Chapter Text
Kiryu finishes up the pastries Sakura gave him before they make it to the cafe so they wouldn’t have to keep carrying around the bag.
When they open the door, the bell rings. As they step inside Sakura sees there are quite a few people inside. Some are lined up to order at the counter and other patrons are seated at booths or tables. It had simlar seating like the Muscle Power resturant but with more cute decorations. It had LED patterned lights on the walls blinking through colors to a rhymic pattern and a neon sign in cursive of the restaurants name.
“isn’t it cute!” Kiryu snaps a picture of the sign and the lights.
Sakura hums, not wanting to answer that. He sees a lot of flowers around. Placed near the entrance, a flower wall near the counter and flowers placed on all the tables. Damn. And speaking of flowers...
Should he have gotten Kiryu flowers? Sakura realized it was date and besides that pastries, Sakura didn’t get him anything. But Kiryu didn't either. Was he really fine with it?
“Where do you want to sit Sakura-chan?”
“Don’t care.” He moves a little closer to Kiryu when someone almost brushes past his arm. If Kiryu notices he doesn’t say anything.
“We can sit in the booth next to each other. That way we can share food and cuddle up toget-“
“Table is good.” Sakura doesn’t let him finish, and he makes a bee line for an open table. Two chairs on opposite sides.
“Hmph you’re no fun.” Kiryu sits down across from him.
“Not trying to be.”
“Grumpy Sakura-chan.”
“LIterally do not care.”
“I think you’re cute when you’re grumpy.” Kiryu finishes easily, words rolling off his tongue as if it doesn’t makes Sakura scream internally.
Sakura’s face flushes and he tries to keep his eyes trained out the window watching people walking by. Kiryu is the most infuriating person he has met since he got to Makochi. Mostly because he teases him relentlessly. And Sakura can’t even be mad because that teasing was all in good fun. Not malicious in nature. Only from affection.
It’d be easier if it wasn’t. If no one was actually nice to him.
A waitress comes up to their table, handing them menu’s and saying to let her know when they are ready to order.
“What are you going to get Sakura-chan?”
Sakura’s eyes scan over the menu. The items all sounded sugary or like breakfast foods.
“Do they have omurice or something like that? I don’t want a bunch of sugar.”
“Uh they have curry.”
“Cool. I’ll get that. And I guess a ginger drink.”
“I want this limited drink! It’s a coffee latte with a donut on top!”
Sakura scrunches his nose. “That sounds disgusting.”
“Ah it sounds super sweet, but I bet it’s super good!” Kiryu smiles and Sakura looks away, studying the menu.
“Pick something else less sweet. This is like a lunch thing we're doing more then breakfast.”
“Aww you’re worried about if I’m eating healthy.”
“N-N-No.” Sakura bristled. “I just don’t want you to vomit on me if you eat too much!”
Kiryu sends him a pointed look that captures Sakura’s attention, trapping him, as if he sees right into his mind. Kiryu was a weird guy, but he could also be terrifying in his own way too. When he got quiet, calculating almost. Sakura throat bopped as he swallowed. Heart stuck in his throat.
But his boyfriend spared him and just grinned. “Well I know my Sakura-chan would take care of me.”
When he says it his voice doesn’t match his face. It’s a soft grin, but his voice is low. Almost sounding as if coated in honey. Sakura realizes the stare wasn’t to intimidate him. It was a stare like Kiryu was trying to read him and was fascinated by what he saw. Sakura’s going to faint at this point from how hot he feels.
“I’m leaving you at the hospital at best.” Sakura tries to keep his voice levelled when it wants to spike.
When their food arrives Sakura focuses on eating. Pointedly ignoring the glee coming from his boyfriend who was taking pictures of his coffee latte donut concoction.
"Can you just eat?"
"I got to take pictures first." Was all he offered.
Sakura didn't question why and Kiryu did start to focus on his drink when he put his phone in his pocket. He takes a bite of the dount and when he sees his green eyes lit up Sakura tries to cover the smile forming on his face with his hand.
"You look like you like it."
"Kiryu nods, before holding the donut out for Sakura. "Try some!"
