Work Text:
Kageyama is at the mall staring at —in his personal opinion— kind of a really dumb looking hoodie.
It’s not ridiculously dumb, but it’s not anything Kageyama would ever wear. Hinata on the other hand, Kageyama thinks picking up the hoodie, would . He definitely would. It’s dumb in the same way he calls Hinata a dumbass constantly , it’s not like he thinks Shoyo is dumb to a serious degree —not that Tobio can really talk.
It’s more like when Hinata’s so stupid Kageyama looks at him like he’s an idiot, cause he is, but he’s Kageyama’s dumb idiot, and he can't help but be fond of it — usually anyway.
The hoodie is dumb like that kind of dumb, it’s a more blue than green shade of teal, and has a kind of simplistic cartoonish sun printed on it. Hinata will love it, and wear it and Kageyama will think he looks ridiculous in it, and love him all the more for it.
It’s kind of perfect.
He feels himself smile a little, before making his way out to pay.
He leaves the store after paying, putting the bag with the hoodie inside, his two-strapped backpack, folding it down so he still has room, and his bag isn't bulky, which Hinata could notice, before sliding it on his back, and sitting on a bench pulling out his phone.

on ur left.
Hinata looks over sharply to his left and sees him on the bench quickly making his way over.
“Have you been here long? I’m not late, am I?” He asks, frowning, glancing at his phone again.
Kageyama immediately shakes his head no softly, looking over at Hinata, “no I got here a bit early, I was just looking around smelling the food.” He says lamely, he doesn’t like lying to Hinata but this is for the sake of a surprise.
Shoyo laughs looking over at him, buying it easily. “Sounds like you.”
He shrugs, “I’m hungry.”
“Of course you are. I am too, should we go eat then?”
“Do you even have to ask?” He offers back, unconsciously throwing a small quirk of his lips over at the orange haired boy.
Hinata laughs brightly.
The sweatshirt was a good choice.
Hinata was panicking, not full blown stomach cramping , potentially about to throw up panicking.
But he was stressed, and kind of freaking out, because Valentine’s day was around the corner.
And Hinata has zero ideas.
He wants to do something nice for Tobio because god does his amazing, actually probably the best, boyfriend deserves it, he’s so sweet, and really Hinata just loves him a lot.
But he’s the worst at planning almost anything .
He’s very much the type of person to shove all his clothes in a duffle bag and call it packing, pretty much the same with his backpack really.
Any moment of —debatable by Tsukishima’s standards— brilliance is normally thought of on the spot, and last minute or entirely accidental.
But Hinata refuses, absolutely rejects, the idea of waiting until the last minute to get Kageyama something, super late carelessly and calling it a day. Not this time.
Even if his boyfriend doesn’t give him anything back, because he might not for all Hinata knows, maybe Kageyama’s planning something too, or maybe not.
And while typically anyone else would look at Kageyama and sick their noses up and say Kageyama wouldn’t give a frick about Valentine’s day, too focused on volleyball and what not, Hinata knows better.
Hinata likes to think he knows Kageyama better than pretty much anyone.
He hopes so anyway, he wants to be Kageyama’s special, most important person, especially because Tobio is his.
Kageyama kind of reminds him of a time when they were in class and their teacher was showing them origami —fancy paper folding that Hinata has way too sweaty, clumsy fingers for— basics and folded a paper in half all sharp and pointy, in a strict and careful sort of way.
Kageyama had nailed it on the first try that day.
And it’s not because Tobio’s all sharp and pointy with straight lines that he reminds him of the origami stuff, but because it’s pretty and takes careful hands to do it.
Tobio’s very thoughtful about the things he cares about, he’s seen the way he packs his overnight bags, it’s the complete opposite of Hinata, he lays out all his clothes, folds it so it all fits just right in the bag.
The way he takes care of his hands, like those people who take really good care of their cars, it’s kind of like that.
Kageyama’s uniform is never wrinkled or messy when he shows up to school, unlike himself, who has shown up way too many times with his t-shirt half untucked.
