Vergilius has known for a while that this painting exists. He doesn't expect to see it appear in the briefing about the auction, but he's not surprised either. (Life has a way of circling back to pain.)
He remembers the scene vividly. He also knows that, even though it depicts an event, for all intent and purpose this is a portrait, one person only captured on the canvas.
It can help his goal. (It disgusts him.)
