Work Text:
Medic sighed, cradling the small seven-year-old in his arms, watching the two.
The man sighed angrily, shooting another glare at the woman.
The mother of the boy in his arms.
Medic looked at the boy, who clung to him, listening to the two argue as he spectated.
He finally had enough, and walked out, taking the boy away from his parents, who were starting to raise their voices.
"Why are mommy and daddy fighting..?" He asked softly.
"Shh..it's alright, I promise..they'll be okay."
The boy rested his head on Medic's chest, sighing.
"Everything will be okay. I will make sure of it. Let us play with your blocks, nein?" The man gestured to the wooden blocks, scattered in a small pile on the floor.
"Okay!" He beamed, climbing down from the man's arms, kneeling on the floor to start building his little block tower, the man soon joining him.
In the coming weeks, Medic found new and interesting ways to entertain his nephew, trying to keep him away from the grim reality that was his parents' marriage.
One time, Medic taught him how to stitch wounds together.
Another, Medic taught him about a well-balanced diet, and what to eat to grow properly.
There were many medical lessons given to him by Medic, and each was listened to with great interest.
CPR, what to do if someone was unconscious, how to keep someone alive if they were bleeding..he taught it all to fill the boy's gloomy days.
Then the boy's mother died.
Then the medical lessons stopped.
Because his uncle was gone.
The war had taken him away.
When they left Boston, he'd been so afraid. They were leaving his uncle behind.
He remembered his uncle kissing his hair softly, telling him not to worry.
That he'd be back.
Scout came back to the present.
He'd never seen his uncle again after they'd left Boston.
"What are you thinking about, Scout?" Medic's voice cut through his hazy thoughts.
"Hm? Oh, nothin' important. Just..someone I used ta know."
"..I see."
The boy watched the man smile at him.
The very same smile he'd seen when he was learning suturing all those years ago.
"Weird question."
"Go ahead! No question is ever too strange for me~! It is about my answers!"
"..Did ya..did ya ever have a nephew..?"
The man smiled again. "So you do remember me, Jeremy."
"..Uncle?"
"The one and only~!"
"I thought that- we left you in Boston! I thought that..you had gone away forever.."
"But I am here now, no?"
"Y-Yea-!" He smiled, and the man held out his arms for the boy.
Scout ran into Medic's arms, hugging him tightly.
Tears streamed down his cheeks. "I thought ya were gone forever.."
Medic embraced his nephew, whom he could now see properly due to the boy remembering.
"It's alright, Jeremy.."
Scout smiled happily, only too overjoyed to have his uncle back at long last.
"I missed you.."
"I missed you as well.."
As the boy embraced the doctor, it was as if the stars had aligned for him.
If only once.
Scout and Medic had lots to catch up on, and they knew it.
Medic had new medical procedures to teach Scout, while Scout had plenty of stories to tell Medic from his travels.
"I came back to you, just like I said."
