Unexpected Kindness Gone Wrong

Summary:

Bender has a shot at being nice, the crew is very unsettled by this helpful cheery Bender

Work Text:

Leela, Fry, and the others were gathered around the table discussing their latest delivery mission when Bender entered the room. Instead of his usual brash entrance, he quietly slipped in, almost unnoticed.

"Hey, what's up with Bender?" Fry whispered to Leela, noticing the unusual behavior.

"I have no idea. Maybe he's malfunctioning," Leela replied, eyeing Bender suspiciously.

Aboard the vast expanse of the spaceship, the Planet Express crew was baffled by a peculiar phenomenon: Bender, the mischievous robot with a penchant for mayhem and mischief, had undergone a remarkable transformation. Instead of his usual antics, he was acting, dare I say, nice.

Fry scratched his head in confusion. "Uh, guys, did you notice something weird about Bender lately?"

Leela raised an eyebrow, her cycloptic gaze narrowing. "You mean besides the fact that he hasn't tried to steal anything in days?"

Amy chimed in, her voice tinged with disbelief. "Yeah, he even offered to help me with my paperwork yesterday. Without asking for bribes!"

The crew gathered around the common room, exchanging puzzled glances as they pondered the mystery of Bender's newfound kindness.

Leela, equally perplexed, replied, "I don't know, but this feels...wrong. Like when you see a clown without makeup."

Hermes, who was witnessing Bender actually filing paperwork without complaining, muttered, "Dis must be some sorta trick. Like when a scorpion offers to carry you across a river."

Amy chimed in, "Maybe he finally got a conscience upgrade. Like, he saw a cute puppy or something."

Professor Farnsworth adjusted his glasses, peering at Bender over the rim. "Nonsense! Robots don't develop consciences out of nowhere. There must be something afoot."

Zoidberg, ever the optimist, waved his claws excitedly. "Maybe Bender finally realized the joy of helping others! Oh, what a beautiful transformation!"

Despite the optimism, the crew couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling that something was amiss. They decided to confront Bender about his sudden change in behavior.

As they gathered around Bender, Leela cleared her throat. "Uh, Bender, we've noticed you've been acting...different lately."

Bender looked up from polishing the ship's exterior, his eyes betraying a vulnerability they rarely saw. "Yeah, what's it to ya?"

"Well, for one thing, you've been... nice," Amy blurted out.

Bender's eyes narrowed, a defensive edge creeping into his voice. "And that's a problem?"

"It's just... unexpected," Leela explained, her gaze searching his metallic features. "We were wondering if something was wrong."

Hermes stepped forward, cautiously. "It's just that...you've been...nice. And helpful. And frankly, it's weirding us out."

Bender's cheerful facade faltered, revealing a glimpse of vulnerability beneath his metallic exterior. "Oh, so now I'm weird for trying to be helpful? Is that it?" he snapped, his voice tinged with hurt.

"No, that's not what we're saying at all," Fry hurriedly interjected. "It's just... unusual, that's all."

Bender's facade cracked, revealing a glimpse of the turmoil beneath. "Unusual. Right."

The crew exchanged uneasy glances, realizing they may have touched a nerve. Professor Farnsworth spoke up tentatively, "Now, now, Bender, we're just concerned that you might be malfunctioning. It's not like you to be so... cooperative."

Bender's eyes flashed with a mix of anger and hurt. "Malfunctioning? Is that what you all think of me? That I'm just a defective hunk of metal?"

Bender's demeanor shifted, his metallic brows furrowing. "So, what? You all think I'm just a big ol' jerk, huh?"

The crew exchanged uncomfortable glances, unsure of how to respond.

"That's not what we meant, Bender," Leela said softly, reaching out a hand towards him. "We appreciate everything you've been doing, but we just want you to be yourself."

Bender's eyes glistened with unshed tears as he shook his head. "No, it's fine. I get it. That's all I am to you guys." With that, he turned on his heel and bolted out of the room, his metallic footsteps echoing down the corridor.

