Summary
In the end, it had been Gandalf’s decision to allow the second king of the Noldor, returned suddenly from death itself like a fire-eyed messenger of doom, to join their company. Aragorn had at first been in favor of sending him back to Rivendell for Elrond to deal with, but Gandalf had said that for him to be sent back to the land of the living at all was indication enough that he had a part to play in their quest, and Gandalf had had the final say.

“At first, because I thought you were your brother, or perhaps Turgon of Gondolin.” Ignoring Fëanor’s wordless little noise of sheer outrage, Legolas added, “And because — you showed respect and courtesy to Gimli from the start, where at first I did not. You were willing to help us, knowing nothing about our quest. And Mithrandir seemed to hold you in high esteem.” Feeling eyes suddenly boring into the center of his back, Gandalf turned to see the three of them regarding him with varying degrees of scrutiny.
