one cup of coffee was all it took

Work Text:

A strong, smokey aroma wafted through the air as Tsukishima stared out the glass walls of this particular coffee shop. The mug in his hands was warm to the touch, and he basked under the heat in silence, occasionally sipping, whilst ruminating around his life for the past few months.

He did this while watching a sharply-suited woman working in keenness with her laptop, a half-eaten croissant lying beside it.

A young boy chatting up a storm — towards who seemed to be his mother — enthusiastically, with the older woman smiling softly towards the child. Happy. Content.

Right behind Tsukishima, he can hear a group of rambunctious teens laughing and joking around as they filled their mouths with bread and an unspeakable amount of coffee.

At a semi-secluded corner of the café, he spots a couple. From the blonde’s standpoint, it allowed him to catch a glimpse of the two in full view, and he watched as they grinned widely at each other, staring into each other’s eyes with indistinguishable love. Happiness. Devotion.

Tsukishima Kei observed, and he observes. He ruminates, and thinks. And thinks once more. He thinks about the falling leaves ending their journey as they touch the ground. Thinks about a friend who’d started to gradually slink his way into his field of vision these past few months. Thinks about his once-warm soup going cold. About his rapid heartbeat. About the people all around this ordinarily regular café. How they’re living their own lives, and how he would ultimately never get to know about them. Thinking about coffee. Two lovers. Him.

Branches from a nearby tree sway under a hefty breeze. Their leaves fall to the ground, and Tsukishima finally opens his eyes to what’s right in front of him all along.

He grabs his phone, scrolls through his contacts, and presses a button.

Tsukishima smiles, a rare feat considering this was unlike any other smile he bestows to just anyone. “You have no idea what I just discovered, Hinata. Wanna meet me in the same nearby café around the school area?”
