Summary
Hamlet was everything that Horatio wasn’t. Horatio was everything that Hamlet wasn’t. That’s why they had gotten along so well when they were younger– they fit together like pieces in a puzzle, covering one another’s blind spots through life.
Then Hamlet met Ophelia, and Horatio was put on the sidelines. It didn’t bother him much at the time; he needed to focus on his studies at Wittenberg, anyway. He didn’t particularly care for the company of women in the first place. Still, he couldn’t deny that Hamlet had been on his mind no matter how much he wished to push the thoughts away. It wasn’t that the two had grown distant– no, they were still close friends, thick as thieves– they just had other things to prioritize. Not to mention that Hamlet was the prince of Denmark.
Horatio had never been as important to Denmark as Hamlet was.
Horatio had never been as important to Hamlet as Hamlet was to Horatio.
