Strawberry Toppings

Summary:

A cease-fire day causes Trooper to bake a cake with Marksman.

Work Text:

The administrator announced a cease-fire for the day. This meant the others were able to do whatever they wanted for the day.

Marksman was excited as he always loved the cease-fire days. He was able to relax and not have to consistently wait for a shot for his team or to check his back every 5 minutes for the enemy Agent. So when the announcement finished he went to GRN’s kitchen. Marksman grabbed one of the cookbooks and stumbled upon a cake recipe he wanted to follow. It was simple enough but the cake looked nice.

Trooper on the other hand was not happy about a cease-fire day as he didn’t have much to do. On these days he has to walk around the base to find something to do or he looks for something else he’ll force himself to.

Trooper came out of his room and strolled through the GRN base looking for something to do. He stumbled into the kitchen and saw Marksman. Marksman was scratching his head looking at the cookbook being stumped. That’s when he turned his head and saw Trooper staring at him.

“Oh! Hey pardner! Do you possibly have a second to help me?” Marksman politely asked.
“Yeah. Sure, I can help.” Trooper asked as he walked over.

“I’m trying to figure out how to prepare this cake. Though I’m already thinking ahead to the final product.” Marksman said as he waved around the whisk while talking.

“Ah. Here let’s just do this.” Trooper said as he looked at the book and grabbed a mixing bowl.

Marksman watched as Trooper helped him walk through the steps the cookbook was instructing. Marksman was surprised at how much Trooper was leading. He didn't expect him to have so much passion and experience in baking but it was surprisingly nice to see a new side to Trooper as he’s very closed off with his personal life. As they finished preparing and put the cake in the oven to cook they had time to make small talk.

“So. How are you so good at baking?” Marksman questioned.

“Oh. I’ve baked with Brute and Annihalitor for awhile. They’re the only good cooks in the base anyways. It was nice.” Trooper rambled on.

“The experience was nice. It’s a stress reliever also as I feel at peace for once when I do bake. Still.. I don’t enjoy cease-fire days. Sorry, but they’re honestly really boring as I don't have much to do.” Trooper said as he moved his head around while talking.

Marksman didn’t expect him to ramble on so much but yet again it’s still nice.

“Well. If you’re up to it we could-” Marksman was suddenly interrupted by the timer they set for the cake.

As they stopped the timer, Trooper put on oven mitts and took out the cake. When it finished cooling down they layered the outside with white frosting. When they finished with that Marksman proposed they cut up some strawberries and put that on top of the cake to give it some more flavor. Trooper liked that idea and so they followed through.

The cake was now finished. They called out to the others to let them know that there was cake. The rest of the mercs came and took a slice leaving two for Marksman and Trooper. They both took a slice.

“Well. Now that we’re done and everyone has a slice of cake. Do you by any chance want to go bird watching with me for the rest of the day?” Marksman asked with a warm and embracing smile.

Trooper blushed seeing at the smile Marksman gave him and responded, “Sure. Sounds fun.”
