In the beginning, he tried counting how many times he'd died as a way of keeping track of days, but he quickly gave up. He had no way of knowing how long his deaths lasted so the count wouldn't be accurate. But without a measure of time to cling onto, there's very little to keep a person sane.
Xie Lian had no way of knowing if today was today, or if it wasn't today until tomorrow. He's become frozen in time, a joke of a human time capsule.
He couldn't get out on his own. All that was left for him to do was to lay there and wait.
