Work Text:

"Are we friends?"

"Mmm?"

L sat at his chair, Knees tucked just barely away from his chest as he tapped away on his computer; he did not need to look at Mello as the younger man addressed him, even if he did need to, he was not sure he would have.

"Are we friends." Mello said once more, taking a bite of his 9th chocolate bar of the day, a slight clicking sound emanating from were he bit. "You've adopted us, but are we friends?"

Near did not look up at Mello either, pushing his many toy cars down the plastic ramp, watching each one settle at the bottom. "Does it matter?" Near mumbled right after Mello. "L has adopted us, therefore that shows some form of interpersonal relationship, you could argue that he adopted us for his own gain- All three of us, no means for hyperbole, are completely unstoppable together. However, he could have always asked us to work with him if that was the case."

"I wasn't goddamn asking you, Near!" Mello shouted at him, L making a slight face at the noise directed at Near "Just answer the question, L." Mello huffed out, turning back to L "Are you friends with us."

A beat, then two.

"No."

Mello's eyes widened, fists and jaw clenching, Near looked up at L after the confession, however simple indifference remained his facial expression. "What the fuck do you mean by tha?!-"

L raised a hand to silence Mello, Mello's jaw snapped closed tightly. L's hands resumed at the computer, typing away before stilling.

"Friendship, noun, a relationship of mutual affection between people. It is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an "acquaintance" or an "association", such as a classmate, neighbor, coworker, or colleague." L said aloud, turning around in his chair to face Near and Mello.

"Now, I'd say we are far more close then simple colleagues or coworkers, yes?" He tilted his head, thumb on his bottom lip. "So no, you are not my friends; You are, however, much more."

Mello's eyes widened even farther, fists unclenching- "Tch." he tisked, turning his head away from L's gaze as he crossed his arms, shoulders shaking. Near simply struggled to crawl closer, limbs buckling at the motion, and resting his head on the edge of L's chair "I knew that you would say something like that." Near mumbled once more, L hummed, reaching down and idly carding his fingers through Near's hair.

"And I knew that you would." He said simply in response.

The only neat, untouched thing on L's desk was always, and would always, be a framed photograph of Mello and Near back when they still lived at Wammy's; Two messy, scrawled words written by L adorned the back.

"My Boys."
