he would do anything to make that happen in reality.

“Don’t get your hopes up.”

Yume grinned instead, “That is still better than a no, though.”

“I’ve been betrayed by my own kid, unbelievable.”

Gaku chuckled as he placed the tube for Yamato to get on, “C’mon, Nikaidou. Maybe she got bored of us since we’ve been stuck for almost three days together.”

The green-haired frowned upon those words, “My kid was never like that. You must have corrupted her–”

And that was when Gaku flipped over the tube, knocking Yamato off with the rest of them laughing at the sight.

“Hurry, Gaku-san!” Yume called out, as she went on ahead with the other two adults. “We’ll be separated if you stray too far.”

The white-haired chuckled as he held his hand out towards Yamato. “You heard her, Nikaidou–”

And that was when the green-haired retaliate by pushing Gaku back, who resurfaced and couldn’t help but laugh along with how much of a laughing fit Yamato had as he barely held on to the tube.

“Hurry, Yaotome or you’ll seriously be left behind.”

Gaku swam towards the tube as he launched himself with Yamato in front of him, soon enough they were making their way together towards every stop of the slide of stairs dropping further and further down when the group cheered after every drop.

Midou, Ryuu and Yume stopped at the 8th drop. Yamato and Gaku stared as Midou explained, when they halted.

“Yume wants to go by the fish tunnel before it closes. Ryunosuke just read that they close that bit after 8PM.”

Gaku turned to Yamato, who nodded and easily went, “Take care of her ‘til we’re back.”

The white-haired laughed in glee as Yamato pushed forth into the water whirl-pool, “Are you serious, Nikaidou?!”

“We’re not stopping until the last stair-slide!”

Maybe his gut was not wrong about how right everything felt, maybe there was something more hidden. No, a blessing was right beyond his reach which was waiting for him to uncover for the both of them.

Right then and there, Yaotome Gaku could easily say that his heart had grown to adore Nikaidou Yamato. And he was not going to let this love slide without a fight, even if it was going to be difficult.

*

After they had tucked in the birthday girl for the night, the duo stared at each other before each one chuckled at reminiscing about the day they had.

“That was so much fun. Maybe we should always leave you in charge of plans.”

“... Please don’t, that was enough pressure as it is.”

Yamato opened the fridge and grabbed a couple of beers as he nodded towards the balcony. Gaku stared at him.

“I need to drive back.”

“Like hell I’m letting you drive back this late,” Gaku laughed when Yamato threw his very words back at him. “We have tons of rooms in the house. Don’t worry.”

With that, he had no choice but to shrug and go on with that plan. The crisp air of the summer night was cool enough that it was not seething. So that was another winning situation as they grabbed the chairs and settled in.

They held out their cans, clinking before starting to sip away.

“... Calm down, Nikaidou. The night is still young.” Gaku mumbled, after seeing Yamato chugging and reaching out for another can.

The other man only chuckled, keeping another can nearby. “The cake touch was great, by the way. I don’t think she saw it coming, since we did say the plan was on a whim.”

“Thanks. Remind me to ask Midou for the pics later.”

As Yamato hummed, the two of them went quiet for a while as they took in the view and the taste of the bitter beer they were drinking, until the bespectacled of the two spoke out again.

“... You know something, Yaotome?”

“Hmm?”

“... I forgot that I was able to actually have fun even after passing the age of 28. That’s when I also got married, you know?”

Gaku kept quiet, eyeing the man next to him as he chuckled bitterly and took in another gulp of his beer.

“Can’t believe it’s been 5 years… How did they even accept your application this late? Is it having that face advantage?” Yamato asked multiple things at once, continuing sipping on his beer as if nothing happened before chuckling because Gaku nudged him a bit too hard.

“... How did you even jump from one statement to another like that…”

“Guess it’s the alcohol’s doing.” Yamato looked back, “Well? Should I start or should you?”

“And what if you’re not gonna like my answer? Then what?”

The green-haired laughed, staring at his can. “Your face will be enough to neutralize it. Now spill.”

Gaku also took a sip, letting the alcohol numb his emotions. He needed to let his guard down first so that Yamato could also feel comfortable doing so. Even if it was with the help of alcohol.