As Bender sat in the dimly lit apartment he shared with Fry, the echoes of his own sobs filled the room. He slumped against the door, feeling the weight of his own inadequacy crushing him. "Tried to better myself, but for what!?" he muttered bitterly to himself.

He wiped away his tears with a metal hand, his thoughts swirling with self-doubt and bitterness. "All they see is a selfish kleptomaniac who's good for nothing but causing trouble. They probably regret ever letting me into their lives."

Bender's processors whirred with a mixture of anger and hurt. "Why haven't they given up on me already? Every time I steal, lie, or cheat, I'm just proving them right. So why do they keep me around?"

"...no wonder," he continued, voice thick with emotion, "no wonder I'm always plagued by the thought they're gonna throw me out."

As he sat there, lost in his self-pity, a nagging question gnawed at him: why did they even bother keeping him around? Why hadn't they given up on him already, considering all the trouble he caused?

Meanwhile, outside the apartment, Leela, Fry, and the rest of the crew had gathered, their expressions filled with concern and remorse.

Fry jiggled the doorknob, frowning when he found it locked. "Bender, buddy, you in there?"

There was no response from inside, only the sound of muffled sobs.

Leela's brow furrowed with worry. "Bender, it's us. Can you let us in?"

Still no reply came from within, but Leela refused to give up. She glanced at Fry, determination etched on her face. "Fry, do you have your spare key?"

Fry nodded, rummaging through his pockets until he found the key. With a click, he unlocked the door, and the crew cautiously entered Bender's apartment.

The sight that greeted them broke their hearts. Bender sat hunched over on the floor, his metal frame trembling with each sob. His usual bravado was nowhere to be found, replaced by an aura of vulnerability that struck a chord with the crew.

"What do you want?" Bender's voice wavered, betraying his attempt to sound tough.

Leela stepped forward, her voice gentle. "We're worried about you, Bender. We didn't mean to upset you."

Bender scoffed, his bitterness evident. "Yeah, right. You all think I'm just a worthless piece of scrap metal. Why bother pretending otherwise?"

Fry stepped forward, his expression earnest. "That's not true, Bender. We know you're more than that. You're our friend."

Bender shook his head, unable to accept their words. "Friend? More like a burden. You'd all be better off without me."

Fry approached Bender slowly, sitting down beside him with a sympathetic expression. "Look, I know we've been hard on you lately, but that's only because we care about you. We don't want you to feel like you have to change who you are just to please us."

Bender scoffed, his metal frame shaking with bitterness. "Yeah, well, maybe who I am isn't good enough for you guys. Maybe I'm just a lost cause."

Fry shook his head, placing a reassuring hand on Bender's shoulder. "No way, Bender. You're not a lost cause. Yeah, you might mess up sometimes, but that's what makes you... you. And we wouldn't trade you for anything."

Bender's optics flickered with disbelief, his voice trembling as he spoke. "But... all I ever do is cause trouble. I steal, I lie, I cheat... why do you even bother keeping me around?"

Bender's resolve wavered, the walls he had built around himself crumbling under the weight of their sincerity. "I don't know how to be anything else."

Amy stepped forward, her eyes filled with compassion. "Maybe you don't have to be anything else, Bender. Just be yourself. We love you for who you are, even if you drive us crazy sometimes."

Fry sighed, searching for the right words to comfort his friend. "Bender, you're more than just your mistakes. You're loyal, you're funny, you're... you. And yeah, you might drive us crazy sometimes, but we wouldn't be the same without you."

Bender's circuits buzzed with emotion, his eyes locking with Fry's in a rare moment of vulnerability. "You really mean that?"

Fry nodded earnestly, a small smile playing on his lips. "Of course, buddy. We're a team, through thick and thin. And that means sticking together, no matter what."

Bender sniffled, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Thanks, guys. I... I needed to hear that."

Fry pulled Bender into a tight embrace, feeling the weight of their friendship in that simple gesture. "Anytime, pal. Anytime."
