Work Text:
Blaise joining the mafia was one of the most stressful moments in Dazai's life. And he thought living was stressful! The joining went about as smooth as he thought it would. Blaise stood in front of Mori's desk with Dazai standing beside him. Mori spoke to Blaise respectfully, never once paying Dazai a glance.
“I'm assuming Dazai is willing to show you around.” Mori spoke, sending Dazai a look that would make Fred and George jealous of the telepathy. The look was meant to convey multiple things including threats of Blaise's safety, unhappiness in Dazai, and most of all a definite promise of punishment later. Dazai expected this, he didn't fear punishment if it would keep Blaise safe, but Mori didn't make that promise. So Dazai vowed to strike a deal with Mori to keep Blaise as safe as possible.
As they were walking out the door, Dazai sent a ‘we will talk later’ look to Mori and shut the door.
“Are you ready, Blaise, for your first time in the mafia!?” Dazai asked rhetorically.
“Ready as I'll ever be.” He replied. Dazai was being way too cheery. The whole way to Yokohama, he'd been quietly letting out nervous energy. When this happened, he couldn't help but think Dazai was up to something.
“You know,” Dazai started, “it's not too late to save yourself. You can leave right now and get back to Draco and Pansy and your family. I wouldn't blame you.”
Blaise sighed. Ever since he brought it up, Dazai had constantly been trying to get him to change his mind. “Then what would happen to you?”
Dazai stayed silent.
“Exactly. I already told you, Dazai. We're in this together and I'm not going to leave your side.” Blaise stated.
“But what about everyone back in England?”
“Do you want to know what my mother said when I told her I was going with you and would probably never see her again?” Blaise asked. “She said ‘Have fun'.”
“And Draco and Pansy?”
“I can send them letters.” Blaise suggested. “Will you let me stay by your side without complaint?”
“Blaise is so mean! He knows I can never say no to him.” Dazai pouted, hugging him.
“Yup. The meanest of all.” Blaise softly smiled, wrapping his arms around Dazai. “Now, aren't you supposed to show me around?”
“I suppose so…”
“Should I be suspicious?”
“Yes.” Dazai grinned, grabbing Blaise's tie and pulling him with him.
-
“You requested my presence, sir?” Dazai asked Mori. He knew why he was there, but he always did like to pretend he didn't. The boss’ office was empty of any guards, which only confirmed his suspicions.
“Yes, Dazai. Come stand beside me.” Mori demanded. “I've called you here to discuss your new dog you picked up at Hogwarts.”
“Blaise is very loyal.”
“Indeed he is. I'm curious; I was certain that I told you no one at Hogwarts should know about the Port Mafia. Tell me, Shuuji , why has a Hogwarts student, who isn't in the Malfoy family, joined our mafia?” Mori smiled at Dazai.
“Well, boss. I made the tactical decision to trust that my subordinate would be fit to join the Port Mafia.” Dazai lied. If he told Mori that he told Blaise because he was insufferably in love with him, he was sure Mori would have both him and Blaise killed. Mori's smile only grew, obviously he didn't believe that.
“And a good decision it was!” Mori fake cheered. “I applaud you Dazai! You went off on your own and recruited another member!”
Dazai let Mori speak, not believing his faux persona for a second.
“However, I do hope that you're willing to put your subordinate on missions that may be dangerous.” Mori smirked. “We can't have you getting attached.”
“Of course.” Dazai gritted his teeth.
“Although I may be willing to keep your friend out of danger, if you're willing to do something for me.”
“Like what?” Dazai swallowed. He knew what. He also should've known that he was going to get slapped.
“That was your first mistake, Shuuji.” Mori stood up and grabbed his face. “You did not deny your ‘subordinate’ was your friend. As you know, friendships aren't meant for the Port Mafia. Neither is lying to the boss.”
Dazai stared into Mori's eyes, unwavering. He was prepared for this, he just had to use other methods to get Mori to let it go. He brought his hand up to Mori's and pouted the way Mori always poured over.
“I'm sorry, Mori-san. Is there anything I can do to make you forgive me?” Dazai was internally throwing up. Suicide never looked better than it did now.
“Well I do have a new dress you could try on.” Mori chuckled. “Will you change into it for me?” He grabbed a dress from out of nowhere. That bastard was prepared.