“I was engaged to his daughter.”

“...And that ended badly.”

“I liked her, at least I think I did?” The white-haired drank a bit more of his beer, “Guess he must have felt kinda bad or something. After being tied by the knot for almost 2 years…”

Yamato winced playfully after chuckling, swirling the can in his hand. “So, you think he feels bad about it?”

“I don’t think any of us expected her to come out as a lesbian. I mean, she could have told me that she wasn’t interested…” Gaku honestly concluded, “Guess it’s not really anyone’s fault. She’s happier now–”

Yamato turned his gaze towards the sky, with cheeks still flushed and he wondered if that was his doing or if it was the alcohol. “Do you think I’d ever be deserving… To feel that way humbly too?”

Gaku leaned closer to where Yamato sat, not turning his gaze away. “There’s nothing wrong with you feeling that way, Nikaidou. Of course you deserve to be happy.”

“You know, Yume was an accident. A drunken one.” The green-haired spoke, his voice shaky but he went on. “We weren’t even married when it happened… But I swore I was never going to let my kid ever go through what I went through as a bastard child…”

So that was why he felt this closely related to him . Yamato’s eyes were filled with tears as he looked up at Gaku’s face.

“Instead, she had to suffer with something way worse. She lost her mother way too early… And that too was because of me. Fucking hell, I wish I never thought of perusuing my acting career courses…”

“Hey, it’s okay…” The white-haired shifted to the same seat where he engulfed his friend into a tight hug, rubbing his back soothingly. Yamato sobbed into his shoulder as he hugged back, dropping the empty can of beer.

“No it’s not… The day I decided to do that, we had an argument. She told me not to. But I…”

The green-haired hiccupped as he tried to gather his strength. “I don’t even remember what the argument was about, anymore… But I drove her to go out in the rain. And that’s how she crashed… It should have been me–”

And that was when Gaku punched Yamato square in the face.

“What the fuck, Yaotome. That hurt!” They stared at each other as Gaku too, had begun to cry.

“Nikaidou, you’re the best thing that could have ever happened to that kid!” The white-haired yelled, not holding back anymore. “Don’t you dare ever tell me she was not made out of love after how much gentleness has been displayed from her, and she could have only gotten it from you!”

Gaku went on, as he finally had Yamato’s attention in his tight grip (both physically and metaphorically), “She tries her level best to live up to your expectations. She wants to make you happy, proud that you have her. As a 7 year old, do you know how much she invests her time in crafting stuff so that she’s distracted instead of dwelling on how her father is locking up his emotions instead of grieving? You need to let go, Nikaidou. You need to forgive yourself.”

“...Yaotome…”

“... I know it’s easier said than done. But please try. We’re here for you… I’m here for you.”

Yamato pulled Gaku into a tight hug again, as they both shook with the overwhelming emotions that washed over the two of them. After a while, the white-haired could sense that the man in his arms was calmer, when they laid together on the beach chair as his friend looked up at him.

“I wanna try harder… For her.”

“You can. You’re already halfway there” Gaku reassured him, just as he tilted his head a bit to get a better look at Yamato. “...Feel better?”

The green-haired playfully punched Gaku in the chest. “Now I do.”

Gaku chuckled, as he tightened his grip and unconsciously left a kiss on Yamato’s forehead. He could feel the other man’s breath stop for a moment before realizing what had happened.

“... Did that offend you? I’m sorry–”

“No, don’t.” He finally cracked a smile, before standing up from the seat. Leaving Gaku feeling empty, his arms were getting used to the feeling of having Yamato nestle its way into them. “Lemme show you to your room, otherwise we’ll probably fall asleep here.”

He had no choice but to wait for now, and that would not be the only time he’d persist if he was already this close into the territory. Gaku reached out to ruffle Yamato’s hair, earning both a chuckle and nudge as they went back into the house.

When he had awoken from his slumber, he smelled something nice coming from the kitchen. Gaku decided to pop his head outside, only to see Yamato using the pantry upstairs where it was close enough to all of their rooms. Yume grinned the moment she spotted him, just as she stood next to her dad who still looked sleepy as he slipped eggs into her plate.