Sakura unsure what to do, looks between the bitten part of the donut and Kiryu's encouraging face, urging him to bite it. He takes a bite, where Kiryu bit into and munches for a few seconds before swallowing. Sakura's own eyes lit up.
"Not bad." He tries to cover up how much he liked the strawberry flavor.
Kiryu chuckles before biting into the donut again. After he swallows he hums, smile forming on his face. "Didn't think you'd bite it right out of my hand. I thought you were going to grab it."
Oh.
Oh Fuck.
Sakura was so distracted he didn't realize he ate the donut like that. And Kiryu is enjoying every second of it.
"Also..." Kiryu starts, seconds from bursting out into a fit of giggles. "We just shared an indirect kiss."
"What are you going on about?" Sakura questions.
"You bit the same part of the donut as me. Therefore your lips touched where my lips were." Kiryu darts his tongue out playfully.
Sakura stares at him mortified and just shoves more curry into his mouth because he literally can't think of anything else to say. Kiryu's laughing doesn't help.
"Stop laughing at me!" Sakura hisses, not trying to draw attention to himself. But Kiryu was doing that all on his own by laughing hysterically.
"I'm sorry. Sorry!" He wipes at his eyes, calming down. "You're too precious Sakura!"
Sakura takes his spoon out his mouth scooping up some more curry. He points it at Kiryu accusingly. "You're just trying to stir shit-"
And Kiryu leans over and takes the spoon into his mouth.
Sakura freezes as Kiryu stares at him.
"Up..."
Kiryu pulls back and chews the food in his mouth.
"You're actually a demon you know that, right?"
Kiryu almost chokes on his food as he goes into another laughing fit.
⚘⚘⚘
They stay almost an hour, before Sakura and Kiryu leave to go wander around for a bit. Kiryu settles next to him, talking his ear off and holding his forearm. Sakura let's him. As embarrassed as he feels, Sakura lets Kiryu lead him around.
He really had it bad.
Sakura dares a peek at Kiryu, who is looking ahead, mouth moving. Talking about something Sakura doesn't know. A new trend. Something around town. He isn't sure. All he knows is he is hyper aware how pretty Kiryu is. And he ended up getting such a pretty person to date him.
Sakura feels a small part of him kind of happy at that. Proud of himself. For even opening up to someone like this. But the bigger voice that breaks through is tell him it won't last. That Kiryu will get bored or realizes that Sakura is worthless.
Sakura doesn't get why Kiryu doesn't see he can do so much better than him.
"Woah look at that dude."
"Is that his actual hair color?"
"Man if I looked freaky like that I'd fucking go hide."
Sakura keeps his eyes trained forward. They were walking past an alley and he started to hear voices. No doubt some punks just lurking in there. Sakura only really paid attention to them when they spoke up. It's whatever. He's used to that. That's more familiar than whatever has been happening since he moved here. There are a lot of people that are nice to him, but then he'll get these random assholes saying shit. Would it be weird to say that feels more normal to him than Kiryu liking him or Nirei, Kotoha and the others treating him kindly.
Sakura's so deep in thought he almost misses Kiryu holding onto his arm a little tighter before he eventually let's go and walks off. Did he get embarrassed because of what those guys said? Maybe he realized Sakura is a freak. And for some reason that guts Sakura more than anything.
"Hey!"
Sakura looks back and sees Kiryu's gone, but he still hears his voice. Sakura looks down the alley and sees those same guys standing now in front of Kiryu.
"What the fuck do you want pinky?"
"That's not that creative." Kiryu shrugs. "But you seem to be the type of brute to come up with unoriginal nicknames anyway."
"Whatcha call me?"
"Oh sorry thought you were into harrassing people. Guess it's different when someone calls you out."
The guy walks closer until he's standing in front of Kiryu. He's taller atleast 180 cm. He grins likely already underestimating them. Sakura walks in further, already seeing where this is going to go. He doesn't mind a fight, however he didn't want it to be over something stupid. Kiryu doesn't have to defend him.
"You looking for a fight green eyes?"
"Not at first, but you brought it on yourself."
