Chapter Text
A few months have passed since the night of the dance. As time moved along so did you. Spring Nationals came and passed. The team got their hearts broken, and just as Kita had predicted in the moment, you guys eventually healed from your loss and started looking forward to new possibilities in the future.
The past few months couldn't have gone better. Haru never bothered you anymore and you didn't feel this massive weight on you every time you were in his presence. True to his word, Haru really was working on improving himself, you never spoke to him but you could tell from a distance that he wasn't as bad as he used to be. You were even starting to get to a point where you could feel your hatred towards him fading.
Your dad was about to start a new job that he was genuinely excited for, a job that allowed him to have a life outside of work. The two of you now spent a lot of time together and now once a week you would call Goshiki and your aunt to have an online game night with them. It took time but your dad had really managed to fix things with both you and his sister.
You still called Goshiki and Shirabu on separate occasions than with your dad though because you loved gossiping about your life and keeping updated on everything happening in your hometown. Plus those two never failed to put a smile on your face.
Atsumu never stopped dragging you out of your comfort zone to do crazy things - you still couldn't ever say no to that boy no matter what it was he was trying to convince you to do. Suna continued to tease you every opportunity he got, keeping you constantly laughing. Osamu and you had spent countless hours binging movies and creating as many new recipes as you could - which only a small handful actually turned out.
And then there was Kita. Despite all this time you never ran out of things to talk about. You were still yet to find a story you didn't want to tell him or a story that he didn't want to hear. The same went for him, the more time you spent together the crazier his stories became. Turns out he was holding back so many stories that you found hilarious, even when he didn't quite understand why you were laughing so hard.
Kita had eventually graduated and the ceremony was beautiful. It had been a lovely spring morning when it happened and the whole team was there cheering him and Aran on. Even after he had finished his time at Inarizaki the two of you never lost that spark and connection between you.
When you had brought him home to properly meet your father as your boyfriend it went amazing. Your dad loved him and Kita really liked talking to your dad. It opened up the opportunity for many more days with the two of them as well as days with Kita and his grandmother.
As it was starting to get nicer you had opened up your backyard pool and just as you had insisted Kita's grandmother did come over and swim in it. She had a talent for it unlike any you had ever seen. The entire time she was out there her bright smile made you smile yourself.
You were happier than you had ever been. You couldn't believe that it was only a half a year ago that you had begged your dad not to bring you to Hyogo. Everything about this town had healed you. Only a few small interactions with a few idiots who loved volleyball and your life had changed forever.
"You ready y/n?"
You looked beside you at Suna who was in the drivers seat of his black car.
"Yeah." you replied with a smile and a nod as you turned your attention to the open road ahead of you.
"Y/n, turn up the music. It'll make the experience even better!" Atsumu called out form the seat behind Suna.
"And roll the windows down. That's an important part." Osamu added from the spot behind you.
You nodded. "Got it!" you said as you blasted the music a little louder than you probably should have. You also rolled down your window to feel the nice spring air against your face. It was about three in the morning but you didn't care. You would choose to be right where you were seated over being tucked into your warm bed every single time.
Suna wasted no time in hitting the gas bringing the car flying down the empty road at a speed that was not at all legal.
Atsumu wasn't lying when he said it was even better from the front seat. From where you were sitting right now it was a whole new experience. The wind in your face, the music blaring, the night air, the smell of gas, and nothing in front of you aside from the windshield that showed the area around whizzing past in a blur.
You started to laugh as your heart picked up and your hair flew in every direction. The music was so loud that you could feel it vibrating through you. But that only added to the high you were feeling.
"Holy shit we did it." Suna breathed out in shock as the car slowed down. He was out of breath clearly also feeling the same high that you were.
"We did it!?" Atsumu asked excitedly, shouting over the blasting music.
"We fucking did it! 138 that's a new record!" Suna exclaimed in disbelief.
There was some cheering from the two in the back and you couldn't help but grin. That was so insane and so stupid. But you didn't care.
"Can we do that again?" you asked.
Suna looked over at you with a grin before turning the car around and accelerating down the empty road once again.