“Morning.”

She waved as she made her way to the little table on the side of the mini-hall, “How come you’re not so hungover?”

“Yume… That’s rude–”

Gaku looked at Yume instead for a moment, “You look prettier with your hair down like that.”

“Thanks, Gaku-san.” She blushed, smiling at the compliment, “At least someone’s less grumpy than dad this morning.”

“I drank far less than your dad,” The white-haired took a closer look at the green-haired’s bed hair, chuckling at the adorable sight. “He overdid it, as usual.”

Yamato scowled, not paying Gaku any heed. “Just tell me how you want your eggs. Brat.”

“Scrambled, please.” He answered, resisting the urge to mess up the messy head of hair even more. Yume chuckled at the sight, “I’ll be using the washroom for a while.”

The green-haired hummed, “I already kept for you a toothbrush and toothpaste in my bathroom. You can always yell if you need anything else.”

Gaku had no complaints since he was eager to see the man’s room anyway, he took in the view of the bed placed neatly in the middle as it was directed towards the TV he had placed. Another resting chair, a cupboard… His room seemed too simple from the glimpse he got from Yume’s room while he walked into here.

His eyes caught a glimpse of a picture of Yume on the mini table near the arm-chair. It was a picture of her when she seemed no older than 2 years, in a light silver dress with a tiara. It had  probably been one of her birthday pictures. Gaku couldn’t help but smile at it, and somehow feel proud of how far she’d come since then. That was before he saw a recent picture of Yume and him taken when he was fixing her mic, right before her performance.

As touched as Gaku felt, he hated how Yamato was in neither one of those pictures. A part of him wanted to go and remind the other man of their talk last night, of the unspoken promises that were shared. He was going to make sure to change that, even if he would sneakily need to add a photo of his own collection.

Just as the white-haired decided that was enough snooping around, his eyes flickered towards Yamato’s laptop that seemed to be beeping. But the sight of the picture he’d sent Yamato of Yume at the school touched him in a way where it was unexplainable. Was it his recent affection for the other man blooming, or did it just suddenly seem that every little gesture which is appreciated in hidden by the other man just shooting at his heart like an arrow with no going back?

But all that died down once he saw a name of a very gorgeous woman face-timing him, persistently back and forth.

“Yaotome? What’s taking you so long–” Yamato finally walked into the room, heading towards the laptop as he completely shut the lid off. “There we go. Much better.”

Gaku turned to hide his slightly creeping rage, just as he walked into the bathroom. “...Who was that?”

“No one important,” The green-haired brushed him off, “Your food will get cold. C’mon, we’re both waiting for you to dig in.”

He tried to muster up whatever he felt, and decided to wash it all away with pouring water all over his face as it stung more than any burn he’d ever faced in the kitchen.

“...Hey, why are you sulking?”

“...Am not–”

“Liar,” Yamato chuckled, leaning against the bathroom door outside. “I think after last night, we’re past any ‘little secrets’,”

Gaku then looked at Yamato, really looked right at him.

“... You’d tell me if something or someone important was going to make an appearance in your life, wouldn't you?”

“What kind of question is that?” The green-haired scratched his hair, “... Of course you’d be the first to know.”

“Then that’s enough for me,” Gaku squeezed the toothpaste, probably leaving Yamato all the more confused but he only raised his hands in the air.

“Weirdo, hurry up. I’m starving.”

And he was going to wait, for as long as he’d need. Right after he settled for how he would approach him about it, for now he was fine with the way things are.

*

At least, that was what he thought.

Almost two weeks later, just as the Nikaidous came back from their sudden take off towards the countryside, Yume requested that her lessons with Gaku continue. The white-haired had no choice but to oblige, even when he did scold her about needing to rest.

“Please, don’t turn into your father. Especially when it comes to these kind of things.”

Yume laughed, “Says you. What if I’d choose you to be my role model one day?”

Gaku raised an eyebrow at her as they walked back to the house, “Don’t say stuff like that in front of him.”