"Huh?"
Kiryu points behind him. “That's my boyfriend you just insulted.”
“Boyfriend?” The guy looks up his eyes meeting Sakura's before Sakura looks away. “Ah I get it. Your boyfriend.”
“What? Got something else to say?” Kiryu keeps egging him on. Sakura can already tell from the air around them what's going to happen next.
“Not a thing.” Sakura balls his fists next to him. Even though he's not looking he can feel the guy watching him. “Well maybe one thing? Some advice green eyes. Might've wanted to go for someone half-way decent looking if you gotta take it up-
If Sakura wasn’t use to watching fighting and if he blinked it he would’ve missed because the moment he looks up is the exact moment Kiryu punched that guy and sent him flying into trashcans.
Kiryu remains calm even when the rest of the gang leader's crew start circling Sakrua and Kiryu.
“I was trying to have a nice day with my sweetheart and you guys are ruining my date.”
“Stop with the fucking pet names already!" Sakura finally snaps out of whatever the hell was going on with him. Discomfort. Insecurity. Fuck it all! He's got to focus on the one thing he's good at.
“But Sakura-chan I want to try out different ones. Is sweetheart not a good one?"
“Quit talking and beat their asses already we're in the middle of a fight!”
“Wahh I already punched one so you gotta protect me now!"
Sakura groans, but goes to stand next to Kiryuu. When a guy with sunglasses charges forward, Sakura punches him across the face and knees runs forward to kick one with multi dyed hair in the stomach.
Sakura halts when the guy with tattoos goes charging at him with a pipe.
“Sakura-chan! Duck!”
Sakura ducks and at that moment he feels a pressure on his back. He glances up to see Kiryu’s leg kicked out and the guy with tattoos on his face goes flying.
Kiryu lands firmly on the ground and Sakura stands up again.
“Damn warn a guy next time. You stepped on my back!” Sakura tries to brush off what he could reach of his upper shoulders.
“Sorry it was the quickest way to stop him.” Kiryu winked, not at all ashamed. However, he does come over to help dust off Sakura’s back. “Plus I protected you twice now. I really spoil my angel.”
Sakura rolls his eyes, but his face his red as a tomato. “Whatever. And don't call me angel.”
They look around and see the bodies lying around in the alley.
“Wanna book it before they wake up?”
“Yes please!” Kiryu grabs Sakura’s forearm and interlocks his arm with his. “Don't worry I'll find a pet name that works. What about my dove?"
“No and please stop trying."
Before Sakura can say anything else, Kiryu halts and it also makes Sakura stop moving too.
“Hold on a second Sakura-chan.”
Kiryu lets go and Sakura watches confused as he walks over and squats down in front of the body of the leader.
Sakura swallows. He’s the one who made that comment from before.
Sakura’s not one to get that nervous or bat an eye in front of people usually. To show he’s intimidated by anyone. Even though it’s happened. He’s been caught off guard. It’s dumb to lie about it.
So he’s honest with himself that he’s shocked when Kiryu picks the guy up by his hair and gets close to his face.
“Guys like you make me sick. Who push their weight and harrass people. Here's some advice for you now. Stop shit talking people and if you show your face around me and my boyfriend again, you'll be the one that doesn't look half-way decent.”
The guy probably didn't even hear him since he looked unconcious, but Kiryu drops him like he’s throwing a sack on the ground.
Sakura only saw the back of Kiryu's head while he said that, so he can only imagine how his face must've looked.
Kiryu hmphs and goes back to Sakura, his usual smile on his face, albeit the corners of his mouth a little more taut. He interlocks their arms again and pulls him along.
“Where do you want to go next Sakura-chan?”
“Uh…let’s just walk for a bit.”
“Okay~”
Kiryu didn't let go this time.
⚘⚘⚘
Their adventure after the fight led them to going to a movie. It’s kind of awkward standing there, with Kiryu looking at what movies are playing and Sakura pretending like he didn’t see another side to Kiryu in the alley.
It kind of sent a shiver down his spine. Even though he confessed to him, Sakura doesn’t know everything about him. Even the other faces of what makes him him.
