Work Text:
You haven't seen Rin in days. Maybe small glimpses, but he's gone before you can think to catch up to him. You're awfully lonely and bored, now that he's not here to drag you into some ridiculous scheme and distract you from yourself. You can't get in touch with him either-- he doesn't answer phone calls or messages, and you doubt Yukio would talk to Rin for you.
Rin sits alone in Cram school, and he leaves class first. You don't miss your classmates accusatory glares, or their nervous glances, all of which you know Rin feels too. It's bullshit. Okumura Rin; the son of Satan. You don't care who he was parented by; Rin is a thorn in your side and a lovable idiot you've somehow fallen in love with. You refuse to shy away from him just cause the main demon of Gehenna got busy with a mortal woman.
You yearn to tell him all this yourself. You doubt that saying it over message will have the same effect, and you can't even be sure he reads them. Thus, since he refuses to come to you, you'll have to pull the classic move; breaking and entering.
You check the time, 12:28 am. With a sharp smile, you crouch down by the front door to Yukio and Rin's dorm. They got a whole building, so you don't have to worry about wandering into anyone else's room by mistake. You pull lock picking tools from your bag, the names of which you don't know. While on the way here, you watched a video for amateur lockpicks, the steps of which you followed from memory now.
Could you have shown up during the day? yes. The chances of Yukio actually letting you see Rin were low, though. You were tired of waiting around, and the hushed whispers from your classmates were starting to piss you off.
"Fuck, will Rin think I'm a creep for doing this? hopefully not." you mumble to yourself. Just as you were beginning to lose hope, the lock in the door clicked open. You prayed there wasn't more locks you'd have to go through. Or traps. Wow, you're really breaking into your crush's dorm without having done any research on the security installed; smart move, [Y.Name]!
You tuck the tools away in your bag, throwing a cautious glance at your surroundings. The streets are still dead, the lamps are lit, and everything is fine. You'll be fine.
You step into the building. It's dead silent. As quietly as you can, you close the door, locking it behind you-- just because everything looked empty doesn't mean you can start being careless. Sucking in a deep breath to calm your nerves, you begin your journey to where you remember Rin and Yukio's room being and, for the second time that night, prayed they hadn't had an impromptu room switch.
It's... kind of peaceful. In other dorms, you constantly have to worry about waking someone else up, or being caught past curfew. Here, you can walk without needing to worry about your next hiding spot. The moon shines through each window, spilling across the floor and illuminating the path forwards. You're tense still, considering that you literally broke into your teacher's dorm because you were being ignored by his brother, but that's besides the point.
Finally, you come to a stop. Behind the door you've stopped at, you hear soft breathing. Either it was a demon hiding in there, or you've arrived at Rin's room. Breathing impossibly quiet, you open the door just enough to see into the room. Through the slit in the door, you see a bed. There's a lump in it, covered by the bedsheets. Feeling a little more confident, you creak the door open wider.
You see Yukio, with his back to the door and glasses on the nightstand, snoozing peacefully. A loud, abrupt snore makes you flinch so hard you have to take a moment to pull yourself together before looking at the bed opposite Yukio's. There, Rin sleeps, loudly and decidedly more messy. It fits him perfectly. Now, how the fuck do you wake him up without alerting Yukio..?
You struggle to recall any and all facts you know about the Okumura twins, sorting through them mentally until you remember one particular fact about Yukio; on average, he gets 4 hours of sleep per night. Now, with a sleep schedule like that, there's absolutely a chance that he's also a light sleeper. Therefore, all you have to do is lure him away from the bedroom. You've come to peace with the fact that you can't talk to Rin without waking up Yukio, and you don't even feel that bad about it. Yukio's been pissing you off recently.
It's easier said than done.
You leave the Okumura twins to sleep, examining the nearby area, but nothing looks loud enough and also, you already have one crime on your list, you don't exactly want to break something and risk more years behind bars. You'll have to try something else.
You don't have to.
There's a yawn and the rustling of bedsheets being pushed aside, leading you to duck into a vacant dorm. Whoever just woke up definitely saw the door, and they absolutely know that someone else is in their dorm now. You scrunch your eyes closed, holding your breath and pressing yourself against the wall as if that would help. You wait. Nothing. Whichever twin just woke up is slowly wandering away, the thumping of their bare feet getting further away. You take this as your chance to slip out in the hall. Judging by the lack of snoring, you're going to say that Rin just got up. A quick peak into the dorm confirms that; Yukio is still sleeping soundly.
This is your chance!
Feeling confident, you quietly set off after Rin.
Rin is an idiot, sure, but he isn't oblivious. His senses are sharp, being part demon, and he woke up just as the door to his room was being opened. He couldn't see anyone; the intruder only opened the door a little bit. They were staring at Yukio, he knew that much-- but why? did they intend to hurt him?
No matter what Yukio said in the past, or thought of Rin now, he was still Rin's little brother. If this intruder was a threat, Rin would not hesitate to protect Yukio. Nothing happened for a moment. Rin closed his eyes; if he needed to draw this person out from hiding, he would. Faking being asleep was easy. Even then, they didn't dare to step into the room. They watched, and then Rin felt their presence move on.
What were they doing?
