The Griefs

Summary:

Me and my online siblings as gods

Work Text:

The gods, such powerful beings, ones that can control how high a kite flies, how big the waves are, how much rain pours down, all good things that humans praise them for. However, life for gods is just as unpredictable as life is for humans. Take the gods of grief as an example. Ray, Beans, and Moss, siblings of sorts. Each one a dommed creation, creations that not even the goddess mother could love. Moss, the god of depression, the symbol of the mentally ill and the manifestation of agony, is doomed to fall in love with the same mortal who's reincarnated with no memory every hundred years. Ray, the god of bargains, manifestation of a deal with death and the symbol of deals, who's doomed to kill their brother's love with a deal gone wrong and Beans, the oldest of the siblings. The god of pain, the symbol of denial, and the manifestation of injury. A god who is dommed to begin the chaos. To hand the knife to the murder, to cause death for the ruler of the dead. One that the three reluctantly call Father. God of the end, the light at the end of the tunnel, the grim reaper, call him whatever, and he'll still show up. He brings you comfort while you accept you're dead before harshly shoving you aside once you make peace with it. However, if you worshipped the siblings no matter how big or small the siblings' pets await you to bring you to your End. The pets can vary between cats, rodents, snakes, any animal humans deem horrid. Their pets lead you to the siblings who lead you to your End, the afterlife, whatever you call it. Young children and infants Ray shows up, and for the older ones, Beans shows up both to personally bring the child to the mother goddess. The mother goddess thanks the sibling, an unusual sight for the godly sibling. The sibling will nod back, and each gives the children a gift, whether that be a charm, some jewelry, or even a coin. It's said that Moss's lover, Chrysanthe, was one of these children, though the gods deny it every time. It would make sense for Ray's part of her repreated death. However, Ray's been known to be a trickster and god that twist words for both ends of the deal to be in their favor. Chrysanthe's death is considered a freak accident. However, most don't know how the gods are intertwined with her death. The siblings, specifically Ray and Moss, walk the mortal world under the disguise of two mortals. Ray, a florist named Angerona, and Moss as a musican named Deipylos. When Chrysanthe's, unknowingly, final birthday came around, Deipylos was already deeply in love. For months, he worked hard to show her he loved her, singing songs, writing poems, bringing her flowers before finally getting a yes from her. Unfortunately, Chrysanthe was already engaged. Her parents sold her off to whoever was willing to pay for her, but she had a plan. The day before her wedding, they'll meet, and Deipylos will take her away to the farthest town they can get to. Deipylos agreed to this and went straight to Angerona to tell them the great news. Angerona nods along while they work, giggling at their brother's attics until night came where Chrysanthe showed up.

"Ma'am, are you Angerona?" Angerona nods.

"What may I help you with? I may not be able to get you some flowers, but I can help."

"You're Ray." Angerona giggles.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Deipylos is Moss, isn't he?"

"Whatever are you talking about."

"I'll make you a deal. Kill my fiancé and I'll get you whatever you want." Angerona laughs before shaking their head.

"I don't do killing, but I can bring misfortune. Though I'll definitely need something in return."

"Name your price."

"You'll become a flower."

"What?"

"Your soul and body will become a flower once you die. Think of it as bringing Deipylos some happiness even when yiur dead. You'll also never tell anyone who Deipylos and I are. Got it?" Chrysanthe nods.

"Okay. Before I go, may I have your blessings?" Angerona laughs some more.

"You want my blessings? For what reason could you possibly want the bargain gods blessing?" Chrysanthe nods again.

"I wish to marry Deipylos. Once we're out of here and safe." Angerona pauses before thinking, then sighing.

"Fine. Come here." Chrysanthe gets closer to Angerona before Angerona puts a gold necklace with a rose charm around Chrysanthe's neck.

"You have my blessings. Now, don't make me regret it." Chrysanthe smiles widely before hugging Angerona and running off. Angerona waves her goodbye before Beans voice starts speaking.

"Ray, you gave your blessings." Ray sighs.

"I did. Moss likes her."

"She made a deal with you."

"She did."

"What was the deal?"

"Flowers for misfortune." Beans giggles.

"Misfortune? This will be fun." Beans voice dissappears, and Ray sighs. The morning before Chrysanthe wedding comes, and the two meet up at Angerona's flower shop to hide. Angerona kills all the flowers and closes the shop down before walking behind the counter and getting a splinter. Angerona plucks it out, spilling a few drops of ichor onto the counter thinking nothing of it. Chrysanthe and Deipylos come downstairs, and immediately Deipylos hugs Angerona, muttering a thank you. Angerona hugs back tightly before letting him go and patting his back.

"Be a good husband," Angerona then looks over Deipylos shoulder at Chrysanthe and says, "If he isn't, smack him." Chrysanthe chuckles before Deipylos shurgs Angerona's hand off of him. Chrysanthe leaves the room with the excuse of getting the rest of her stuff, leaving Angerona and Deipylos alone. Beans voice rings loud and clear throughout the room.

"Moss, have fun. Oh, and be careful. You know one prick could be the end of it." Beans voice leaves, and Ray can't help but feel like someone is messing with them. Before Ray and Moss have time to dwell on what Beans says, Chrysanthe comes downstairs with the two's bags in tow.

"Let's get going before sunset." Angerona nods before pushing the two out the door.

"Quickly now, the guards will be coming in a few minutes." Deipylos turns around before asking, "Will you come to us?" Angerona smiles and nods.

"Of course. Who's going to keep you out of trouble if I'm not there. Certainly not Chrysanthe. She'll only encourage you more." The two laugh before giving Angerona one last hug and walking away. A month later, Angerona gets a letter to visit the newly engaged in their new town. Angerona smiles at the letter before pricking their finger, ichor dropping at the counter. Angerona stares at it for a few moments before looking back at the letter, then running out of the shop and out of the town. When Angerona gets to the new town, they find Deipylos and Chrysanthe smiling happily in their garden, making Angerona sigh in relief.

"Deipylos." Deipylos lifts his head up before seeing Angerona and running to give Angerona a hug. Angerona hugs back before tightening their hug.

"Angerona?" Angerona tightens their hug once more, making Deipylos painc, "Angerona!" Finally, Angerona speaks, quietly almost like a whisper.

"I'm sorry." Deipylos pulls away before turning around just in time to see Chrysanthe fall, chrysanthemums stemming from her finger. Deipylos looks at Angerona.

"What the underworld?"

"This wasn't supposed to happen. Someone messed with the deal." Moss looks over at Ray.

"What deal?" Ray walks over to what's left of Chrysanthe and takes the gold necklace.

"She made a deal. I bring misfortune to her fiancé, her soul and body become flowers."

"Why flowers?"

"So you could see her when you walk the mortal plain." Moss looks at Chrysanthe.

"Oh." Ray nods.

"Beans messed with the deal."

"Why?"

"Chrysanthe never specified which fiancé."

"Oh. Does Father know?"

"I'm sure Father gave them permission."

"What should I do now?"

"I don't know."