He’s kind of ashamed he just realized this.
“Sakura-chan? Sakura-chan?”
“Huh?”
“I asked if you cared what movie we watch?"
“Oh uh, nothing romantic. Maybe action?”
“Okay.” Kiryu nods, but his eyes linger on him. “Are you okay though? You seem like you’re spacing out.”
"I'm...fine. I just don't get why you wanted to fight those guys."
"I'm surprised Sakura-chan. I thought you were always up for a fight?"
"I am but not when I'm the reason..."
“Sakura-chan they said something horrible about you. I'm not letting that slide."
Sakura wants to say he wish he would. that Kiryu's been nothing but kind to him and he's still confused why he agreed to date him. Especially because that guy was an asshole, but he was right. The way sakura looks-
His thoughts halt as Kiryu takes his hand, interlocking their fingers and raising Sakura's hands up to his mouth to give a kiss to each of his knuckles. Sakura remains frozen, staring in horror that he didn't pull away his hand until his brain caught up.
"WHA-WHA-WHAT ARE YOU-"
“You're thinking too hard. I can see the frown lines between your brows."
Sakura looks around making sure no one saw but everyone is in their own world and most people were getting tickets or snacks. They were the only ones standing near movie posters trying to decide on a movie.
“What if someone saw?!"
Kiryu has a slight frown. “Would that bother you?"
“No it's..."
“It's not because of what that guy said, is it? I know some people will talk I get it..."
“Yeah I figured I was going to hear it at least once today."
“So no PDA then?"
“PDA?"
“You know - public display of affection?"
Sakura gapes, face hot. “What the hell are you talking about that for?!!"
“I thought you were uncomfortable because we're two guys. That's what pissed you off about what that guy said, right?"
“No that's not it. I mean I've thought about it, but I've been talked about before anyway so it's whatever.” Sakura keeps talking when he sees Kiryu look like he wants to interject. “I thought you meant about that guy talking about my appearance. Like if you'll be with me people will wonder what that cute guy is doing with a....a freak..."
Sakura feels Kiryu's hands on either side of his face, before he looks up.
"Sakura-chan...." He says his name carefully. Sakura hesitates looking up. "Sakura-chan please look at me..."
Sakura does and is met with a gentle gaze and a quick peck on his cheek by Kiryu.
"Don't worry about that stuff. I'm going to date you no matter what anyone says. As long as you want me to. And if anyone calls you something horrible like that again I'll just beat them up."
"You're..." Sakura was going to say he was dumb thinking that. He can't possibly be sure how he'll feel after a few months, a year of dating Sakura. That he can just beat everyone one up that talks ill of him. That'd be a lot of people to beat up then. But Sakura can't the words out.
Kiryu doesn't seem to mind, he just lowers his hands and grabs Sakura's hand pulling him over to get their tickets.
They settle on an action movie. Explosions and fighting scenes ironically calm Sakura down as he stares at the screen. Grinning and letting out small chuckles at funny dialogue and over the top acting. But the fight earlier still lingers in his mind. He's got to forget about it already. It already happened. Can't change it.
Another explosion happens and a high speed chase starts. Sakura feels Kiryu's hand settle atop his as the movie plays. Sakura bristles, holding his breath. Neither of the two boys dare to move even as a scream happens in the film and gunshots. Sakura dares a peek over to look at Kiryu's face. He's staring at the screen, half his face illuminated.
Kiryu's hand finally tightens around Sakura's and moves their hands so their fingers interlace. They are just holding hands. In a somewhat full theater. Sakura gulps, looking from their joined hands back to Kiryu who is looking at him now.
Kiryu leans in cupping his hand over his mouth, to whisper in Sakura's ear.
"Are you enjoying the movie?" Kiryu asks.
Sakura nods his head. He can't think of anything. He can't say anything. His thoughts aren't even on the fight from earlier and the rude comments from those group of guys anymore. It's on Kiryu's breath fanning near his face, how good he smells and how soft his hands are despite him always fighting.
"Good I'm glad."
Sakura's not going to make it to the end of this date.
What a way to go though.