He continued to fake snore, ears picking up their steps as they paced around. It seems his first plan wasn't working-- that's fine. He pushed himself out of bed, yawning loudly. If they wanted a fight, Rin would need to draw them away from Yukio anyway. Rin couldn't use his flames publicly after the incident with Amaimon, so Rin's best bet was the kitchen. He needed a glass of water anyway.
What puzzled him was the intruder's insistence on hiding. Clearly, they knew what building they were breaking into, so why were they so.. shy? is that the word?
Regardless, Rin wanted answers. He made slow work of getting to the kitchen, noting the delayed movement of his stalker. They were definitely stealthy, he'd give them that. Maybe if Yukio wasn't so cold to him now, he'd have congratulated Rin for using his head rather than his flames.
Rin takes a moment to appreciate the concrete underneath his feet, and the mostly silent atmosphere. It feels like it's just him and the world, which is nice. The moon doesn't expect anything from him. He sets all of that aside for now; he has a criminal to catch.
He turns on the lights to the kitchen, snatching up a cup from the side and filling it with water. His stalker drew extremely close now. His tail flicked against the floor, and he heard them lean against the doorframe. Like they're a friend.
It was now or never.
You clocked that Rin knew you were following pretty quick. Not that he knew it was you, but he knew someone was following him. Still, you didn't try to talk to him. Not yet. He arrives at the kitchen, and finally you let yourself get close. You're more than a little mad at Rin-- not for igoring you, but for thinking his title as Satan's son mattered to you. He stuck by your side even though you made it clear you had no interest in befriending him, or anyone else; making friends was extremely tiring, and you had enough to think about already.
Rin always said hi to you, though. He asked how you were sometimes, and sometimes he would nap next to you. When he cooked, he'd offer you a portion. You grew close to him because he stuck around you, and eventually, you shared parts of yourself with him too. You suppose his persistent nature is another trait of his that you fell in love with. He drinks his glass of water quickly, gulping it down like he hadn't drank anything for centuries.
The cup makes contact with the side. You take this as the appropriate time to speak up.
"Why the fuck are you ignoring me?"
Rin flinches, spinning to face you. He looks confused, and a little lost. You're frowning at him, arms crossed across your chest. You look hurt, and it tugs at his heartstrings. The next thing Rin notes is that you looked tired; there's dark circles under your eyes, and even if nothing betrays it, he can imagine you've been crying lately. His tail droops close to the floor, looking guilty. You continue, standing upright.
"You refuse to talk to me now because your secret got revealed? Is that seriously it?" you're so upset that you ever gave him the idea that it mattered. You mean that in the nicest possible way, because clearly this mattered to Rin; but it doesn't matter to you. He matters to you, not appearances. His hands shake. "You should leave. I'm a danger to you." Rin mumbles. Your eyes widen, and you scoff.
"Rin Okumura, you are no more a threat to me now than you have been before. Who gives a shit if you're Satan's son?!" Rin looks like he wants to interject. Evidently, a lot of people care. You can't help the volume of your voice as you continue. "Satan hooked up with a mortal woman who then gave birth to you and Yukio. That makes him the son of Satan too! He could kill me at any time too, but has he?! n-"
Rin cuts you off, two wisps of blue flames burning on his head like horns. "Yukio couldn't inherit the flames! I'm a bigger threat!" now both of you are angry and yelling. Yukio is going to wake up at this rate; not like you give a shit. "You were always a threat, Rin! What, because people know that now, you're going to give up?! You're going to let your dreams go, just like that?!" Rin grits his teeth, glaring at the floor. You can see tears pooling in his eyes, but you have to make him understand.
"You're Satan's son in nothing but title! Are you actually going to stand here and tell me you think I care who you were born to?! You revealed your secret because we were in danger! You've proved yourself, time and time again, to be a good person! If the others can't see that, then they never deserved you in the first place!" you choke on your words. The lights in the kitchen make your eyes burn; or, at least, you thought it was the lights.
Tears, hot and wet, slide down your cheeks. It's a feeling you're all too used to. "I'm not in love with the son of Satan, or the twin to Yukio Okumura-- I love you, Rin. And you can't just walk into my life, have me fall for you and then expect me to be okay when you decide to leave." your voice has dropped to a shaky whisper. The flames on Rin's head have fizzled out, and now he's crying to. Your throat hurts from yelling. Rin embraces you suddenly, pulling you close.
Together, you cry.
Yukio sighs, watching you and Rin carefully. He lowers his gun, adjusting his glasses. He's happy you're in Rin's life now; hopefully, you can be better to him than Yukio has. With a bittersweet smile, he turns away, retreating to his bed. Rin will be fine with you for now.
bonus:
You and Rin, stifling tired giggles, sneak up into his dorm. Somehow, Yukio is still asleep, laying flat on his back and snoring quietly. Crying so much has made you and Rin a little loopy, and thus he came up with the novel of sneaking you into bed with him. That way, I can see your beautiful face as soon as I wake up!" he'd said, which made your chest swarm with butterflies. It was still surprising that he actually liked you back.
You settle under the covers, yawning. Your eyes sting, and there's still like four hours before sunrise. "I can't believe you actually broke in.." Rin mumbled, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you close. You rest your head on his chest, feeling too heavy to defend your choice. Instead, you grunt, shrugging. "Shut up an' go to sleep, loser." you grumble. He knows you mean it affectionately. He yawns, squeezing you once before settling into sleep as well.
Will Yukio scold you both tomorrow? probably. Do you care? not one bit.
