Chapter Text
Sirius was completely exhausted when they got back home to the cottage a few hours later. Remus had picked up two pizzas on the way, and now they sat on the couch eating them.
After a long while, Sirius and Remus had gotten back down to Dumbledore in the kitchen, and after that they had performed the spell to make Dumbledore the new secretkeeper of Grimmauld Place 12. It felt like a weight was lifted from Sirius’s chest. Now, he didn’t have to worry about that anymore. He could just sit on the sofa here with Remus and eat the greasy pizza, pushing away all unwanted thoughts. It was surprisingly easy to do, but well, he and Remus had always been easy.
James had been Sirius’s best friend, but Remus was always something more. It took him over a year to realize what his feelings for Remus meant, and another one to gather the courage to say it to him. They had gotten together at the end of their sixth year at Hogwarts, and even though they had had some ups and downs, Sirius and Remus had always stayed with each other. They just didn’t know how to be angry with each other or fight for longer than a few days before they made up again. Remus was the best thing that had ever happened to Sirius. Even living in Grimmauld Place again could be tolerated, because Remus would be there with him.
It had taken Remus hours to convince Sirius that he actually wanted to be with him and live in Grimmauld Place 12. At first, Sirius hadn’t believed him, but now, he had been convinced. Only watching Remus’s relaxed and happy face felt reassuring to him. Maybe they could make a life for themselves in Grimmauld Place. In less than a week's time, he would get to see. Their moving in was scheduled to next week, and after a few days they would be joined by the Weasleys. And after that, Harry. Sirius looked forward to seeing him again. They needed to talk, after all that had happened to Harry when they last saw each other they hadn’t got the chance to properly sit down and talk.
Everything would be fine, Sirius told himself. He almost believed it, with Remus at his side. His face was scarred and changed by wrinkles, his hair graying, but Sirius still thought that he was the most beautiful person in the entire world. He wondered for a moment if he should say it to him, but then discovered Remus was already asleep. Sirius gathered all his strength and carried him to their bedroom, carefully undressing him and tucking him in under the sheets. After Sirius himself had gotten ready for the night, he curled up at Remus’s side. He must have noticed, because he pulled his arm around Sirius, before groaning and going back to sleep.
Sirius pretended that they were just ordinary people, not caught up in a war and with the entire wizard population believing him to be a traitor and a murderer. They would defeat Voldemort, once and for all, and Sirius would get the life he deserved, together with Remus. They both had fought for their happy ending, and they would get it. They would. He was certain of it.
