James woke slowly, breathing in the morning air. They forgot to close the window last night, he realized as he shifted under the blankets to retain the warmth. He’s always loved the smell of this bedroom and the morning air. It brought back pleasant memories of other trips he had taken to this cabin. There was a deep woodsy smell that permeated the whole house, putting him at ease. As he came to his senses, the warm presence pressed against his chest made itself known, and he was smiling before he even opened his eyes. He pulled his Love closer to him, instinctively kissing the back of their neck. There was an amused huff, and James knew that Ovi could feel his smile on their skin. Finally opening his eyes, he was greeted by his love’s form, skin practically glowing in the light of the sunrise.
God, they were so beautiful. And he could finally say they’re his.
“What time is it?” Ovi muttered, reaching for their phone.
“Don’t have to worry about that,” James said, voice gravelly with sleep. “We’re on our honeymoon.”
That didn’t deter Ovi, though, ever running on that internal schedule of theirs. They groaned when they saw the time, tossing the phone aside. “It’s, like, six-thirty,” they slurred before wiggling around in James’ arms to face him. “I don’t want to get up. Too tired.”
“You’re going to get hungry soon,” James commented.
“Am not.”
“The latest I’ve seen you have breakfast is seven-fifteen, my love,” James chuckled. “It’s part of your routine.”
Ovi whined quietly, burrowing into James’ neck more. “Routine can wait. Breakfast is always a finicky time anyway, I’ve got wiggle room. And you’re here.”
Over the years, Ovi had started trusting him more with their diabetes care. It was a natural progression in their relationship, but even then it took them being in a relationship for Ovi to start opening up about what it is they do. He knew the basics, they’d been friends since high school, but they never went into detail. They didn’t want to bother him with the logistics of everything. He’s glad he was able to change their mind, and that he can care for them better this way. Something about James being a support person in this way, while their family is far enough away to be of little help, put a sense of ease in him.
James’ thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Ovi’s stomach. James’ laugh rumbled through his chest, causing Ovi to smack at him lightheartedly.
“Why don’t I go start breakfast? That way, when you’re ready, we can eat right away?”
“But I want you to stay here,” Ovi complained.
“And I can’t have my partner starving,” James said, “We can relax after breakfast. Besides, you should probably eat something that isn’t fast food. That’s all you’ve had the last few days.”
“I was busy,” Ovi said.
“We both were,” James said. “Which is why I’m excited to have proper food. We could have bacon and eggs?”
“With toast? And fruit?” Ovi asked, considerably more alert now.
“The whole nine yards. And you,” He paused, kissing their forehead, “get to stay right here until it’s done.”
“I might be inclined to go along with this,” Ovi hummed. “If you pay the price.”
“Oh, is that so? And what price are we talking about this time?”
James knew what they wanted. It was the same game they’d been playing this whole time. He wanted them to say it, though.
Ovi paused for a beat before continuing, getting flustered once again. It was cute how they got like this, especially after how long they’d been together—and the fact that they were now married, James thought, feeling a giddy smile creep onto his face. “Kiss me?”
James’ grin widened, hands coming up to cup Ovi’s face, pressing their lips gently together. The sparks in his chest flew once again, making him feel breathless at just that small contact. It did not take long for Ovi’s hands to be in his hair, holding him in place.
“I will be in the kitchen,” James kissed their nose as he slipped away. Ovi groaned in response, burrowing under the blankets once more. James chuckled, shaking his head as he made his way through the cabin.
This cabin had been important to James since he was little, having been passed down through his family for generations—too many to keep track of properly, it was originally his great great great grandfather or along those lines. He would try to spend at least a few weeks here every year, usually opting for summer vacation and a few weeks around Christmas and New Year. There were many memories here that James cherished—including his proposal to Ovi. James couldn’t help the giddy smile that crossed his features at the memory.