“Why not? I’m my own person.” The girl responded before stopping at the doorstep and jingling the keys in.

He had not asked about their sudden disappearance, but he was glad at least his student was acting normal. As normal as he would be able to rate it. His crush, however, was another story. But, Gaku knew there were a couple of things which needed addressing, which is why he made his way to finally meet the other man that occupied a very large part of his brain, heart, and um, another body part. Especially as of late.

But, no one could have anticipated what they opened the door to.

Gaku stood dumbfoundedly next to Yume, who seemed to be equally shocked at the sight in front of her as soon as they opened the door to the Nikaidou household.

The younger girl uncomfortably shifted in her position, adjusting her duffle bag and ukulele case, not forgetting to steal a glance at Gaku. “Dad… What is this?”

Yamato forced a smile, showing off his suit. “Oh, you’re back sweetie. Pretty cool, huh? Just in time to see your dad off on his first date after ages…”

“What the hell…” Gaku found himself swearing, not tearing his gaze away from Yamato. “Is this a flight response to the almost-kiss that was going to happen a couple of days ago–”

“Shut up! Shut up… This is not–” Yamato’s response was immediate, full of rage. It was almost like they forgot they weren’t alone. He stopped for a moment, looking almost as enraged as he spoke now, while facing the other man too just as he seemed to be avoiding him when they walked into the house. “Not everything revolves around you, Yaotome!”

He couldn’t even remember most of it. Everything seemed like a blur, lines coming on top of one another. All in all, It was one of those rare nights where the both of them had some room to breathe, so they decided to meet and go back to the bar they’d hit off the first time they’d met. Except, Gaku left a small tiny miscalculation from his behalf as the rest of the night went on, with his drunken state only growing gradually worse as time progressed.

It had been getting harder and harder to control his emotions, especially when Yamato would suddenly appear all pretty being dressed up in the most casual thing ever. Like it’d been no one’s business.

Gaku’s eyes noted that there were other eyes than his enjoying the view, so he decided to put his slight tipsiness in use as he leaned towards him. Nuzzling closer.

“Yaotome… What the hell are you doing?”

“Resting my eyes…”

Yamato chuckled, but his tone sounded pissed and Gaku knew it. “What’s with you today, for real? If you’re tired maybe we should just go back–”

Gaku only slumped harder. “...Why do you look so pretty tonight?”

Yamato made his way to slowly support the white-haired by leaning him against his shoulder. “What are you even saying? Just… Try not to fall on your face.”

That was when he caught a whiff of Yamato’s cologne again. It was both comforting and intoxicating in a sense. The scent of the lemon perfume with his own soap and shampoo made Gaku wish if he could just have a taste–

He felt himself flushing harder, he turned his head to the other side. Or he would literally act upon his urges, and it was getting worse at this closer proximity.

“Yaotome,” Yamato nudged him a bit with his hip. “Don’t fall asleep yet. The cab should be here any second, hang on a bit more.”

The white-haired hummed, trying to ignore how everything coming out from the other man was making him feel a billion things at once, all stemming from affection. At this rate, he was going to let the alcohol actually take over.

“...Maybe you should sit in front–”

“Are you insane? Do you want to break your neck when you can barely hold your head up?”

They barely spoke after that since his mind was hazy anyway, and he guessed that Yamato too was reaching to that amount of fatigue. Who knew how many hours had already passed since they walked into the bar. Gaku leaned towards the window, furrowing his eyes shut just as he waited for this feeling to pass.

“...Yaotome.”

“Hmm?” He still had his eyes closed.

“...That’s only going to make it worse, you know.”

Gaku hazily gazed at Yamato in the darkness of the cab, the driver had already started driving them towards their destination. He somehow looked way more handsome. Was it the acceptance of letting his guard finally down so he’d be able to feel everything about Yamato this deeply? Or was he always this beautiful but he only started noticing it now?

His gaze lowered down towards the other man’s lips. Only when his eyes met those green orbs did he realize that the raised eyebrow was directed at him, and that Yamato had been expecting an answer.

