Work Text:
Dick was, and still is, bored. More than a cat chasing its tail. He could literally have anything else happen to him instead of entertaining stuck-up socialites any longer. Today was just not the day. He would usually have no trouble, charity balls have been his thing for the longest time, and neither Jason nor Tim could charm like him. So he always had to make an appearance with Bruce.
He never liked galas, but whatever, they were for charity, so it was definitely worth it in the end. At least he wasn’t being tortured or stuck on a freezing-cold mountain in the middle of nowhere.
Apparently, he wasn’t going to suffer through this event alone. Dick stopped moving his mouth, stopping in the middle of his conversation.
“Grayson?”
“Is there something wrong, Richard?”
He ignored their words, walking past the guest. Dick noticed someone in the ballroom. A young adult just like himself, with medium-length silk-like jet-black hair, cherry red lipstick, and wearing the most stunning black dress with just a bit of white fur around the top he’s ever seen. Her face was more recognizable than his own.
She walked towards him, a small grin on her face, the way she moved, everything about her, entangled him.
Before long, Dick and the girl were standing in front of each other, bright smiles on both their faces. It seemed as if the whole world had come to a stop just for them. As if the eyes of every guest within the gala were on them. He could already feel the gaze of Alfred and Bruce on him.
“I didn’t know you were going to be here tonight, Zee.” Dick greeted, looking into her bright cyan eyes.
The two shared a long-long history. Young Justice. The Team. New Years. Watchtower. Mountain Justice. Dating.
But unfortunately, they weren’t anymore. It’d been a few years. But more fortunately, they were still on more than good terms. And from as much as he’s heard, she hasn’t dated anyone else. Like him.
Dick felt a feeling in his heart that he hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Neither did I, but I’m here anyway,” Zatanna responded.
“Care to dance?” The former Boy Wonder extended his hand.
“Of course.” The Homo Magi took it.
The two danced beautifully on the floor to the music, others also danced around them as well, but they didn’t notice, they were too lost in each other’s presence. They moved magically in sync with each other, almost as if they were stuck in their own little world. The two moved as if they were one, joined together with both their hands, gracefully across the floor.
They went on.
And on.
And on.
And on.
The two didn’t care about anything else, too caught up in each other. Dick could swear she had cast a seduction spell on him if those existed.
“Hey… Um… Guys, it’s over.” Tim’s somewhat concerned voice reached him, and Dick snapped to him. And then he looked around the room, significantly fewer people than before, by significantly, he meant only Bruce and Alfred besides Tim who was also holding a broom, Zatanna, and himself.
He turned to a clock.
Three hours.
Pretty long dance.
“Oh.” His mouth made the sound on its own.
“Shall we continue somewhere else?” Zatanna asked, still clinging onto both of his hands.
“How does dinner sound? I’m starving and I know a place you’ll like.” He replied, looking into her eyes.
“Sounds lovely.” She said, now holding onto his right arm and leaning on him. The two walked out of the room, heading to whatever restaurant Dick had in mind.
They looked like a couple. Acted like a couple. Felt like a couple. Could’ve been a couple.
Yet they were not. Why?
“I’ll never get those two… Why did they even break up in the first place.” Tim muttered with a sigh after they were out of sight, continuing to sweep the floor with his broom.
Omake:
Bruce and Alfred stood on the Wayne Manor Balcony, talking.
“Since when has Master Dick and Miss Zatara gotten back together?” Alfred asked.
“No idea. The whole meta-human science is easier to understand than their relationship,” Bruce replied.
“You understand it?” He turned to look at him, eyebrow raised.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
