Work Text:
Sam had been a comms operator for 4 years now and was always very intuned with others emotions. He knew when his runners were toughing out pain; he knew when his friends were upset and, usually, could figure out why; he could see when someone was ready to snap and needed someone to unload on.
He’d always been like this, but it was still a bit of a shock how intuned he was to 5. Even with their ‘add water and watch it grow’ relationship and connecting interests; it sometimes struck him how weird that they’d gotten so close so quick. Sure, they’d been through a lot together, but Sam still found himself thinking about how…. Final(?) their relationship felt. Almost like they were supposed to meet and be together.
The only reason they needed to talk at all was because 5 was as stubborn as a zombie that sees tasty humans.
“Penny for your thoughts” she giggled, putting a pause on playing with Greg.
“Just thinking about us”
“What about us?”
Sam shrugged “how you don’t really need to tell me what’s on your mind, but I still wait for you to admit what’s wrong.”
“Well not everything in my mind is wrong” 5 pointed out.
“No but what’s on it now is weighing on your mind.”
“Yea. Well, what’s on my mind then?” she asked as she picked Greg up.
“Your sister”
5 just looked at him and he smiled, knowing he was right.
Veronica managed to get some files in her search for the sentient zombies, but ended up with an extra file that was lumped along with the others.
A file about a Genive Forloghn. Daughter of Francine Forloghn.
5s mother
The file was adoption papers saying that the family gave the child up because they ‘couldn’t care for their child.’ That really rubbed 5 the wrong way.
“I could never give Greg away. Not without a tooth and nail fight. The idea that my parents gave a child away but not me is… just….” The tears in her eyes said enough.
“You’re not the one that needs to apologize. There might not even need to have apologizes.” Sam assured.
“I know” she said, hugging her baby with tears welling up in her eyes.
Sam got up and snuggled his wife “We’ll find her. It says she was adopted by a rich English family. If she’s still around it shouldn’t be too hard to find her.”
Sam left it at that, but felt his wife smile and the air lighten.
He had a sneaking suspicion that 5 already had a good idea where to look.

“I just don’t get it” Veronica whined. “You are going to put all this effort for something with a good likelihood to be a waste of energy.”
“Anyone would think you cared about me by how much you go on about me finding my sister.” 5 told her.
That actually shut her up.
“So we’re just going to wait here, opposite a bus shelter?” The Builder asked, looking to get the mission back on track. After some back and forth (aka Steve flirting with Sam and 5 giggling at her hubbys obliviousness) a couple of zombies showed up…. carrying skateboards.
“This is amazing! I need to note this. Two S-types, one XX, one XY. I estimate age at death to be fifteen to eighteen years, and – goodness! The female just got on her skateboard!”
Sure enough the 2 zombies got on their skateboards and skated down the hill to the skating ramp.
“Ramps? Ugh, I can’t see. Something keeps switching off my cameras. Are they doing tricks?”
Janine answered the last bit but 5 was starting to zone in on the camera problem.
The 2 zombies, brother and sister eventually separated and 5 and Steve took off after the sister.
Where, surprise surprise (not)
“Hey Amelia! There’s no way is go”
“What makes you think I want a way out if you’re here?”
This results in a back and forth where it was relived that Amelia wanted to blow up the zombies so she ‘wouldn’t have competition.’ It was also clear the 2 had a relationship in the past.
She cut off their comms and started driving away when 5 shouted “Amelia are you adopted?”
She almost stalled the engine trying to hit the brakes too quickly.

Nobody except Veronica had anything to say about this entire thing (and Sam requested she not stick around) as they waited in the Med tent for the second test results. 5 insisted that they not even open the first test and get another one and Ameila agreed.
Sam had 5 in his lap, arms wrapped around her with a blank look on his face. Janine looked like the only reason she hadn’t shot someone was because 5 asked her not to. Maxine was in the lab and she was not having any mistakes made on this test while her wife tried to sooth her.
5 and Amelia simply stared at each other.
It can’t be possible…. Can it?
Maxine and Pauline finally came out with 2 files. They sat down and opened the folders together. They looked at both of them at the same time.
“Well there’s no mistake” Maxine said before she and Paula turned the papers. “You guys share exactly 50% DNA. The top of the needed percentage for siblings.”
Even Janine stopped cold at that.
“Oh my word this will not do”
5 didn’t have time to decide how she felt when Amelia finished her thought.
“Sam Yao, you are my married brother-in-law and you’re constantly in clothes that leave a lot of women wondering, and in front of your wife too. Honestly you need more sensible clothes yesterday.
5 tried to keep from giggling at her husbands confused face.

“Oh, look at those chubby legs and cheeks.” Ameila cooed as she tickled Gregs legs.
Greg just looked at her with a smile.
“Yep and he doesn’t even have Sam making his food.”
“Hey!!” Sam called from the other room as he tried out his new wardrobe.
“To be fair you look rather thin for someone with a 1 and a half month old.”
“I’m at a healthy weight” 5 mumbled.
“Healthy by whos standards”
5 didn’t answer that.
That set the tone for the rest of the day with her new sister.