The white-haired chose to shrug, leaning slightly towards the middle as his head gently bumped into Yamato’s shoulder. He honestly didn’t want to share any more warmth in fear of what his drunken state of mind would produce as a result.

“...Are you an idiot?”

Gaku chuckled, still adjusting himself. “You’re as tired as me, if not even more–”

The green-haired clicked his tongue, before moving his shoulder closer to support Gaku’s head. That made him open his eyes and look up at the side of Yamato’s face that was close to his view.

“...You’re stubborn over the wrong shit–”

“It’s not shit if it's something that is going to give you comfort…” Yamato mumbled, lowering his gaze on a whim of feelings. “Why the heck were you being this stubborn, huh?”

Their eyes met and the world froze. At that moment, the both of them felt the same thing even if he knew his friend was going to deny it as he unconsciously leaned towards him.

Because you looked kissable. And I wanted to claim you.

That statement hurt. A lot. It stung like fire, but Gaku knew he had to try and fight for it since he’d been trying to cover all these feelings up and only failing from time to time again.

“I can’t keep lying to myself anymore.”

“Gaku-san…” Yume stared at him. Funny how the tables have turned when she was the one who asked him to make a move not too long ago. He smiled at her before patting her head.

“...Let me do this.”

“Don’t do this. You’re going to ruin everything.”

The voice that weakly interrupted him was Yamato's, surprisingly, he rubbed his face. Still not looking Gaku in the eye. But it was too late to go back now, and he was not going to let Yamato run away from this that easily.

“What are you even scared of? You and Yume were the best thing to happen to me in this town. Why won’t you let me in?”

“Stop it…” The green-haired looked like he’d been enduring actual, physical pain with every word which came out of his mouth. “Leave. I’ve already made up my mind–”

A creeping rage was overtaking Gaku, and before he could help himself he just snapped. “Was that also why you hid her face from me when she called you that day?”

“You have no right. You had no right!” Yamato yelled again, as if trying to displace all of his anger from everything he’d felt to lump onto the fear of anticipation that Gaku was trying to open the door for. “...You’re not anyone important…”

“Then why did you send me all those signals?” Gaku kept his hard gaze on Yamato, not regretting a single word that came out of his heart. “Nikaidou, I know you’re not that dumb–”

“This is my life… It’s only normal for me to think of moving on.”

“Dad, you’re not being fair!”

“You’re siding with him?” Yamato asked in disbelief, also showing his daughter his wrath as he ignored her teary face. “And you think he is? He took over without us asking him to! He’s no one, and should be considered nothing to us!”

“...He’s right, Yume.”

“Gaku-san… Don’t–”

The white-haired bent down to leave a kiss on her little hands, rubbing his thumbs on her hands as tears rolled down her face.

“I’ll catch you later, it’s not your fault. But, I need to leave for now. He’s not going to accept me yet.”

Just as Gaku himself turned to leave, Yume stormed off towards her room, leaving the two men standing alone after a slam echoed in this semi-lonely house after once where it stemmed with nothing but joy. Dulling the ache more than what anyone could have anticipated. And what hurt him the most was the last memory of Yamato’s hurt face stamped in the center of his soul, which he would probably need to endure for the longest time.

*

The white-haired laid in bed at his mom’s place with earbuds plugged, scrolling through his playlists he had opened with his laptop. He was kind of glad she still kept his stuff intact despite the whole divorce ordeal, even after he had to move in with his dad. He had been staying there ever since that day, and he has not checked his phone ever since, either.

His family were more than welcoming, he didn’t need to elaborate too much to convince them to stay, and he was thankful for this change of pace. But was this really what he had needed all along?

Gaku ran from one direction ever since the failed engagement into this string web of a mess. Why on earth did anyone from his side or Yamato’s side even see any sparks there? Including his daughter?

Maybe this life would be the ideal life for him. Trapped in his mother’s house, working at the restaurant in the customer service industry, and going on to build up his future with the spendings he’d get as bonuses if the targets are achieved. It could probably take him to different sorts of places in life.

But deep down, he knew that was not what he wanted. What he wanted more than anything was to see the smiling faces of two people who grew to imprinting their names into his heart, without even trying.