Dazai apologized to Blaise for what he was about to do, and began to undress.
“It really is unfortunate you've grown so much!” Mori tutted.
-
Blaise had been in the Port Mafia for a few months now. Despite what Dazai had said, he hadn't been on any dangerous missions. The most dangerous mission he'd been on was a mission that involved investigating a group that was smuggling mafia weapons with Dazai. He felt that he was doing fairly well in the Port Mafia. He'd met a lot of members and even got along well with them. Not all of them knew English, but that was nothing a translation spell couldn't fix. Training wasn't too bad under Dazai, although he definitely felt Dazai could be a little hard.
So it was safe to say Blaise was content. He got to spend time with Dazai, occasionally sneaking into his room at night. Which brought him back to what he was doing right now. He was waiting for Dazai to return to his room. He had no idea where Dazai was, but he assumed he was discussing something with Mori. He was resting on Dazai's uncomfortable mattress, when he heard the door open and saw a light flood into the room. However, he wasn't prepared for the sight he saw.
“Dazai.” Blaise called calmly, trying to not startle Dazai. Dazai flinched. His leg was exposed, covered in bruises that didn't only look like bruises. His bandages on his arms were half heartedly put on, barely covering up his scars. His neck was covered in barely concealed bites and bruises and rope burns. Blaise almost broke down seeing Dazai in that state.
“B-Blaise!?” Dazai stuttered. No no no Blaise can't see me like this!
“Dazai. Did Mori do this to you?” Blaise asked gently.
Dazai nodded. Blaise held his breath. He was feeling so many things: anger, fear, guilt, concern, disgust, love, and most of all sorrow. Sorrow for this boy in front of him, who's never experienced anything other than suffering. A boy who was raised in the darkness and could not escape the darkness. The boy he loved. The boy he'd do anything for.
“Why…?” Blaise asked, not to anyone in particular. Maybe to Dazai, maybe to God, maybe to Mori, maybe to himself. Dazai was the only one to answer, finally letting out everything he'd been keeping from Blaise for months
“I made a deal with Mori that he'd keep you safe and away from extremely dangerous missions if I just listened to his requests. I'm so sorry Blaise! I'm disgusting.” Dazai kneeled in front of Blaise. However, Blaise just got on his knees to level with Dazai.
“Hey hey, it's okay. I'm here for you. You're not disgusting, Mori is. You just wanted to protect me,” Blaise held Dazai's face in his palms, “but I really don't want you to keep doing this. Please? I'll be okay on any mission because I have the best trainer. So please. Promise me you won't keep this up?”
“I-I..”
“Dazai.” Blaise called, his eyes sincere. “ Please , I love you. You know that.”
“I promise.” Dazai finally said. “And,” Dazai mumbled shyly, “I love you too.”
Blaise smiled and brought Dazai in for a hug. God I love this man.
-
Dazai called off the deal. He never felt more relief and dread at the same time, than he did after that. Not that it would stop Mori from doing what he wanted, but it did stop him from being part of the reason.
Intriguingly, Blaise's missions were becoming more frequent, but stayed relatively safe. He was even sent to be a diplomat for the D.O.E, which was gaining even more popularity. This was what bothered Dazai. He thought Mori would send Blaise on dangerous missions in retaliation, but Mori simply acted like nothing was wrong. Obviously, Mori was planning something.
Dazai's suspicions were confirmed one day when Mori told him he needed Blaise on the front lines of a war between the Port Mafia and another organization. If there was one place you didn't want to be, it was on the front lines of a war. Worst of all, Mori made it a rule that Blaise wasn't allowed to use magic because it'd “cause trouble” if any other organizations found out. Dazai knew Mori did this to decrease Blaise's chance of survival, but could say nothing. If he did, Mori would do worse.
So there he was, sending Blaise off on his mission, much to Dazai's dismay. Blaise was feeling neutral about the order. He wasn't particularly worried, especially when Dazai permitted him to use magic if he needed to. He also was a good shot.
Blaise also believed he had fast reflexes, until he got shot.
-
When Dazai heard the news that Blaise got shot he was pissed. He was also extremely concerned. It took all of his willpower not to choke Mori to death in order to get permission to visit Blaise. Of course Mori chose to be the one that “cared” for Blaise. Doesn't he have boss things to do?
