“Ah, those girls training, sweat dropping down their flushed faces really was dreamy!” Soleil gushed by her side, laying flat on her stomach, her feet kicking up and down in the air as she sighed in contentment, her own face held between her hands blushed in delight, eyes closed as she relished the image in her mind. But soon she opened her eyes to look at Nina, who was by her side resting in the same fashion, her head supported by her crossed arms and a apathic look given; and as she did so, the cheerful mercenary dropped her head and added with a beaten tone: “Not like you understand it though.”
Nina couldn’t help but pout at those words, a deep crease between her eyebrows.
Soleil wasn’t wrong, she wasn’t into spying on random girls, she would rather stare at men and their little interactions, daydreaming about it and making scenarios in her mind. They had debated and bantered about it so much that both held no doubt in mind about the other’s preference.
Nina liked to stare at men, Soleil liked to stare at women. And somehow that translated into them sharing bushes like now, hide behind them and giggle to themselves as they people watched to their hearts content.
Soleil was always looking at other girls that weren’t her—which bothered Nina. Soleil would flirt and drool at Ophelia, at Sophie and even her own mother, but she would not do such thing to her; she could be right by her side, but Soleil wouldn’t look at her unless it involved trying to convince her of the superiority of girls.
“Maybe I could.” Nina said with a shrug, looking from the corner of her eyes at Soleil. And then she giggled at her reaction, biting her lower lip at the way her jaw dropped and eyes popped ready to burst in her face, crimson coating her face from the roots of her hair—she had never seen her so throwed off rhythm, unless it involved the dancing she hide to practice.
Nina could not, she only cared for a single girl; bright cerulean hair, black clothes that she took off not caring who was watching, had terrible rhythm, loved to watch girls herself and had the brightest smile that anyone could muster, brightening everyone’s day whenever she appeared in the room.
“If you showed me.” Nina said nonchalant, her pulse quickening at the gall of those words, she couldn’t believe she had dared to say that.
“Eh? Eeeehhh?” Soleil squealed with an unnatural voice, like a duck being chocked. Taken back, she hasted to her knees, her hands grabbing the grass under them so heavily she was pulling it off.
Nina had never seen Soleil so red, so panicked and she savored it; such embarrassed look was as delicious as her boys love stories.
“W-what did you say?” Soleil asked in a screech so high-pitched it erased Nina’s smile as she grimaced at it.
For once, Nina was glad she was her father’s child and knew no such thing as shame.
“E-exactly as you said, why don’t you show me how great girls are?” She repeated herself, her fingers pulling her sleeves as nervousness started to build at the pit of her stomach, fearing she misaimed her shot. But Nina wasn’t a quitter. “You know, like an empirical proof.”
Surely Soleil understood her inuendo.
“You’re the girl’s connoisseur here, not me.” She added, shrugging her shoulders despite the heat that was propagating through her face.
But Soleil remained frozen there, looking at her as if she had gone crazy.
Nina could only stare at her hopefully, biting down her lip as the cold fear of rejection started to creep in her mind—what if she really was missing her shot? What if Soleil simply wasn’t interest in her? Just because she liked women didn’t mean she liked Nina too.
But before Nina took back her proposition, Soleil suddenly lent towards her, pining her against the ground with her body hovering over hers. Now it was Nina’s turn to blush bright red from the tip of her ears and gasp in surprise, her blue eyes trembling as she turned around to see Soleil’s equally embarrassed face, a droplet of sweat turning down her temple.
For an expert in flirting with girls, Soleil had a nervous look in her face, her eyes jumping all around but Nina’s own eyes, her tongue peeking out from her mouth as she licked her lips. The leaves stuck in her bushy hair just made her scruffy appearance after digging through bushed with her to snoop on people more endearing, she looked silly and uncertain—but that calmed Nina’s heart a bit, she feared being the one at advantage, unlike Soleil, she had neither experience with girls nor was a people’s person.
“Why the sudden interest? We agreed to disagree, don’t you remember?” The mercenary pointed out, a jumpy giggle leaving her lips—the same awkward laughter she dropped when she was in the middle of a hoar of enemies without an ally in sight, a fake giggle to throw off others off. Then, Soleil asked with an uncomfortable tone, tiptoeing around Nina’s reaction. “Also… I was sure you didn’t swing this way, if you get my drift.”
“W-well, you know… you see…” Nina was now the one stuck between the sword and a hard place, or rather between Soleil and the meadow they were relaxing on, babbling as she tried to push words together in her mind. She scowled as she answered. “You don’t have a monopoly on liking both men and women, you know?”
At that, Soleil chuckled with that chirping, perky tone that made Nina’s heart beat faster than any of her daydreaming—so clear and upbeat, like the first rays of sun at daybreak.
“But why the sudden interest?” Soleil asked with an arched eyebrow, a sideways smile to match her confusion. She looked hopeful, excited like a puppy.
Nina smirked, puffing her chest as she raised her right hand to move away Soleil’s fangs to take a better look at those gorgeous eyes, then her hand falling to her cheek, caressing it, and taking Soleil’s breath between her fingertips.
“I have one girl I’m interest in.” Nina dropped, a sobered expression as she squeezed Soleil’s cheek. She tried to speak as calm as she could despite how much she wanted to squeal and roll on the ground, her heart beating so hard inside her it hurt. “Wanted to confirm something, you know.”
A knowing, smug smile showed on Soleil’s face and despite that, her eyes were gentle, loving, taking away the weight of fear from Nina’s heart in a swoop—no wonder she was a lady’s killer, under her, Nina felt secure, her worries melting away under those loving eyes.
“Oh, I wonder which girl?” She asked rhetorically, teasing Nina as she slowly closed the distance between their faces, her warm, minty breath tickling Nina’s face—sowing pink dust all over her cheeks as she did so. Their chests brushing against each other, their quivering hearts almost closing each other. She was so close, her volume lowering as she almost purred against her; she knew, and she was having fun, relishing on it. “Maybe a girl of our army, bright smile and charming personality? One that actually likes you a ton?”
With the fear of rejection crushed, Nina smiled again, a wide and coquette smile as she tilted her head, eyes shining as she giggled under her breath.
Moving her hand from Soleil’s face, Nina made a circle with her index and thumb, closed an eye and spied Soleil through it before declaring in a teasing tone:
“One that I’m spying with my little eye right now.”
And there it was, that loud, bursting laughter that sparked fireworks whenever Soleil laughed, brightening the world around Nina. Oh, how much she loved that cheerful laughter that stayed with her hours later, resounding in her mind like an unending echo she didn’t want to stop.
She wanted to be the one to make Soleil’s laughter sound like that.
Without another word, Soleil finally closed the distance between their lips, eyes closed as she kissed her—her lips were soft, warm, and tasted like peach, surely from her lipstick. A warm, tickling sensation expanded all across Nina’s lips, a sensation like nothing else that made her whole body vibrate with gusto. She felt like being embraced by summer’s warm sun and chill breeze, gently but also passionately.
From behind a bush, with the sun as their only witness they kissed, their lips melted into each other in a moment that felt both forever and too short.
When Soleil moved apart, Nina couldn’t do much but whine in protest.
“So, how’s that?” Soleil asked with a haughty tone, her lips hovering over hers, her eyebrows rising and lowering in a flirty manner. The way she was biting down her lower lip told her she was holding on a loud, joyous laughter of victory.
“I don’t know, might need more to know for sure.”
Wrapping her arms around Soleil’s neck, Nina teased back with a flirty tone, a playful glint in her eyes as she beams at Soleil before pulling her towards her once more, kissing each other until they got tired, breathlessly and the sun was nowhere to be seen.
