Summary
This is how the story goes. After the art gallery, the cocoons and the shattering, Vergilius makes a deal with the devil. His kids—returned and whole—in exchange for his services as a guide. It's a hopeless promise and he should know better than to trust it. But there are 13 scared children and Vergilius could never turn away from an open road, so he reaches up and grabs the offered palm, five fingers to five fingers, the facsimile of prayer.
Every story has its variations. And in this one, it's not Faust on the other side of the deal. It's Dante.