“Blaise is very lucky to be alive. In fact, if he hadn't turned, the bullet would've hit a vital organ.” Mori smiled. “It's rather cute. His first words when he gained consciousness was your proclaimed name. I wonder, why is that?”
Dazai stiffened. “My subordinates are very loyal to me. They, what do you call it? Like me.” Dazai faked disgust. Mori hummed.
“Is Blaise in a romantic relationship with anyone?”
Shit. “No. Why do you ask?”
“Ah it's just, while I was making sure Blaise was stable, I stumbled across a few, hm, ‘love bites’ and I don't recall ever sending Blaise on a mission where obtaining those were required.” Mori smirked. “Tell me, Shuuji. Are you in love with Blaise or just using him for personal gain?”
Shit shit shit shit! They were in front of Blaise's curtain, he most definitely could hear them.
“I was unaware of any relationships Blaise would be in to obtain these ‘love bites’. If he is in any I will make it known that attachments are strictly prohibited in the Port Mafia. I will make sure Blaise is put in his place.”
“I'm sure you will.” Mori chuckled and trailed his finger across Dazai's jawline, before walking away. “If you'll excuse me, I've got some work to do, you're welcome to have a talk with Blaise.”
Dazai let out a relieved breath and immediately went to open the curtains.
“Are you okay!?” Dazai asked, closing the curtains and checking over Blaise. Blaise just laughed tiredly.
“I'm alright, Dazai. You look worse than I do.”
“Are you calling me ugly?”
“Never.”
“I thought so.” Dazai leaned in to give Blaise an almost desperate kiss. “I'm glad you survived.”
“Yeah. Me too.” Blaise smiled and pulled Dazai closer. Dazai moved his face to kiss Blaise's neck, deliberately not leaving any marks. “Scared of a few ‘love bites’ huh?” Blaise mocked.
“Terrified. You're lucky I'm a good liar.” Dazai admitted.
“Well I guess you better put me in my place because I don't think I can give those up.” Blaise flirted.
“Oh yeah? I guess I should,” Dazai smirked before leaning back away from Blaise, “buuuuut that'll have to wait till you recover.”
Blaise hummed, albeit a little disappointed.
He was worried about bringing up something that has been bothering him, but decided now was better now than never.
“Dazai. Why did Mori call you Shuuji?”
Dazai sighed, expecting the question. “That's my real name. Shuuji Tsushima, but I prefer to go by Dazai Osamu.” Having any connection to his vile father was the opposite of what he wanted.
“That's cool.” Blaise said.
“Really?”
“Yeah you got to pick your own name. That's a freedom few people have.”
“I've never thought of it like that.”
“Maybe you should.”
“Maybe I will from now on.”
-
Mori had been rushing Blaise's recovery. This was obvious to Blaise and was definitely obvious to Dazai. Dazai didn't spend all those years assisting Mori with his patients to not learn anything. Normal cases like these, the recovery time varied but was often around 5-7 weeks. So why the hell was Mori claiming Blaise was ready to go on his next mission after a week?
Blaise had noticed a few things. Mori had never once asked how he was feeling and definitely snuck extra sleeping medicine into his meals. He was sure it was to keep him from talking to Dazai as much as he could, but what he didn't expect was Dazai practically seething when he told him Mori was ready to send him on the next mission. He was aware the mission was basically a suicidal mission, the survival rate below 3%, but there was nothing he could do.
“I'm going to talk to Mori. Maybe I can convince him to send someone else.”
“And how will you do that?” Blaise asked, already knowing the answer. Dazai didn't respond, he only looked at him. “No. I won't let you do that again.”
“Blaise, you might die!”
“If you try to convince Mori to replace me on the mission, what do you think he'll do? He won't do anything better than what he's doing now.”
“But-”
“No. Would you rather me have a slim chance at survival or eventually none at all? Face it, there's nothing you can do.”
Dazai bit his lip. I shouldn’t have let Blaise join the Port Mafia. I should've tried to change his mind. This is all my fault.
“I know what you're thinking, Dazai. Remember when I said I'll do what I want? I still mean it. You wouldn't have changed my mind.”
Dazai looked away. “I'm leaving for a bit. I need to think. I'll see you off when it's time for your mission”
“Okay. I love you.”
Dazai only nodded and left the room, leaving Blaise with a heartache. He didn't mean to make Dazai angry. He didn't even know Dazai would be this angry over him being willing to sacrifice himself. If Dazai could do it, why couldn't he?