He was met by knocks on his door, not turning around he responded. “What is it, mom? I’ll be down by the evening–”

“Heh, maybe I should take some pics for Yume to see her sensei’s old room. How about it, Yaotome?”

Gaku turned to find Midou standing in the doorway, smiling apologetically for intruding.

“Hope this isn't a bad time.”

“Weren’t you and Ryuu traveling?”

“We were, until a crying little girl called me and spilled the beans as soon as we got the signal.” The brunet explained, leaning against the doorway. “But honestly, you look a hundred times worse. You’ve found yourself a very good spot to hide in these past few weeks, I’ll give you that.”

The white-haired scowled, “Why are you here?”

“To talk some sense into you,” Midou deadpanned, looking right at Gaku. “That four-eyes won’t be subtle. So I had to try my luck here first.”

The white-haired remained silent, Midou Torao decided that was one of the very rare moments where he would unleash his wisdom cap to achieve the greater good.

“Listen, I’ve known Nikaidou for as long as I can tell.” The brunet spoke, his tone gentle but firm. “And I have seen the way he went from one place in his life to another. After his wife died, heck he probably didn’t even love her as much, but he did everything he could for Yume… But he forgot himself in the process.”

“...Then you came along, and you taught him how to live again. I’ve seen the two of you together, it’s like magic.”

“... Nikaidou didn’t seem to think so–”

“You and I both know that he tends to be both a liar, and a coward at times.” Midou sighed, “Check your phone when you’re ready. I’ll leave this here for you.”

*

Gaku fell into a slumber and woke up in between without even realizing it. While turning, he eyed the box that was placed on top of his table. He honestly didn’t bother going through it when Midou was present because he still had a hard time letting everything sink in. Everyone else in the house must have turned in for the night, too. So, he was going to get the needed privacy which he craved for.

Though, when he opened it, he was met by a card that was handmade by Yume. It was silver, with a beautifully black decorated ribbon. It had a makeshift of a soba bowl which was made from different colors. Gaku had not even looked into the box, all he wanted was to see a glimpse of that little kid who had given him more joy than he could have foreseen in his life. He had forgotten it was even his birthday until he saw the card in the box, he glanced at the clock in front of him which read 1AM.

He read the note, thinking through the note and stood up to head for a late night walk.

I miss you. Hope you have an amazing one, I know you’re taking a break right now but please let me know when I can visit.

Of course, Gaku knew that separation hurt more than anything else in the universe. He had first hand experience with it when his parents divorced. Ever since then, he had just been looking for ways to distract himself from the pain. And this was the first time in a long time, where he felt completely healed. And even that had been taken away from him.

He was also no fool, he knew that sooner or later he’d have to accept this grief and move on, because that's how life had always been.

But why did it feel more like a part of him was dying?

The white-haired was heading to no destination at all, but he guessed it wouldn't hurt to appreciate moments like these before going back to the school routine. And before he knew it, he was taking the stairs to his apartment even though he chose to avoid it in the first place.

And as he stood in the hallway, he found the last person on earth he’d expected to see on his doorstep. He kept his distance but was close enough to hear him, luckily the floor was empty and there were dividers so whatever would be said would stay and die here.

“...Ugh. I don’t even know if you’re ever going to forgive me. But if you are in there and you’re avoiding me… Guess I deserve it… If it makes you feel any better, the date sucked ass by the way.” Yamato spoke, his speech was kinda jumbly. Gaku guessed that he could be tipsy, but didn’t interrupt as he stood where he was. “Even though I was kind of following your advice… Maybe it’s better this way, ‘cuz if I saw your face I would not have the courage to even be here.”

Yamato’s head slumped down, his eyes still closed. “Yaotome… You deserve someone whole. You deserve someone that life never broke. You deserve so much more than what I could ever offer you…

And yet… Do you remember how I told Yume that you walked into our lives and took over? I was wrong. You fit right fucking in, Yaotome. You’re everything we ever needed… Everything that I somehow needed… I just–”

And before he could help himself, Gaku ran towards Yamato, pinning him against the door a bit too hard where he accidentally bumped the back of his head with the door as he devoured the other man’s taste, marking it within his veins, for what he had hoped would be forever.