James started on breakfast, happily going into autopilot as his mind wandered to the day before. This was one of James' favourite things to do. Especially if he was cooking for his love since they had a hard time getting any sort of proper nutrients in their body. Not to mention, James often liked to keep schedules, which benefits Ovi’s diabetes. It wasn’t necessary by any means, but they found that it helped to keep consistent eating times. They’d also been on this schedule since they were young after their diagnosis, so this wasn’t anything new. The second James found out about it, though, he was on board to help keep them on track. Anything to help them. James has heard enough laments about the constricts of their diabetes to know that managing it was their top priority. He also knew it was always the smallest thing that threw them off, and Ovi would comment on when they would be going into a Show Week for their job it always got messy. The late nights and suppers out of the house did not agree with their sugars.
While the bacon sizzled in the pan, James moved on to cutting up some fruit. It was a miracle that they could still have fresh fruit, with how often it gets forgotten, but it was a nice treat. James was pleased he remembered to pick some up when he was getting groceries for the cabin. It wasn’t much longer after he started that he heard the telltale noise of Ovi shuffling out of the room. James felt a smile creep onto his face, but other than that, he did not let on that he knew they were in the kitchen.
Arms slithered around his waist, holding on tight as Ovi leaned as close to James as possible. There was a sigh in his ear as they settled, lulling him into a false sense of security before a hand darted out and stole a slice of strawberry.
“Hey!” James chided.
“Good morning,” Ovi muttered, no doubly with a smirk adorning their face. “Thanks for the strawberry.”
“You stole that strawberry, thank you very much,” James said, pretending to sulk.
“Sugars,” Ovi said, before stealing another piece.
“Your sugars are fine,” James huffed.
“Mm, nuh uh,” Ovi shook their head, “I’m trending down. Probably gonna drop. Therefore—” They took one more.
James scoffed. “Okay, that’s enough. You will be fine until breakfast.”
Ovi groaned. “But it smells good now.”
“I thought you were going to stay in bed,” James said, changing the topic.
“You didn’t say good morning,” Ovi said. “And still haven’t, if you even care.”
James spun around in their arms to face them before giving them a soft kiss. “Good morning, my Flower,” James said.
“You only did that because I asked,” Ovi said, smirking.
“There’s no winning with you, is there?” James mused, pressing another kiss to their nose before returning to their breakfast.
“You love me,” Ovi said, snuggling into his back.
James couldn’t help but glance at the rings on their finger, a smile playing at the corner of his lips. “More than you know,” he said softly.
James could tell by the way that Ovi squeezed him that they were flustered by his words. James could have told you that before he even said them. It was a predictable thing about them, and one that he adored.
“I’ve got to make the eggs, Flower,” James said. “Would you mind sitting at the island until I’m done?”
Ovi groaned but did as they were asked.
“Can you be in my head then?” They asked quietly as they settled into the stool.
“Do you want me to be?” James asked sincerely.
“I do.”
James focused for a second, seeking out his love. It didn’t take long. After being connected most of the day yesterday, and being so close to them over the years, finding them was as easy as breathing. He felt their familiar presence, the comfort of them around him, and he smiled.
Then I can do that, James said to them. Anything for you.
Ovi giggled. I miss you.
I’m right here.
I still miss you, Ovi said, and he could see the eye roll they wanted to give him. I always miss you.
James was reminded of just how often they tell him that. He worked a lot. They don’t usually have as much time as he would like together. Ovi seemed to pick up on his line of thought and quickly corrected it.
I love you.
I love you too, James said. Love everything about you. So lucky that I get to call you mine for the rest of our lives.
I’m glad too.
Images of the day before filled their head, and James knew they were smiling at him. They were still glowing with happiness from that day. The reception, the ceremony. They loved that they got to marry him and that they got their family to come down for a few days. Ovi hadn’t seen them in forever. When James had been in their mind, there was an undercurrent of pure love that Ovi had in their head. For him, for their family, having everyone they cared about in one place to witness the happiest day of their life. They had always been family-oriented like that, and James was the luckiest guy to be a part of that. He’d do anything to relive that day.
Scrambled eggs?
You know me so well.
He did, of course, and James couldn’t wait to keep knowing them.