-
Once Dazai had left the room, he immediately asked to meet up with some important people. They were available to talk in private the next day, which brought Dazai to where he was now. Sitting at a small table surrounded by Kouyou and Hirotsu. They were very respectable individuals of the mafia and Dazai knew they wouldn't take any of Mori's shit.
“Why have you called us here, Dazai? I don't recall having a meeting set up by the boss.”
“He doesn't know.” Dazai said.
“Well then I must know why you've asked us to privately meet.”
“What will it take for you two to help me kill Mori?” Dazai bluntly asked.
Both stiffened a little.
“Should've known.” Dazai sighed. “Well let's start from the beginning.” Dazai proceeded to tell them of how Mori treated him and killed his father, who put him through even worse, to become the boss and then still treated him horribly. Describing his different training and punishments. When he was done, the two looked at him in shock. How could this boy, the demon prodigy, have gone through so much and never show it?
“W-Well if you could provide proof-” Hirotsu coughed out before being interrupted.
Dazai took off his coat and unwrapped his limbs. He hated every minute of it, but he had no other choice. “Though a lot of my scars are my own harm, the majority are from my father and Mori. You can tell by the different scarring. If that's not enough proof I've got access to the cameras in Mori's office-”
“That's alright. I've seen enough.” Kouyou said, gently. Slowly, she stood up, Hirotsu joining her. “So when are we killing this bastard?”
Dazai grinned. A true grin. “Tomorrow.”
-
Blaise was admittedly worried. Dazai had promised he'd come talk to him before his mission, but he hadn't seen him once since they're argument. He even asked around and Dazai was nowhere to be found. He couldn't help his thoughts spiraling into a territory he never wanted to think about. What if Dazai did something to himself because of me? What if he still went to Mori anyway and got himself punished? He was brought out of his thoughts by a hand on his shoulder.
“The boss requests your presence.”
Oh great. Blaise wondered why Mori would want to see him when he was about to go on a mission, but headed to his office without complaint. Could this have anything to do with Dazai's disappearance?
His question was answered when he knocked on the door and the voice that called him in was different from Mori's. A chill ran down his spine. What was going on?
Blaise entered the office and was greeted by the usual cleaned office, however there was a noticeable puddle nearby. Not only that, but the person sitting in the boss’ chair was…
“Dazai?” Blaide stared at Dazai. He had the red scarf that Mori always wore on.
“Ah Blaise! I'm sure you're wondering why you've been called into my office. Well to put it simple, you're not needed for this mission anymore.”
“That's… great, but that's not the only thing I'm wondering.”
“Oh! That puddle of blood? That was just remnants of the previous boss. He's… out of commission, but don't worry! Someone will clean it up eventually.” Dazai feigned innocence.
“Stop being so vague, Dazai.” Blaise was already right next to Dazai. “What is going on?”
“That's boss to you. Although that won't be any trouble, since you're used to that.”
“Dazai-”
“Fine, fine. I killed Mori with Hirotsu and Kouyou and now I'm the boss of the Port Mafia.” Dazai waved Blaise off.
“You killed Mori!?”
“Why are you so shocked? I've always talked about how I wanted to kill Mori.”
“But that isn't the reason you killed him, is it?” Blaise leaned to face Dazai.
“No. It isn't.” Dazai stood up to face Blaise.
“When you told me you'd kill someone for me, I should've known you were being serious.” Blaise put his hands on Dazai's waist and pulled him closer.
“I'm always serious, Blaise.” Dazai said, wrapping his arms around Blaise's neck. “Which brings me to my next question. Since I'm the boss now, there's a few changes I'll be making. I request that you be my second in command to help me fulfill these changes.”
“You don't even have to ask, boss. ” Blaise leaned to kiss Dazai. “By the way, this scarf looks alot better on you than it did on Mori.”
Dazai smirked and wrapped it around Blaise's neck to keep him close. “You too.”
“That reminds me.” Blaise said. “You owe me some ‘love bites’.”
“Don't forget that I'm the boss.”
“Of course, boss.”
They held each other close and kissed without fear for the first time. No more Mori. Dazai was really glad they decided to torture Mori in his office. It made their kiss all the more meaningful. Making out where Mori died. Awesome.
