Work Text:
This was it. The land stand. There's fallen authorities laying all around John. At best they're too scared to get up again lest the man leagues above them knocks them down again. At worst... well, it doesn't matter anyway.
John is not exactly in good shape himself, despite his efforts to heal himself, but the enemies just keep coming. At this rate, he'll be too exhausted to fight anymore and he'll be defeated then and there. The thought of what happens after being captured makes him shudder, but he shakes off those thoughts and keeps fighting.
Once he's really beaten down, he thought it was over and the end of the line for him. He just hopes his sacrifice will be worth it for Mom, Dad, Sera, everyone else, who deserved to live in a world free of the oppression and suffering of the authorities. He's thankful that after this last batch of enemies, he at least has some time to slump against the wall and close his eyes. Close his eyes and have his last moments of peace before he meets his bloody end. Maybe he could have one last smile.
Heh, he'd be just like the protagonist of Unordinary and die for a just cause. It wouldn't even be sad because maybe then this damn world will finally see some fucking peace.
On second thought, the accumulation of his life flashes before his eyes. From his first memories with his family to the worst memories and then to the very best ones he had with Sera. Sera... that's right. Of course she'd be sad to see him go, she's said so herself. And what else did she say? "Don't you ever throw your life away..." It echoed in his mind. That and everything else they promised they'd do when this is all over.
Well, he's certainly reminded himself of his reason to live. He's not a character in a book so he shouldn't treat his life like one. Something that his father, bless him, wouldn't have lived to learn.
Right, he still has things to do. So he clutches his still-healing injuries and finally gets off from that wall. He's not going to throw himself back into the gray just yet, but he's going to prepare himself for a life he actually intends to continue. He's going to fight to live.
