It hurts—
Becoming a crow again.
As if there's suddenly too much boy to fit into too little bird, and in a moment, Monty's left flapping where his fingers used to be and squawking when he once had a voice—
And somehow spending his days on the ledge outside Edwin's window isn't worth having to return to the cage in Esther's den every night. The witch grills him for everything he's found out – every detail – and Monty mostly tells her lies.
Mostly.
At least the pickings are easier; and it doesn't mean half as much when Edwin shoos him away.