Kageyama thinks about a lot of things, despite Tsukishima's —and a lot of other people’s— opinions.
Kageyama does his laundry all fancy by separating it, —which Hinata didn’t even know was a thing until he asked his mom about it.
Kageyama’s really considerate about the things he cares about, and Hianta is one of those things that Kageyama cares about, so maybe just maybe.
Tobio could be planning something too.
Which was all the more reason to make sure he gets him something amazing, he refuses to one, be a crappy boyfriend and show up with a dumb gift, or even worse no gift.
And number two, be outdone. Hinata is nothing if not competitive, and a worthy opponent in most people’s but also more importantly Tobio’s eyes.
So he’s at the mall with his mom, and his sister, with ¥3000 in his pocket, after begging his mom to go to the mall.
“Shoyo honey, you went to the Mall not even that long ago, why do you need to go again?”
Which was true. He had gone to the Mall with Kgaeyama but he couldn’t buy his boyfriend a gift with him right there.
So here he is again, three days later, with hopes that he’ll find at least something decently thoughtful.
Kageyama’s so thoughtful, and Hinata just wants to be the one with a plan for once, and not screw this up.
And he does have one kind of, maybe.
So after bidding his mom and sister a temporary goodbye, while they go shop for themselves, he starts walking through the mall, looking through the glass in every store.
He sees so many things, none of which seem like the one.
He walks and walks , until he comes to a store that just might have some sort of what he’s looking for, so he pushes the door open, bell ringing above his head and immediately starts searching for blue, and soft.
The idea is to get him something he can wear, or maybe even just a blanket , a scarf , a jacket, he has no idea but it has to be soft , because Hinata has a hunch Kageyama likes things that feel nice.
It might be a small, and Hinata’s deluding himself hunch , but it’s something.
He remembers the day he’d touched that beige pullover Kageyama always seemed to throw on, and while he wasn’t expecting it to be rough or anything, it was soft, like softer than soft, like fuzzy but without all the messy fabric lint stuff.
And the day he’d gone over to Kageyama’s house and he’d laid down with him to sleep next to each other, his blanket comforter was ridiculously (not in a bad way just kind of unbelievable way) nice feeling, and Hinata had half wanted to ask where he got it.
So it’s a hunch , and the blue is because Hinata had one time accidentally blurted out to his mom that he thought his boyfriend looked prettiest in blue, and she’d only laughed and said that made sense, something about skin tones and bringing out his eyes, which only furthered solidified it.
Even the universe or and rules of fashion or whatever thought Kageyama was made for blue.
So blue, soft and something that screamed ‘I care’ was his semi thought out idea of a gift right now, as he searched the store slowly.
He looked around anxiously, feeling less and less confident, when he groaned and looked up annoyed at his idea when- there, up there.
He spotted it.
Holy-
It was perfect. Kageyama would love it. He’d absolutely love it, he thought, rushing over to the aisle, he glanced around cautiously before deciding to just hopefully jump and grab it.
He’s so glad he looked up, he backed up a little, jumped —and got it.
It was perfect, it had blue, it looked soft, and better, there was a cute milk carton guy on it. Kageyama loved milk .
Hinata didn’t get it, but he still thought it was cute.
He reached out touching on both sides to make sure, and yes the blanket felt so soft. It had a blue and white milk carton on it. The pattern, he realized, was kind of cutesy but he didn’t think Kageyama would mind too much —hopefully. Afterall silly stuff was usually more Hinata’s style.
He pays quickly, making his way out of the store with his other destination in mind.
Now all he needs is a bag, and maybe some sort of card, nothing over the top, just something simple, he heads into another store much quicker, finding a gift shop decorated for the holiday.
He scans the gift bags, and after some thought. grabs a white one, thinking it’s a good fit because it’s not bright red , like all the other ones, and it’ll match what’s inside. The white and blue gift.
He moves to the other aisle quickly before skidding to a stop when he spots the crinkly paper stuff you’re supposed to put inside and grabs a small pack of blue. Gifts alway have this stuff inside for whatever reason.
