Work Text:
I am unwritten
Can't read my mind
I'm undefined
From the doors of the Opera Epiclese, the Iudex watched as the Traveler danced in the rain, the tune of the song scratching at the inside of their brain.
I'm just beginning
The pen's in my hand
Ending unplanned
Today's opera has just ended. While it wasn't particularly sad (the accused got acquitted), the testimony of the family members for the accused were heart wrenching. With little evidence to go off of, Neuvillette immediately released the accused.
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
As the rain poured on, the Traveler laughed. Paimon floated around them, reveling in their rare good mood.
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
And then, just as the Chief Justice exited the Opera Epiclese, the Traveler broke out into song.
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Neuvillette watched in wonder as Paimon looped in the air as the Traveler continued singing.
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The Chief Justice smiled to himself as he stepped into the rain. He was no longer the Iudex of old, not since after the flood.
At this moment, he was simply Neuvillette, a man who enjoys walking in the rain.
I break tradition
Sometimes my tries are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes
But I can't live that way
The Traveler heard the distinct sound of bells and turned to see the Iudex walking towards them.
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
They smiled. The Hydro Dragon couldn't be more at home than in the rain outside the Opera House.
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
They continued singing, beckoning the tall man over to them.
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
A few people, smiling, curious folk, joined the Traveler and the Chief Justice in the swelling downpour.
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
The Traveler may have infected the people of Fontaine with their song.
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Voices began lifting into the high heavens, singing of a song that is slowly, surely helping the Chief Justice smile more.
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
Neuvillette raised a hand to the sky, willing just a bit more rain to come down.
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
All around him, people stomped and jumped in the puddles that formed on the walkway.
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Melusines laughed alongside their human friends, not a single care to their wet clothes, their soaked hats.
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Slowly, Neuvillette thought as people clapped and cheered around him, surely, the world is improving.
Live your life with arms wide open
People can change, and people do change for the better, more often than not.
Today is where your book begins
And that makes all the difference.
The rest is still unwritten.
