Chapter Text

  • It wasn't the scorched skin that still seemed to pulse with pain under the layers of bandages that hurt him most, more than anything he felt the rhythmic beating of his heart in agony as he stands before the door to your house you share
  • A thousand different scenarios playing out in his mind to what your reaction to the appearance of his body will be, he hadn't called you after he was burned, nor when he was picked up and taken to get treated, you didn't know about the skin grafts doctors had to attach, he hadn't told you about the intense pain he had to endure for nights in the hospital
  • And now he had to dig up the courage he knew was somewhere within him, because more than anything he wanted to see you, to have you trace a map of his body that you knew so well, except it had changed now, it would feel different
  • When you opened the door, you only met his eyes and didn't notice the limp in his walk as he tried the best he could to run into your arms, you didn't feel him any different when all you did was bury your face into his neck saying how much you had missed him
  • You hadn't seen the worst of it yet, once inside you knew the routine; you'd take off his boots, remove his clothing and get to work on preparing a warm plate of food so he could get clean and eat later, but after his boots had been taken off and you tried to move to take his clothes off he stopped you
  • It confused you, you wanted to show your gentleness, to take care of him the way he deserved, the way he wanted
  • But he was apprehensive, pushing you away not wanting you to see how scarred he was now, he knew his body wouldn't ever be unscathed in this line of work, but never did he think it'd go this far, and he didn't know if he wanted to find out how you'd be able to look at him with the same love in your eyes if he looked so distinct from last time
  • You let him bathe, and even as he washed he thought he could still smell the fire and smoke in his hair, clinging to his skin even after the doctors had done everything they could to repair him, he was gentle, so soft and delicate did he feel but how marred was his skin at first sight
  • He knew how much you loved to embrace him, to feel him, but he felt nervous, now everything seemed to have a second thought with it, he spent a moment picking out his clothes, the ones that'd cover the most
  • But when you walked in and saw that beautifully blemished body the softness in your eyes did not flicker, not even for an instant
  • Your fingertips did not shy from the lines or scars that were raising up from his skin, they boldly and lovingly felt, his chin rested on your shoulder, his soft breaths warming your skin
  • His shoulders slumped, he trembled when your hands started trailing down his bare back, a single tear fell from his eye and onto your shoulder
  • Whatever love you had to give he'd need it now, more than anything else, it was essential you show you still viewed him the same way, that your eyes wouldn't change the way you gazed at him
