Third Person POV
Gilbert and Cole had recently been exploring their relationship, they got together only a couple days ago, and they are not very sure what they are doing. Neither of them had ever been in a relationship before, and it was hard for them to even get into the one they are having now.
The two boys knew that if anyone found out about them, they’d get bullied and even worse, killed. It was illegal to be with someone of the same gender in Avonlea, as everyone believed of God and they always said that god hates the sin of being with the same gender. So, nobody dared disobey the law no matter if they didn’t like the opposite gender of them.
Anyways, the two men would talk sometimes I guess you could say, but mostly they would just ignore each other. To be honest, it wasn’t really like a relationship. But, behind the scenes, they’d have the best times of their lives. However one day, it stopped. Gilbert had stopped coming around, and he never spoke.
Nobody dared to check on him, not even Cole. He believed it would be too suspicious, and just decided he would check when it was about break time. Which was about in 1-2 weeks, those last weeks of school, everyone talked about Gilbert.
Nonstop, everything people said was about Gilbert. Everyone wondered what had happen to him, nobody knew and not many cared. Many just wanted to find out for their own curiosity, nobody actually cared really. It was mostly just Anne, Diana, Cole, ruby and moody that really cared. Mostly everyone else just shrugged it off.
Although, no one of the five even went to check. They mostly protected Gilbert's reputation, they’d fight and argue with those that talked bad about him. It was Cole half the time, he picked fights a lot, but he was mostly the one getting hurt and not the one beating someone up.
On the other side with Gilbert, he was on his last breath. The man had been very sick and sad for the past couple days and weeks. He thought he might as well just lay there, and let the pain take over, so he could finally have peace. The poor man barely had anyone, Bash and Mary were the only ones. Since none of his friends would even care to show up, Gilbert thought that he was just an awful friend to them.
Gilbert stayed intact though, he decided to not let it end just yet, since he can’t bear to see the pain on Mary or Bash’s face until they understand they are ready. Oh how Gilbert wished he wasn’t in this pain, and how he wished he could just live a normal life. However, I guess he couldn’t.
However on the last day of school, Gilbert had enough. The Pain was getting worse and worse, and he couldn’t take it anymore. He wrote his last goodbyes in letters, sending to Cole, Anne, Diana, Ruby, Moody, Bash, Mary, The Cuthberts and more. The people by his bed, about to watch him leave and have peace for once, were Mary and Bash. The two were crying a lot, but Gilbert assured them that it would be okay.
“Don’t cry, it’s okay. Live on, alright? Thank you. I love you guys, tell my friends I’m sorry and that I love them so much.” Gilbert told the couple, and they nodded quickly. As soon as that happened, Gilbert let the pain take over, as he passed away. He could see a light, and a hand reaching out, “It’s okay, come with us.” A voice said, and Gilbert traveled the voice, that’s when his heart stopped beating. That day, at 12:07 pm, the official date that Gilbert Blythe had left the world.
As soon as Mary and Bash realized Gilbert was gone, they fell to the floor, sobbing. They were going to miss Gilbert, as they wish he didn’t have this sickness. The next day, Cole arrived at Gilbert’s door, asking to see him. “He’s gone, why didn’t you visit him?!” Bash yelled, and Cole was stung to the heart. “What do you mean he’s gone?” The tremble in Cole’s voice was obvious, what did he mean? Was Gilbert really dead?
Bash explained the entire situation with Gilbert, and soon he just told the kid to go home. But before he did, he shoved the pack of letters that Gilbert wrote before he passed. As soon as Cole left, his heart had been left, shattered to pieces. He wasn’t fast enough, and it was his fault.
That night, Cole watched the stars, it reminded him of Gilbert. As the two men used to always watch the stars together when they hung out, it was Cole’s fault that Gilbert’s gone. It was his fault in their own stars, and he was never going to forgive himself for that.
