Chapter 12
You Make Me Happy
It had been two weeks since Kara was able to leave the island and was immediately found by the super friends who had been on the lookout for her as Kara sped away on the boat towards land. Kara had been doing her best with the coordinates she was given, but she wasn’t very good at directions seeing as she didn’t usually use things like cars or boats even to travel considering flying was so much easier. She had gotten lost at some point and figured yelling for help would eventually get someone’s attention and it did indeed do the trick because J’onn, who had been patrolling in the air, had heard her calling for help and found her in the middle of the ocean still. J’onn helped guide her to the land to properly tie the boat down at a dock somewhere before he flew her to the DEO since Kara’s powers weren’t fully back yet since night had fallen by the time Kara got close enough to land to be found and had only been exposed to sunlight for not even quite two hours. The rescue was a dramatic affair, but it felt like coming home, which it really was. It felt so good to be coming home.
During that time, Kara had been contacted by Clone Lena and asked to help the other clones relocate after they rebelled and took care of the Lex clone. They decided unanimously that they wanted to live their own lives and search for something more than what they’d had so far. With the help of the super friends, they were able to come up with new identities and live in other parts of the world using their skills to start a new life and live out their lives how they saw fit to. They were free to live without the bounds and tightly controlled fist that Lex had had over them.
Lena had been working hard on a cure for Kara’s condition and she finally had a few research volunteers come back with full facial recognition after nearly a year of research and Lena finally gave Kara the option of having the operation. Kara accepted it and on the other side when Kara woke up, Lena was there and she was the first face Kara saw again. How Kara had missed those green, green eyes, so beautiful, that gorgeous smile, the dazzling dimples, her expressive eyebrows, the sharp jawline, and her beautifully red painted lips Kara was finally able to see when she kissed them. Kara had cried and so had Lena as they kissed. Their faces were pressed together as Kara continued to take Lena’s face in after over a year of not being able to see anyone’s faces clearly.
“I love you, Lena.” Kara held Lena’s face in her hands gently rubbing her thumbs across Lena’s cheekbones, taking in the sharp jawline she hadn’t seen in so long and leaning in to press a kiss there, smiling as Lena laughed at the touch. “You are so extraordinary and you’ve given me something I thought was never going to be mine again. Lena, you are so, so special and wonderful. I love you so much, baby.”
“My sweet, sweet Kara. Always, I will always do everything I can for you. You are the one I love and I could never do anything but everything in my power to make sure that you are okay physically, emotionally, and mentally, my love. I will always fight for you, my darling.” Kara and Lena exchanged another gentle kiss, smiling as their lips pressed softly against each other. It felt like coming home just being able to see her face once more as they kissed for the first time since Kara could recognize her face again.
“Um, as much as I love that you two are able to see each other again, I’d also like to say to my sister. Am I a welcome face, Kara?” she asked, looking between them teasingly, happy for them and most especially her sister. Things had been so hard on Kara, but Alex was glad to see her smiling face again, exuberant and brilliant unlike the smaller smiles she had been sporting more lately. Seeing Kara’s sunshine smile once more felt like seeing the sun after a long winter night or after a long week of cloudy rain. It felt warm and cozy again. “I am so happy for you.”
Kara reached out for Alex and they ended up in a three way group hug that felt warm and comforting, like it helped lighten the heavy load Kara had been carrying alone for so very long. It was so relieving. Though everyone had been comforting, supportive, and there for Kara, it still felt like she had been alone because no one else could quite understand what she had been going through but they all cared and that, more than anything, had mattered to Kara the most. Feeling the support had helped Kara carry through to the moment Lena was finally able to help Kara with the damage that had occurred during the car accident.
“Thank you so much Alex for helping Lena. For helping me too. Without Sam, the both of you, and all of the research volunteers, I may not have ever been able to see any of your faces again.” Kara squeezed them both a little bit more firmly than she normally would, but neither Alex nor Lena complained and squeezed her as hard as they could instead, feeling so much love in the wonderful way they wrapped around each other fervently. It was so cathartic to be able to know that once she let go, Kara would be able to see warm faces smiling back at her sweetly and with such tender expressions. Kara no longer had to guess nor miss the little quirks she had missed between Lena’s eyebrow raise, Alex’s eyebrow twitch, Sam’s serene calmness, Winn’s excitable smile, Nia’s mischievous smirk, Brainy’s confused eyebrow furrow, or even J’onn’s stern, fatherly stare. So much had been missing in being unable to see these things she’d gotten so used to, but now she didn’t have to miss it anymore.
“Anything for you, Kara.” Kara couldn’t wait to see everyone else who had been busy with life things and couldn’t quite make it in to see Kara just yet, but maybe she could go and visit them instead.
Kara sported a mischievous look on her face as she asked innocently, “if you really mean that, can we go and celebrate once everyone is free at that Vietnamese restaurant around the corner maybe? I would love to get those delicious homemade dumplings again and try a few other dishes they had! There was so much I didn’t get to try yet!”
Alex laughed, “Kara, are you taking advantage of Lena’s immense wealth and almost compulsive need to spoil you silly as her one true love?” Kara’s face flushed at the tease and she sputtered in response, unable to form a comeback.
“What? Alex, what are you, no, that is not what I meant! Ugh, you jerk, Alex!”
Laughing, Lena chimed in, “darling, no need to be offended if she’s right though? I love spoiling you endlessly, Kara, my love. You deserve everything I can give you and so much more, dear. I love you so much and I can’t help but spoil you rotten, darling.”
Kara’s blush grew from her cheeks to the tip of her ears as she looked at Lena adoringly in response. “Lena, please tell me more about how much you love me, baby. I love you the most, sorry Alex,” to which Alex rolled her eyes and scoffed in reply playfully, “and I want to shower you in affection and sweet words that I mean every word of too, my love.” Kara pressed a soft kiss against Lena’s forehead, “there is nothing I wouldn’t give to make sure you’re as happy as you make me. Forever is what you promised me the moment I woke up, and I make the same promise to you, Lena.”
Lena leaned up to press a kiss that she felt encompassed all of her feelings into the softest kiss and every press of their lips against each other. Kara didn't think her life was going to turn around from the trauma of losing her ability to see faces, but her life couldn’t get better than this. Well, that is until Lena proposed just a few months later, beating Alex and Sam who'd gotten serious with Kelly's blessing and her own new romance coming along.
If Kara had given up, she might have never known that life could be like this. But this happiness with Lena by her side was all Kara needed. Life was finally good, better even.