“...Ouch…” Was how their brief kiss got broken off. But, Gaku was not complaining since he got to witness Yamato’s red cheeks getting redder by the minute and their close proximity. “... Fuck. You weren’t even home–”

“Shh…” The white-haired took him into a loving hug, “Let me appreciate you a bit more for doing this on my birthday. And I’ll only ever want you, by the way. Knowing you has made me realize that I’d rather have this than nothing at all.”

When he felt the other man’s arms wrap around him tightly at his response, Gaku felt like he had the entire world in his arms. “... I’m sorry it took that long, actually. I was expecting you to half send back the gift…”

“I couldn’t do that with you sneaking in Yume’s card like that… Where is she?”

“My dad’s… She complained to him about me, and decided she needed time to be less mad at me…”

Gaku chuckled, taking Yamato’s hands and bringing them closer to him. “I can help you call her…”

The green-haired shook his head, murmuring. “...Not now… Not tonight at least.”

He would be lying if he said that he did not feel hard at the sight of his beloved looking at him with unmasked desire. The white-haired decided to close the distance and actually relish the taste of the man who’d turned his world upside down, to actually appreciating how soothing the after effect was the minute he felt those lips kiss him back just as eagerly.

Not before dragging Yamato back into his apartment, he could do all the explaining that would be needed by both his mother and his newly found daughter by the next morning after.

*

Yamato sighed before closing the phone call, glancing at Gaku as they walked during a calm afternoon as they got down from the car and made their way to meet Yume at the park nearby both their previous destinations.

“There. I called and booked an appointment. Happy?”

The white-haired leaned in to place a quick kiss onto his beloved’s cheek, to which his reaction was to hold his cheek and look at him dumbfoundedly.

“You idiot! We’re in public–”

“And that’s the only reason I didn’t aim for your lips instead,” Gaku whispered back, smirking at the sight before him as the other man pushed him away.

“Stop it. Yume’s going to see before we even tell her–”

“She’s going to know without either of us saying anything. My princess is just that smart.” The white-haired said, his tone filled with pride.

Yamato glanced back at those words, gaze not leaving the white-haired’s face who only raised an eyebrow back.

“Your princess, huh?”

Gaku smiled as he leaned closer towards Yamato, “Ours. Because her mom is the queen of my heart.”

The green-haired smirked, seemingly pissed. “As far as I know, you saw me naked last night, right?”

“Mmm,” The white-haired sighed in satisfaction, “And boy was that a sight–”

“Yaotome–”

“What the hell? Is this real?”

That made them stop arguing as Gaku noticed the little girl’s gaze was on their intertwined fingers. Yume was sitting on the swings and looked like she was minutes away from crying into the happiest scream.

“...I could do something else, but he’s not going to like it–”

Yamato pinched Gaku as he yelped in pain, sighing as he shook his head.

“Don’t provoke him into this, you know he’s insane. Come here already… I’m sorry.”

Yume made her way to face the both of them, Gaku immediately scooped her in his arms, feeling her little arms around him.

“You won’t go away now, will you?”

The white-haired shook his head, “If only you brought your grandpa along. I was going to give him both a punch–”

“Yaotome.” He knew Yamato was scolding him with that tone switch, but Gaku continued.

“And that I’m going to be taking care of both of you from now on…”

He gazed upon Yamato, who exhaled with his cheeks still deeply dyed in crimson as he reached out to rub the top of her head. “He even made me call a therapist. Don’t worry.”

“You managed to convince him?” Yume blinked at Gaku who chuckled, before dragging Yamato closer as well.

“With a lot of pampering…” The three of them shared an embrace, like the family they’d always meant to be. Finally, everything seemed to fall right into place. And it was felt amongst the synchronization of their souls at that moment.

*

Of course after that, not all was sunshine and rainbows. Most of it was though, in Gaku’s eyes. His mother was delighted as he just noted down that he was going to need to make a planned trip with her over winter break to have his Nikaidous introduced to the rest of the family. They both knew it would take a lot of work, and they were both willing. There were still hard days that needed all of their strengths to cope and move forward against.