He’s being so- organized, Kageyama’s gonna love this, he smiles giddily, making his way over to the cards.
Alright nothing too sappy, just maybe something sweet and then something he can write his own little message in.
He scans the cards up and down, before picking out a few and looking at the fronts first to compare. He settles on a few looking for one that’s not glittery and more plain looking but still has a little border that's fancy.
Then he checks the insides to see which will work the best before immediately deciding on one that’s beyond perfect. If Tsukishima were here he’d probably have the word for it.
Something like fate maybe.
He makes his way out paying quickly and calls his mom from his phone.
Hinata’s so gonna win a smile from Kageyama.
Hinata bikes along the slightly becoming more familiar every time he comes over, path to Kageyama’s house, as he makes the second to last turn at an intersection.
He has the gift in his backpack, which he emptied out, so the gift bag doesn’t get squished before very carefully putting it in and a second older backpack from middle school used as an overnight bag, on his back.
The gift isn’t heavy so the two bags aren’t too difficult to ride with, peddling as he gets closer and closer to his boyfriend’s house.
He makes the final turn and rides less than halfway up the street, before stopping and walking his bike to lean against the side of the house and ringing the doorbell, both bags thrown over his shoulder resting on his back.
Tobio opens the door instantly.
“Hi.” He says to Kageyama kind of breathless, even though he wasn’t peddling that fast. He’s not surprised Tobio has been rendering him breathless since that fateful day he first walked by in that blue and white uniform, scowl and all. He’d look so cool back then.
Then Hinata found out what a dork he is.
Nothing and everything’s changed.
He still thinks Kagyama is so cool.
“Hey.” Tobio answers back, before stepping away from the door to let him in, a smile already curving at his lips.
“You hungry?” He asks.
“Yeah.” He answers honestly, “but I kind of uh- I want-“
He doubts he’d be able to keep his food down if Kageyama doesn’t open his gift first, he’d rather get it over with now then sit through a whole dinner stressing about whether or not it’s a good enough gift or not.
Kageyama glances over at him, brow furrowing, tilting his head barely, “you want?”
“I want to give you something first.” He blurts out.
Kageyama blinks at him, dumbfounded, before a shy smile takes over his face, “yeah?”
“Yeah.” Hinata smiles back answering.
“Me too.” Kageyama gestures for Hinata to follow him to his room.
Hinata smiles. He knew it. He knew his boyfriend so well. Kageyama really is amazing , he thinks happy.
“Okay you first then.” He says giddy.
“Alright.” Kageyama agrees, easily.
He grabs the red bag he’d put the hoodie in, from his closet quickly, and sets it on his bed, setting it on the bed next to him.
Hinata drops one of his bags on the floor by the door and makes his way to sit on the bed too, bringing one of his backpacks to the bed with him.
Hinata takes the bag easily, looking over and smiling at him.
“Go ahead, open it dummy,” he gestures nervously.
Hinata shoots him a look rolling his eyes fondly, before reaching into the bag past the white tissue paper, and pulling out the card first, he hesitates opening it, before turning to him.
“Can you do it?”
“What,” he questions.
“Can you open it, you always do it so carefully if I open it, it’ll be all messy and ripped,” he explains kind of shyly.
Kageyama blinks, kind of stunned, his heart thudding, before taking the card and opens the card, with careful practice before handing it back to Hinata. He loves this idiot so much.
“Thank you.” He beams over at him.
“You haven’t even read the card.” He says scoffing, a smile on his face.
“I know.”
Shoyo opens the card, pulls it from the now opened envelope and holds it in his hands lightly, gently even, before reading it, what is meant to be silently is really under his breath, quietly mumbling.
His eyes crinkle at the sides as his smile grows bigger by the second.
His eyes gloss over suddenly, and he laughs wetly looking up from reading the inside.
“I love you too.”
Kageyama glances down, and shrugs not knowing what to say, reaching to grab Shoyo’s hand and squeezing it lightly.
