Work Text:
Jeliel looked at the dirty child in front of her desk. She scrutinized his appearance, a basic hair, but a bit dirty. The boy wore a simple brown shirt, and small pants, both with visible wear and tear. It must have been something the boy’d been wearing for a long time.
She then looked at the number above his head, with her ability to see the value of all things. And it showed.. 10.
…Well, she can’t say she expected much from a poor looking boy like this.
“What do you want to buy, little boy?” Jeliel asked, with the mask of a smile she had been wearing the whole time.
“Um, the necklace.” The boy pointed up at the one propped up on a stand on the shelf next to her.
“Ah, this. You have the money of course, yes?” She asked the boy.
“Oh, yeah! Here, miss.” He said, pulling out enough bronze coins from his pocket to buy it, letting them fall onto the desk as he let go.
“Thank you, just be carefull, It’s owner will die in 7 days afterall.” She explained, as she accepted the money and handed the bracelet to the boy.
He joyfully took it, as he went outside without saying anything further. Honestly, it wasn’t even a true cursed object. He probably didn’t take it seriously, because he’s a child.
And even if he did.. well, it wasn’t her business to find out.
….But.. it should be fine to just follow the boy for a bit.
So she did so.
Jeliel followed the boy without him noticing, as he unknowingly led her to his home.
The boy went in, and closed the door. Jeliel inspected the house, and.. well, it didn’t look good. But that was as much as you’d expect from someone as low value as the boy.
Regardless, she went to the window, as she heard the voice of a man talking to the boy.
There was a man and the boy next to a sickly looking woman on a bed.
Jeliel looked at the sickly woman’s value, it was 5. She wasn’t sure if her value was just low like her child, or it was affected by her sickness that much.
“I’m sorry. Your mom won’t make it through the night.” The man said, seeming to be a doctor.
“Really?” He asked with a small frown, trying to be sure that the doctor couldn’t do anything.
“Really. I’m sorry kid. Her sickness just can’t be cured by someone on my level. I couldn’t give you enough money to hire someone that could if i tried.” The man explained in pity.
She looked at the doctors value. 100. It was okay, but clearly not good enough.
“...Okay.” The boy clenched the necklace in his hand, as the man shook his head, sighed and walked out of the room.
She silently watched, as the boy went over to his mother, and opened one of her hands, putting the bracelet in the unconscious woman’s hand.
He held her hand with both of his, as if in a prayer, as he closed with his eyes.
This scene.
……
Jeliel had a realization.
“Oh.” She said unconciously, as she felt her eyes feel watery.
“..Huh?” She wiped her eyes, and saw some.. tears.
…Why is she crying? The only emotions she’s held were vague ones pushed out towards her father being ‘love’....
…
Ah. Maybe that… was why.