You laughed as the rush returned. You were so happy and having the time of your life. Everything about this moment felt great. But unlike the last time you had done this, you didn't mind if the moment ended. You knew there were a thousand more moments just like it waiting in your future.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning you woke somewhat early, which was surprising since you had been out way later than you should have. It wasn't until close to five in the morning when you snuck back in the house.
As you got ready for the day you smiled when you heard your dad in the kitchen cooking. He had been happier these last few months than you had seen him in years.
"Hi dad." you said happily as you entered the kitchen where he was cooking.
"Hey sweetie, I made pancakes for breakfast. I'm going grocery shopping after I eat, wanna come?" he asked.
"Sorry, it'll have to be next time. I have plans to go over to Shinsuke's house after we eat. We are going to garden together." you said as you sat down at the kitchen table beside him to eat breakfast with him. You could still remember the first time you had referred to Kita as his first name, he smiled wider than you had ever seen him smile before.
Your dad smiled. "Your mom loved gardening." he said.
It still caught you a little off guard when he spoke about your mom. After years of avoiding even saying her name it was nice to finally hear him talk about her so openly. It was nice to not have to pretend she never existed.
"I like it a lot too dad. I think I got that from her." you replied with a smile.
"Well you certainly didn't get it from me. I kill everything I plant!" your dad said with a laugh. You giggled but also knew he wasn't lying, you could still remember the countless dead plants he had attempted to plant in your garden back in Miyagi.
Once you finished eating your final pancake you headed over to the door. "I'm heading out now, I'll see you later today." you called out as you put on your shoes.
"See you y/n!" your dad called back.
Before leaving you made sure to grab the plant Kita had given you months ago when he had picked you up for a school dance. You had been holding onto it until you could plant it together on a nice spring day. You wanted to plant it in the beautiful garden in his front yard where you could see it every time you went over or walked past. Like he has said, it was a beautiful reminder of what an amazing night you had with him. The night you danced in the rain without a care in the world.
When you made it over to Kita's house he was already hard at work gardening.
"Hey there." you said as you walked up his driveway.
Kita stopped what he was doing and looked over at you. He smiled as soon as he saw you. "Good morning y/n. I left your stuff on the porch." he said.
You moved onto the front porch where there were gardening gloves and a few tools already set out for you. You wasted no time in getting to work planting while he dealt with the weeds.
It was a beautiful spring day. The time of year where the weather was starting to leave the brutal cold of winter and head towards the bright warm days of summer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Kita had spent your day outside for hours now working on planting and tending to the beautiful garden outside his grandmothers house.
You had spent the entire morning talking and telling stories. Kita happily listened, telling the odd story himself. But now you both worked quietly beside one another, happy to just be in each others presence. Kita was one of those people that you never felt a need to fill up the silence.
You couldn't help but look over at him and watch as he meticulously completed the task he was working at with such care. You can't help but long for a life where this is your every weekend.
As you watched the boy working away there was something you noticed about him today. That smile that Atsumu had once told you was so rare to see had been on his face all day.
Something hit you as you sat there watching him work in the now fading sunlight. Something you had to say out loud because you couldn't stand the thought of waiting any longer to say it and it didn't scare you. Something you hoped didn't scare him either.
"Don't freak out Shinsuke." you said, immediately gaining his full undivided attention. "But I think I might - um I mean - well I care about you so much. And you make me so happy. So so happy. I feel like my real self around you."
As you continued speaking you tried to figure out what exactly you were trying to say. You quickly realized that you were the one freaking out instead of Kita. You remembered the night he had confessed to you how much of a mess he had been trying to figure out what your hand holding meant. You had to be the one who held it together for the two of you that night, but now you were the one freaking out not even able to get out a small phrase.
You didn't know how to say what you wanted to say so badly. But you had already successfully killed the moment so now all you had to do was just get it out for him to know and hope that it didn't freak him out.
"What I am trying to say is..." you didn't know why you were so nervous to say it. So nervous that you would freak him out or scare him.
"Y/n." Kita cut in as you let your voice trail off once again.
"Yeah?" you responded immediately, knowing you completely butchered your attempt at telling him what you were thinking. Telling him what you had already known for so long.
"I love you too." Kita said. He knew what you were trying to say. He knew and it didn't scare him.
You smiled at his words and he did too. Oh how you loved his smile.