He smiles, one of those softer smiles, one that isn’t meant for people, but for Tobio smiles.
Fuck.
Hinata turns back to the bag, and reaches in again, before pulling out the folded hoodie, letting it fall open as he turns it to face him and looking at it before giggling.
“I love it!” He smiles toothily at Kageyama.
Kageyama’s stomach swirls hot and heavy. He doesn’t know what to do about it except feel it for what it is, fondness, affection, love.
If thirteen-year-old-him could just see him now, he’d have gotten through those years so much easier.
“ I can’t believe you bought me this, you call my sunshine clothes dumb all the time,” Shoyo teases.
He shrugs, it’s true.
“Yeah and? Doesn’t mean you’re gonna stop wearing it.” He shoots back.
Hinata smiles faux annoyance, and Kageyama knows it’s fake, Hinata always overdoes it, heavily enough so that he never has to worry if he’s genuinely mad at him. Tobio loves him for it, so much.
“ Okay, my turn!”
Hinata turns to his backpack giddy, and a touch shy before unzipping it and pulling out a white bag, tissue paper peeking out the top neatly, he sets it on the bed scooting back so there’s room before gesturing for Tobio to open it, so he does.
Kageyama slides the tissue paper out lightly before his hand meets a card, which he goes to open first, he peels the sealed adhesive gently, before pulling out the card and glancing at the front a smile tugging at his lips before opening it and reading it.
There’s two little birds printed on the front, and a pretty font that says ‘Happy valentine’s day’, on the inside printed in slight cursive, with minimal designs, it says ‘let’s stick together like vel- crow,’ Tobio can’t help the snort that leaves him looking over at Hinata and rolling his eyes, “that was stupid.”
Hinata laughs, “don’t even, admit it you laughed a little inside.”
He bites his lip to stop the stupid smile he feels himself wanting to do and turns back to the card to read the message Hinata wrote.
‘I love you, bird or word, short or tall, stupid or not. I love you, Tobio.’
“You’re—”
He flushes, his face feeling hot, as he looks down at the space on the bed between them.
“You're an idiot.” He gets out.
Hinata’s smile only broadens, “You love me,” he shoots back at Kageyama without hesitation.
“I love you.” He confirms, shy.
Turning back to the gift, he pulls the rest of the tissue paper out, before his hands meet a really soft material, pulling it out he’s met with a blue and white blanket, with little cute animated eyed, milk cartons all over it, he laughs despite himself, and runs his fingers over the material soothingly. He loves it. Sure it’s cute, and he’d be a bit embarrassed to use it around the team, but he’s done way more embarrassing shit then have a cute blanket of all things, especially since not that long ago, Yamaguchi let it slip that Tsukishima has a dinosaur hoodie little spikes on the back and all.
Yeah, Kageyama will use this proudly, especially since if anybody sees it and asks where he got it or whatever, Kageyama gets to say ‘I don’t know ask Hinata he got it for me on valentine’s day’ because you know, they’re boyfriends, and Hinata loves him.
“ I love it,” he says softly, turning to Hinata, who’d been biting on a nail in obvious nervousness.
“You do? It’s not too I don’t know.”
He pulls Shoyo’s hand away from his mouth gently, “seriously I will one hundred percent use this on the couch obsessively. Hell, even on the bus rides, the AC's always blasting way too much.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Shoyo jumps forward into his arms, crashing his back against the bed, but Tobio doesn’t mind, he’d expected such, Hinata’s like that always reaching for Kageyama like
he’s more than an old dusty broken toy in the attic that went out of style ages ago.
As if Kageyama’s the coolest kid on the playground, and not the weird kid obsessing over a sport, he genuinely just loves.
Hinata makes him feel worth something, Hinata makes him want to work harder to be worth something.
“I love you.” He gets out.
Hinata looks at him dead in the face, a growing smile on his lips, and, “you’re an idiot.”
Tobio’s heart flutters, before a thought crosses his mind.
“Maybe but you’re dating me so what does that make you?”
“An even bigger idiot.”