“Yamato. Yamato, it’s okay. Look at me–”

Gaku tried to be as gentle as possible when he found his lover shaking with tears in his sleep, his breath ragged as he was having an episode of attack which he tended to suppress if his mind was in a much more alert state.

This is the first time it happened, and he was slightly thankful that their daughter was away for camp during it so that Yamato would be able to accept his emotions more willingly rather than keep a straight and strong act for her.

He only calmed down when he slipped right next to him on the sofa, hugging him as tightly as he could as he rocked him back and forth gently.

“R-rain–”

“It’s not raining… You’re right here with me, see how you’re safe here?” The white-haired squeezed his beloved’s hand, reminding him to use his other senses to come back to reality.

Gaku reminded him to breathe and it all came slowly. He made sure to share his warmth and keep whispering soothingly until it passed.

Only then did it seem like Yamato came back calmly, just as he leaned into Gaku’s chest as he let everything out. And he was going to take in all of it, not leaving a single drop of grief unshared.

There were also times when Yamato shared with him as much love, if not a billion times back.

He recalled that fever that didn’t leave him, as he tried to switch his position into a much bearable one when he felt a small gentle hand switching his compresses with her little eyes gazing with concern.

“... Yume… You’re also going to get sick–”

“Dad, I don’t wanna hear it from you.” Yume told Gaku, just as Yamato made his way towards the bed with a bowl of soup. “Mom’s already here, and we’re both going to monitor your fever until you’re better.”

The white-haired hazily gazed at his two beloveds looking at one another for a brief moment, before the green-haired spoke to their daughter.

“I thought we agreed–”

“Face it, the term mom suits you more–”

“Make it make sense! I’m a man! Just like him!”

And that made Gaku laugh hysterically despite how shitty he felt, and that memory was sealed away tightly on his soul when his lover sighed and left a lingering kiss on the forehead, as if he could not help how endearing that unexpected reaction was.

And definitely, there were moments that took over all else, which definitely made him feel like he was home all along, despite how long this journey took to have him reach here.

“Gaku… You’re going to mess up the tower–”

The white-haired scowled at his boyfriend who was giving him a grin that had nothing but malicious intent, “You actually want me to mess up, don’t you?!”

Yume jumped up and down, “Dad, c’mon! We need to kick our lego towers together and at the same time. I’m tired of waiting, I wanna go eat at grandma’s!”

It was once again a calm, summer evening when they decided to end the last few days of vacation they’d have together until each of them went back to their mundane responsibilities and as such. He wanted to savor every moment until that time arrived.

“You heard her, honey,” Yamato teased again, leaning closer towards Gaku’s ear so it would only be shared between the two of them. “Let’s tuck her right in so we can–”

“I’m right here!” Yume groaned, covering her ears. “That’s it, I’m kicking the legos all by myself so you two can be gross together!”

They two chuckled at their kid’s reaction, before each held onto her both hands and helped her swing right at it. That ended their plan for the remainder of the evening just as they decided to finally dress up and head out to the restaurant.

Not before Gaku followed Yamato right into their now shared bathroom and stole a kiss, which increased to two more kisses, to four, to six, to eight.

“... She’s going to actually get mad if we get too late, you know…”

“Not my fault you’re this irresistible…”

This time, it was Yamato who initiated a slow, wet kiss that was enough to set his soul ablaze. He nuzzled his nose on Yamato’s red cheek.

“It really can’t get better than this, you know.”

“What is?”

“This… What we have.” Gaku kissed Yamato softly again, “I’d want to show you off to the world that you’re mine to keep one day…”

The green-haired blushed, lowering his gaze. “Slow down. I’m not that young anymore.”

“That will never stop me from asking you. I hope you know that.”

“Tell you what, if you manage to get Yume to bed earlier than me, maybe I’ll let you ask despite the time frame. How about that?”

That deal got sealed with a kiss, just as Gaku held onto the ring in his pocket as he hugged Yamato closer. It had been a consistent bonding point between them, and the deals just kept on getting stacked very conveniently to their favour.

“Deal.”
