Work Text:
Toji has been living the single secret assassin dad life for a while now. Of course he didn't tell his son about his job and uses his gambling addiction as a lie on how he can pay the bills. Luckily, Megumi is still too young, the still unpresented child not seeing the holes in his endless lies. Toji feels guilty for lying to his boy like this but it was all for his own good. The omega doesn't want him to find out... yet. He knows that the boy is smart and will find out eventually but everything has it's time and place.
Perhaps he doesn't need to find out... not if Toji gets a different, well paying job. So he makes a promise to himself. After his son presents, he will go look for a job that doesn't threaten his or other's lives. Yeah... all when Megumi presents. And then his life will take a turn for the better!
Except... when Megumi does finally present at 12, the large omega doesn't really have time to think about it. His head is filled with something completely else, leaving no room for the worries of a new job. Because megumi presents as an alpha.
To be fair, he shouldn't be surprised. Although he expected him to be a beta, like his mother, Toji's side of the family is pretty well known for being one of the clans with the most talented and skilled alphas out there. The fact that the "blue eyed brat of the gojo clan", as they like to call him, was born an omega must have gotten to their heads. He absolutely despises them and their mysogonistic views.
Toji isn't mad at his son, god no. It wasn't his fault and being an alpha came with it's own perks. The thing he was concerned about is the fact that Megumi doesn't have and never had an alpha parental figure in his life. Not even a beta... so could Toji really still be enough for him? He can't teach him everything. It might feel better for the young boy if he had someone he could relate to and be influenced by.
During Megumi's first rut, Toji does his best to make his son feel comfortable. He builds him a nest, gives him pain killers and scented plushies to snuggle. He buys pup plushies that release purring and chirping noises to satiate his alpha instincts. He even cuddles with Megumi, releasing his calming, familial omega pheromones.
The boy's rut only lasts about five days, a short amount of time for a newly presented alpha's first rut. Toji thinks that's a good thing but takes his son to a check-up nonetheless. The doctor reassures him, telling him that Megumi is very healthy and that in case his natural scent changes too drastically or he acts weirdly, they should drop by again. Toji is relieved everything went so smoothly.
But then the doctor asks him about Megumi's alpha parent and his insecurities double down. He hesitantly states that Megumi had a beta mother but that she had tragically passed away shortly after his son's birth. The doctor seems a bit surprised, clearly having expected a different answer but offers his condolences nonetheless. After talking a bit about the future of his son and getting some encouraging words, they're off to go home again.
It's a quiet walk back, Toji deep in his thoughts and Megumi simply looking around. The kid was never an extrovert, quietly existing near his father most of the time. His son picks up on the slightly sour scent hanging in the air around them. Right, he was a fully presented alpha now. He would start to notice a lot more things than he did before. In a way, it was a blessing as well as a curse.
"...what's wrong?" Megumi asks, not really looking at his father. He knows the omega can hear him tho. Toji snaps out of his train of thoughts, his scent desperately trying to come across as sweet and friendly.
"Huh? No, nothing. Nothing at all. Just a bit tired." He laughs awkwardly to sell the lie, although it probably only makes it sound less convincing.
"No. You're not feeling alright. What's wrong?" The young alpha asks again, this time glancing up to meet his father's eyes. Stubborn brat, Toji thinks lightheartedly, chuckling to himself. Then again, his boy has always been rather perceptive, especially of the people around him.
"Don't worry 'bout it, kid." He gives a lazy smile, pulling his son's cheek lightly as a means to distract the younger from his worries. Megumi shouldn't worry about him... he's just a kid, after all. Either the distraction worked or Megumi grew tired of trying as he dropped the subject and they continued to walk in silence again.
That was until Toji picked up a faint, sour smell, emanating from his son this time. He didn't really know how to make him feel better... his son was probably still worried and his father not talking to him about it may have just reinforced those worries. The omega was about to speak up when his son beat him to it.
"Are- ... are you mad?" That nearly shattered Toji's heart right there. His son thought he was mad? Why?? Because he had presented as an alpha? Oh no... Toji knows how he can get on drunk nights, rambling and ranting about his bad alpha family. His son must think he hates alphas and therefor hates him, too!
"What? No, no! Of course not. Where'd this come from?" Toji's reply comes immediately as he stops in his tracks, looking at his son who had stopped walking after a few more steps as well. Megumi doesn't look at him, keeping his head hanging.
"Well... because you seem so sad lately. And- and i thought it's because i presented... as an alpha. Since you hate alphas..." Oh god, the poor kid sounds like he's about to cry. Toji's parental omega instincts kick in full force and he couldn't stop the sweet and calming pheromones from filling the air around even if he wanted to. He takes a step closer, but not yet close enough.
"Megumi, my blessing, i don't hate you. And i don't hate all alphas. I'm sorry i made you think that... 'twas a fuck up on my part." Toji reaches a hand out to pat his son on the head but when he hears the small alpha, he pauses before retracting it again.
"Then... then why? Why're you so... just so- so moody lately." Megumi manages out between sharp inhales and exhales. The little alpha is obviously trying really hard to keep it together. After all, he was never the type to cry in front of others often. Toji crouches down behind him, making himself smaller to seem less intimidating. Even though he was an omega, he couldn't deny that his body was rather large compared to other omegas or even some alphas.
"Megumi." His voice is soft, giving the impression of a calm aura. "It's- it's 'cause..." he takes a deep breath before continuing. The omega absolutely hated showing weakness... but perhaps he should learn to, so that he doesn't set a bad example for his son for the alpha to fall into some toxic masculinity hole. "I was worried we'd start growing distant. That you needed an alpha parent in your life... and that i won't be able to give you what you need anymore. You know i love you more than anything in this world. You're my light, my blessing."
Megumi snaps his head up and turns around, his tear filled eyes now finally looking at his father's somber expression. He pouts, trying to keep the tears from falling. Toji chuckles warmly, finally giving his son that pat which he'd been meaning to give him since they left the healthcare center. He messes the young alpha's hair up, making it look even more unruly than before. His son looks away, averting eye conact.
"Dad is such a dummy. I'd never think that..." He scoffs, the sourness of his scent fading. It warms Toji's heart to see his son admit to it. That he still needs him in his life, wether he's an omega or an alpha. "And you're a brat. Where'd you learn to be so disrespectful, huh?" The older omega smirks, flicking his son's forehead gently.
Megumi squints his eyes shut, his little hands coming to rub over the place he's been flicked at. "Ouch! It was you, stupid!" The small alpha exclaims, pouting in mock anger. Toji laughs. "Is that right?"
As they begin to walk again, Toji has noticed the change of vibe. It was much more comfortable, much more joyous now. They teased each other back and forth and he couldn't help but feel a bit stupid for worrying so much. Of course his son needed him the most, even now. What would a random alpha contribute? Megumi doesn't warm up to strangers quickly anyways. Yeah... things are just fine how they are now.
